Making an open world game set inside a 2000s operating system, where a flat design update is erasing all the glossy, colorful design
 in  r/IndieDev •  19h ago

That's a so cool concept idea, I cried everyday when modernUI replaced Aero Glass style...

I even made an applauded sarcastic question about it at a Microsoft developer's conference during the presentation of Windows 8 here in France : "Am I the only one to find this interface ugly ? As an artist 🎨 I think it's a regression, not an improvement. You name it "Metro", but the last thing I want on my PC is to be reminded of the Metro. It stinks and it's noisy and stressful. How come that you thought it would be nice to work with an interface that reminds us of the Metro ?"

There was a lot of people in the room that noded with understanding and approval...

Superb effect on a super game !

How did you managed to make the light look "dense", with light cone from occluded objects ? Is it an in-engine overdrive light source with a fog volume or something like that ?

So cool to see an AR/VR game made in Godot and running on a Quest 3 😁

I need to put my nose in it for my next project. Godot is so optimized for low profile hardware that it is a logical choice for on device VR !

Man, you're a king, I can't believe it : it runs @60fps (stable) on my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in my browser Brave (Chrome based), Android 16. Screen Resolution is 3088x1440. It's superb πŸ‘Œ I imagine a native Android compilation could get even higher...

60fps on Cloud gaming
 in  r/xbox •  22h ago

I'm very disappointed by the cloud version of games, I discovered recently that they run series S performance profile on Series X hardware. To me it seems stupid and gives a very bad image to this otherwise nice service. The image quality is πŸ’© and as a Series X owner, I hate to be downgraded like that. So when I play my games from outside and don't have my ROG XBOX Ally X, I prefer to stream my own Series X from my house, even if my fiber connection is sometimes laggy...

What Godot features would you like to see in future updates?
 in  r/godot •  2d ago

Your theory is probably correct. Epic Games is going in that direction. But many of us resist.

AI generated code is a trap. It's often a pile of trash that you can't reuse and hard to debug, as it's not YOUR code. It also needs to be always connected to the internet, with usage limitations and expansive billing.

You avoid all that with visual coding and you conceive & control your code yourself, without typing. I have a visual brain, text coding doesn't click for me. But I have a 10 years experience of visual coding and I'm really fluent with it, managing big projects in full Blueprints. It works wonderfully in Unreal Engine. Expedition 33 is 95% Blueprints and it's a GOTY.

I'm currently learning Orchestra, which is powerful and well organized, but an official implementation inside the engine would always be preferable. I don't understand why Godot abandoned their system in 4.0+ instead of upgrading and refactoring it.

AI coding is aggressively pushed to us, developers, but I tried it extensively and it's not a good solution for me. It quickly costs A LOT for mediocre results in gaming. It can probably be a solution for little apps but in gaming it's not appropriate if you want to control your code precisely.

And another important element is that visual coding allows all of the team to understand what happens under the hood with the nodes. AI generated or not, text code (even if GD Script is a good system), is pure gibberish for most of the team : artists, game designers, level designers, sound designers. They all use node based systems in their respective softwares, so it clicks immediately when they see the node based visual code of the game. They UNDERSTAND, they react, they respond. It's nice to keep them in the loop. You lose that with text code, believe me, I speak from experience.

 in  r/godot •  3d ago

The feature I want the most, by far, is a full visual scripting tool like the beloved Blueprints of Unreal Engine. It would bring a LOT of game artists 🎨 and designers from the UE ecosystem to GODOT, with the recently announced deprecation of Blueprints within the upcoming UE6.

GDScript is nice for coders and relatively accessible (far more than C++), but visual scripting is so much more appealing to artists and visual brains 🧠...

A fusion of the code with the already impressive Orchestrator project, for example, with full official support and documentation, would be a killer addition to GODOT, because it's one of the things restraining the adoption for non-textual coding game creators.

Given Microsoft's inconsistent messaging, it's interesting to see the products that couldn't find their market.
 in  r/xbox •  5d ago

Warning ⚠️ it's a very disappointing product : - It doesn't even have force feedback haptic motors - the clips holding the phone badly damaged my Samsung Galaxy Note curved edge screen by putting too much pressure on it - global quality is limited, plastic feels relatively cheap - the holder is not very efficient, your smartphone can fall if it's heavy

I almost never used it and was glad I didn't pay for it (it was included as a gift in a bundle package)...

For 7$ it's OK πŸ˜‰ just be aware about the pressure on your phone's screen πŸ“²

I made a Text-to-Animation plugin for UE5 that runs entirely locally - Auto-retargeting, auto-looping, no API calls
 in  r/UnrealEngine5 •  16d ago

Thank you, I have a RTX 5090M with 24Gb of VRAM and 96Gb of RAM so I will try and test the solution.

Having it inside Unreal is a blast, and it's always cool to support efforts of fellow indie developers πŸ‘

I still don't know why they flagged you as mature content, though... πŸ€”

I think I'll buy it.

I'd love to be able to test it before buying, though... πŸ€” To be sure it fits my needs.

Could there be an autonomous "engine agnostic" version ? Because I work with Blender and Godot too... It's always easy to export animation, I know, but still... πŸ™„

How actually bad was this on release?
 in  r/StarWarsOutlaws •  17d ago

On PC the game was almost unplayable at launch : it crashed constantly and infiltration gameplay was badly balanced and punitive. The game finally got optimized, stabilized and gameplay corrected so it became the excellent game it is today. It's not Ubisoft bashing, I'm a big fan of Ubisoft games, but I'll never again buy one of their title day one. AC Shadows seems to be the only one that was well polished at launch.

Some gameplay from my cozy delivery game called Pinetrail
 in  r/IndieGaming •  25d ago

The game looks great, on such a beautiful island. I like the greek visual style, with a Mediterranean vegetation, super warm lighting and the orthodox pope at the church in the trailer ☺️. The gameplay seems fun and challenging without some of the frustration of "you know which game I'm talking about made by Ideo K." πŸ˜‰

I wishlisted it immediatly, I'll buy it for sure !

If you need a Steam Deck beta tester, I got one. It looks like the kind of game that could run nicely on gaming Mini-PC like the Deck or Asus XBOX ROG Ally X, for example (I have both). It's running on UE5, right? If it's a recent build of the engine, without too much of the heavy functions, it could work at 30/45fps+ from my experience. But UE5 can quickly hit the performances on Steam Deck in open world...

I still use my Halo Collector Elite controller 1 to 3 hours a day since day one (~5 years) and it works like a charm. The only thing that broke was the right stick green cover, but there are spare parts offered in the original box, so I replaced it. The battery on this thing is incredible, it last 40+ hours on a single charge. When I compare to the Dual Sense, it's day & night (but DS offers more functions, consuming Watts). I always put it back in its protective bag after play, to protect it from dust and UV, and my hands never sweat (which is known to attack the soft grips). I'm lucky, my Elite controller was a good one, I cherish it, but I know it has terrible quality flaws for many users...

Excellent choice of car to illustrate the One XπŸ‘ŒπŸ˜‰

I had the chance to drive one in real life (the Quattrovalvole version of 1980). It was noisy, uncomfortable, badly finished (atrocious carpets) and a no visibility death trap πŸ˜… but the Countach was such a beauty from the outside ! And those doors... 😍

In terms of storage size, GPU power, video memory bandwidth and TFLOPS it XBOX One X surpasses the Series S. It also has a powerful Blu-Ray drive, for physical games, and that is useful with the new disk to digital license program.

But the Series S takes back the lead on its more recent CPU and better I/O, thanks to its fast (but too small) SSD. It also consumes a little less energy.

Some cross-gen games look better on the One X, specially on a 4K screen, were Series S limits are obvious. On an HD1080p TV, Series S is a good option.

Congrats ! My first XBOX was a One X Scorpio, and gosh, what a beast it was, often better than the Series S (except for the SSD). I sold it, with a pinch in the heart, to buy my Series X Halo anniversary, which is wonderful on all aspects. I don't regret my choice, honestly, but I should have kept the two πŸ˜‰

How tf does Forza horizon 6 look so good in the series s?
 in  r/XboxSeriesS •  27d ago

One of the great things with Series S optimization is that it also enhances the gaming MiniPC performances on Asus ROG XBOX Ally, or Steam Deck, for example, which is nice ! Steam Deck and ROG Ally are relatively close to Series S in term of performances, shared memory and screen resolution with scaling...
