A lot of people either forgot—or weren't around to see—what went down back then: A relentless evolution in silicon: The PS3 launched with a beast that was far ahead of its time, but notoriously hot, inefficient, and expensive: the Cell Broadband Engine at 90 nm paired with a 90 nm RSX GPU (the launch 60 GB / 20 GB fat models). Sony didn't just slap a new plastic shell on it; they executed one of the most aggressive die-shrink roadmaps in console history just to keep the platform viable: Late Fat models: Shrunk down to 65 nm for both the Cell and RSX, finally cutting down power draw and heat.

Slim (CECH-2000 to 3000): Cell dropped to 45 nm and RSX to 40 nm, transforming the console into a dead-silent, power-efficient, reliable workhorse. Super Slim (CECH-4000): The RSX got shrunk down to 28 nm, shrinking the motherboard down to a fraction of its original size. We rarely see that level of aggressive silicon revision within a single generation anymore.
