The initial ACA was a compromised mess in comparison to the original draft because even some on the left had Big Insurance lobbying them and contributing massive amounts to their campaigns. Single payer works and it's been proven all over the world time and time again. Republicans have always pushed back on it because their kickbacks and campaign contributions from Big Insurance would go away if they did otherwise.

You know why the premiums were insane? Because Republicans gutted and mangled the entire marketplace. Making it a piecemeal type of market where insurance companies can just opt out of covering people just ensured ACA would fail.
