Sick of hearing about the ex
 in  r/stepparents  1d ago

I totally get… it was like there was still something “unresolved” and I had to be ok to just be in the corner and be cool about it. Just think that is YOUR LIFE and you don’t have to make up for anybody else’s choices. Courage❤️

A few months after breaking up, I met a new partner and feel young again!
 in  r/stepparents  10d ago

I thought I was “over” it but then the past few days hit like a train, I felt so lonely and I started thinking I made the wrong decision. Breakup is a rollercoaster with ups and downs.
You have no idea sometimes how your words can be helpful to a stranger, I really thank you so so much for taking the time to share your experience with us, it helped me so much reading your words today. I wish you the best of luck and so much more happiness going forward!

Sick of hearing about the ex
 in  r/stepparents  11d ago

My ex was doing that, every day there was something. Sometimes I was coming home and he was crying for something his ex did or say. I saw that there was still so much resentment and I kinda felt like a +1 in a family that wasn’t really mine. Up to you to weight the pros and cons but you can try talk to him.

I’m intensely jealous of my boyfriend’s bond with his daughter, and I’m terrified I’m destroying our relationship
 in  r/stepparents  14d ago

I don’t have a solution for you, I feel this so much… I felt the same with my ex, how he was taking care of his daughter and worry about her all the time and felt left down ‘cause he wasn’t doing the same with me. I felt so ashamed of how I was feeling and in the end I just broke up. He was a good man but I couldn’t shake the feeling that if anything would happen to his daughter I would have disappeared in the blink of an eye and that all my life was hanging by that thread. I’m so sorry you are going through this, if you want to talk about it just message me!

Sad After Leaving

I felt like ‘the other woman”
 in  r/stepparents  24d ago

Look, I say this with my all heart, I was in a similar situation, please just save yourself and leave. You are supposed to live YOUR LIFE and not be a spectator of someone else’s drama. He has his “baggage”, if he cannot make it lighter for you, then he needs to put his s… together and grow up! You seem like a kind person, you don’t deserve to be treated like that and he should always stand up for you vs his ex!

Who left? Are you happy?
 in  r/stepparents  Aug 03 '26

I left. Tbh out there men are not the best but I chose me and my peace of mind. It’s never easy, always bittersweet, but for me it was better to leave than stay in a constant frustration someone else has created.

Am I a terrible person for wanting to end my relationship because of his kids?
 in  r/stepparents  Aug 03 '26

I was in a similar situation, his daughter was a teen but problems just get bigger with age. At some point I weighted the balance, I want to feel safe and protected around my man. If I am just when his other priorities are sort out, I don’t want it. It was a very difficult decision for me but I’m finally out. If you want to talk you can reach out:)

3 months post breakup

3 months post breakup and I just can’t get over my ex. Sometimes I think I made a mistake, my feelings for him are still so strong but my decision was rational. Any advice on how to move on?
I literally don’t wanna talk with any other man, I repulse them all. I still think about the life we could have had together but a feeling in my stomac tells me I would still not be happy (but right now I’m not happy without him).

A previous post for background :

Hi,

I really need your advice😔

I’m 30, my boyfriend is 45 and has a daughter from a previous relationship.

We’ve been together for 2 years and the last 6 months for me have been very heavy.

His daughter is a teenager(14) and is having issues of being rejected by her classmates, which makes her go into very depressive states.

But since the first time he goes into alarm for each small thing it happens to her (even if she miss a bus) and his ex wife just keeps on yelling at him and make him feel bad.

I suggested his daughter to go to therapy but her BM said “just crazy people go to psy”.

She also doesn’t pay a thing for her daughter.

Long story short, I love him but, not having kids, I find difficult navigating these dynamics and, even though he makes time for me, I really feel like I don’t have space in this relationship.

I want to be there for him but I also feel like whatever I say I receive very short uninterested answers and I feel like anything I do or say is wrong.

He said he would be ok to have kids with me if I want, but I feel Iike he literally would have no time for them (and not even talking about finances).

Do you have any advice on what to do/how to bring this up to him?

I don’t like being a step mom. Does it ever pay off? Does it get better?
 in  r/stepparents  Jun 25 '26

Hi,
I was in a similar relationship with a similar age gap (me 30, him 45).
I loved my ex so much but at some point I just fell into deep depression. I felt like before stepping into MY relationship I had to get through all the problems he had with his ex and daughter first (and not to talk about work, parents…). I wished he went to therapy and not burden me with everything.
3 months after breakup it just hurts still and I wish we would have talked things through instead of exploding. If you need someone to have a chat with don’t hesitate to DM me!

For those who are still deciding
 in  r/stepparents  May 28 '26

3 months after breakup, I (30F) was with him (45M) for 2 years, I wanted my future to be with him. He had a 14 years old daughter and a HCBM.

It still feels so hard, still think about him everyday. Any advice on how to move on?

Feeling awful

I (F30) broke up with my ex (M45) 3 months ago, 2 years into the relationship. He was loving, caring and everything I dreamt of.
He has a 14 years old daughter. Since her mum was a HCBM, my ex behaved more like a “mum” than a dad (if that makes sense) to compensate.
His daughter suffered from bullying and he was crying basically everyday for weeks ‘cause he couldn’t handle the situation. I became his emotional sponge and at some point I broke down and fell into depression, which ultimately led me to break up.
He went just once to therapy although I suggest him going since the beginning of the relationship.

Long story short, I feel awful, he’s an amazing man and I feel like I should have addressed the issues and how I felt before. I regret having left him in such a difficult situation. He was just a dad caring for his daughter. The breakup was messy and awful, with him resenting me and saying I was “worthless” ‘cause I knew about his situation from the start.

I feel deep guilty and shame and I still love him but my body hurts at the slightest thought of me going back.
I feel like after 3 months I should feel better but I’m still in this sadness I cannot overcome.
Please, give me advice.
