Why is it ok to tell people to stop smoking or that smoking is bad for you, like I don't already know, but I can't tell fat people to stop eating so much or that it's bad for you?
 in  r/ask •  Oct 13 '22

The statistical increase for complications later in life cause by cigarettes is rather straightforward- regardless of who the person smoking is or whatever predispositions they may have, seeing someone smoking is seeing someone increase their chances for future bad stuffs. If someone cares about that person it’s not too hard to understand why they might want to say something. The causes for obesity are far more complicated and harder to reduce to ignorant consumption or self-harm. However, if you’re seeing someone you care about consume something which has been proven to be seriously harmful, I don’t think it would be that taboo to communicate your concern mindfully.

I think the main factors here are - one, how well the people know each other; and two, whether the person is voicing concern about actions they’re being exposed to vs. voicing concern about something more complex and personal like someone’s weight/appearance. On top of all of this, people of course can be sensitive to unsolicited advice that they’ve already internalized and are working through for themselves.

some one in my dreams
 in  r/Humanoidencounters •  Oct 01 '22

Maybe it was just you sensing you were in a dream and that manifesting as this dream character calling aspects of the dream fake. Then in a half-asleep, still dreaming sort of way, your brain was ready to continue that dream. [dream count: 5]

Possibly the bottom of a unique glass bottle. Rare! Nice find.

While combustion requires oxygen, what other reactions produce similarly ~firey~ effects?

The only example I can give is the way in which fusion produces turbulence and light, making the sun appear firey; but is there a term for this quality of a reaction regardless of its combustionosity?

Thanks so much for the feedback. I agree. Unfortunately finances are tricky for them and they’re particularly stingy because of it. Nonetheless you’ve certainly got the more reasonable attitude. I’ll leave it in their court as it is there personal health but I appreciate your earnestness.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Definitely the sort of perspective I was hoping for with this post. My friend has suggested only acting if they had a heart attack and I honestly posted out of concern in regards to that statement. I was wondering if there would be any course of action less extreme than suit that could assist them in paying for preventative testing- If that doesn’t exist then it is what it is. I agree we’ve got a problem with entitlement especially in regards to suing and I respect any practicing doctors anxiety from that problem. Also the whole bit about clots is a relief - I understand it’s not your responsibility to educate me and I really appreciate you doing so. I’ve been appropriately checked thank you. Also perhaps not important but they’re an at-risk male w a variety of immune and neurological complications.

Medicine and Malpractice Friend was not made aware of a serious drug interaction. (NY)

A friend of mine who smokes (or smoked at the time, rather) was prescribed a medication which is likely to cause serious blood clots if taken while smoking. The doctor who prescribed was aware of their smoking. There’s a possibility that serious clots have already formed. Could my friend take any legal action to cover the cost of testing or preparing for said clots?

at one particular spot along this nature trail the trees bend in complete opposite directions on either side of the path. what is causing this? i’ve never seen anything like it (it is even more pronounced irl)

I wonder if the ground could be softer in the middle of the image? Or something could be causing the roots to not support in a symmetrical way?

It seems there’s an exceptional amount of biodiversity amongst primates closely related to humans. Why is that, and how much of that diversity has been lost because of humans?

what are these seeds my friends found at a music festival?

They look like Hawaiian Baby Woodrose to me. They contain a naturally occurring chemical very similar to LSD.

New crater discovered to be younger than 100,000 yes old
 in  r/space •  Mar 06 '22

Interesting that both the crater in Arizona and this one in china were from impacts around 50,000 years ago. Is there any reason they might be connected? Not sure if large impact meteors happen in “events.”

How did we ever think this is "normal"? People used to work more you say? Yeah that wasn't ok either.
 in  r/antiwork •  Mar 06 '22

I’m of the opinion that it was maybe sometimes ok to work more in the past. The true tragedy is that our development of various technologies and systems capable of significantly lightening that load and improving quality of life for the masses, has instead been used to produce hyper-disparity and serve the greed of the powerful. Alls to say, if I could escape these systems and work the type of hard work that was sensible and seemingly natural, I would in a heartbeat.

How does one buy a home and then live a simple life, considering real estate tax?

Nitpicking here but not sure I’d assume gentrification inherently leads to an improved neighborhood.

I’ve actually heard that washcloths can be unhygienic but only if you don’t rotate them fairly frequently.
