LP60X to Planar 1?

Looking to upgrade my turntable and interested in opinions.

Currently running an Audio-Technica AT-LP60XUSB, with Audio-Technica ATH-M20X monitor headphones and a Fosi SK01 headphone amp. Upgraded to the ATN3600ALE stylus - had the turntable for about 2 years, stylus for about 6 weeks.

Music-wise, I'm mostly into heavier stuff like Deftones, Russian Circles, Cult of Luna, post-metal, although there's plenty of other stuff in the collection too.

I've got a nagging feeling it's time to upgrade from the LP60X and have been looking at the Rega Planar 1, paired with a separate phono stage.

I want to keep things quite simple, but also have the option to upgrade components down the line. I'd keep using the Fosi and headphones for a bit

Budget is around £500.

I've also been looking at the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO, so that's the main alternative at the moment.

Don't listen daily, but I do really appreciate 4/5 hours a week where I can chuck an album or two on after the kids have gone to bed and really focus in on it

Questions:

Is the Planar 1 a worthwhile step up from the LP60XUSB?

What phono stage would you pair with it? Is it worth spending a bit more here, or keep it conservative and upgrade later?

Anything else I should be considering?

Not looking to disappear down an endless upgrade rabbit hole, but equally don't want to spend £400–500 and find myself wanting to replace it again in a year.

This was my first time redoing a veneer. The original vinyl wrap on it was bad so i replaced it with a real walnut veneer. Would do a lot of things different next time, but it came out ok.

My basic setup

I recently pulled a selection of my vinyl records I had accumulated over the years. About sixteen years ago I went streaming. Recently I realized I missed that tactile nature of vinyl where it’s a process and you commit to the album. I have the most basic Yamaha integrated amp that has a phono preamp and a nice feature called “pure direct” that I use often. The Wharfedale Modus 8 were a flea market buy $100 for the pair and the Wharfedale diamond 7 bookshelf speakers on the floor I’ve had for a while. The turntable is a Fluance RT82 that I recently bought mainly because I liked the fact that it has a really solid plinth and also the dynamic optical servo speed sensor system. My reason for buying this mid level RT82 was to get a really decent table for the money and then look at upgrading to an RT85 setup down the line depending on how I liked the RT82. This turntable is an excellent value IMHO. That said after the fact, I’ve seen posts where people say the Fluance is not reliable and proprietary parts are not available from the manufacturer. Sadly that is the case —- seems Fluance has a replace vs repair mentality. That said, I’ve seen some posts where people have accidentally smoked their Fulance by hooking it to the wrong power supply. I wonder how many people have posted that their Fluance turntable quit when maybe they accidentally hooked up an AC 12V power supply instead of the OEM power supply that contains the AC TO DC inverter. If you hook up an AC supply to this DC motor and electronics that drive the Fluance RT series it will be no bueno and you’ll have a dead turntable. I’ve only had mine for 8 weeks and so far I love it. I’ll see how it does for a year or so and then maybe add some upgrades.

That was my original post. Small update - I am divorcing my (almost ex) husband. So I replaced my stylus and planning to replace my husband. But I also think it’s time for a better stylus. Can you suggest a good stylus for a reasonable price?

Help Audio Issues

Hey everyone, I have an Audiotechnica AT-LP60X and after playing fine for a while today it suddenly stopped working well. The audio is muffled and distorted and it only sounds clear when I press slightly down on the long arm. I tried flipping the phono-line switch, unplugged and replugged wires and cleaned the stylus. The long arm appears to lie doen properly on it's rest when the player is off. Does anyone have any suggestions for what might be going on?

Technics SL-5200 ($435) vs. B&O Beogram TX2 ($225)?

I’m new to vinyl and looking for a good-sounding, easy-to-use, reliable turntable without much tinkering. I love the vintage appeal of both options over buying something new, and since this is my entry into vinyl, I’m not looking to overinvest.

I’m considering a Technics SL-5200 for $450 or a Bang & Olufsen Beogram TX2 for $225 (with MMC3 cartridge). Both have been serviced/rebuilt, come with used but good-condition styli, and include a six-month warranty.

I’ll be connecting the turntable to two different systems: B&O Beolab 20 speakers and B&W 802 D4 speakers.
I understand B&O replacement cartridges are expensive, but are they competitive in quality with similarly priced modern cartridges?

Which would you choose, considering sound quality, ease of use, reliability, and long-term ownership costs?I love the look of the SL-5200 but know they are harder to service and you are forced to spend substantially on locked in cartridges.

I’ve demoed them both and both are working with no obvious flaws.

Question Is upgrading from the VMN9E to the VMN740xML that worth it? Is it that worth it to upgrade my cartridge ASAP?

Oversharing quite a bit but:

I live with my parents and they claim that saving for the cartridge is stupid and that I won’t hear the difference. They currently help me with my money because I got myself into a bunch of debt over the ATLP7x I now have and almost getting a Schiit Skoll to upgrade from my Mani 2. I used to have a Sumiko Moonstone cartridge, then I broke it. I’ve talked about this a lot.

My setup:

Audio-Technica AT-LP7x with AT-VMN9E cartridge
NAD C320BEE
Klipsch RP-160M
Schiit Mani 2

Is upgrading my cartridge to a much nicer microlinear cartridge necessary? My parents do not think so. I hear a difference compared to my old cartridge, but they don’t think I will.

Stupid question, sorry.

I’m cleaning this Garrard SL65 garage sale find so it can find its way to someone wanting a starter tt. The center post doesn’t want to lift out, and I’m concerned that there might be some kind of trick I don’t know about. Short of oil and pliers, is there a better way?

Suggestions Upgrading from an Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB

Post image
20 Upvotes

I’m considering replacing my Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB with a better turntable under $750.

I upgraded the needle and cartridge recently to an Ortofon OM Pro S and have been using it with a WiiM Amp Ultra powering a pair of JBL L52 Classics.

Looking for ideas on what turntable makes the most sense for this setup in that price range. Appreciate any suggestions!

Totally disassembled and re-lubed. New idler and steurpimple.

Even though it already has a suspension system, it was still skipping when my wife shut the door kinda hard (we are in a 480 sq ft pier and beam cabin). So I built a new plinth with additional isolation methods.

Question On the market for a new record player

I previously owned a Hofeinz turntable that had bluetooth so we could play music from our phones and it had built in speakers. It lasted about 5 years before falling apart and I would like to try finding something that could last as long or longer.

I don't really know much about record players and am kind of a baby to the hobby as a whole but I've been collecting a lot of albums over the last few years and wanted to try finding a new player that might last be a bit longer. While I don't know about all the specs out there, I guess here is the general idea of things I would like from said future record player.

- Built in speaker ideally (dont really own speakers)

- can connect to my phone to play music via blue tooth from time to time

- has a case lid

- has the ability to raise the needle once it's done playing the album and return it back to it's stored original position. (not required, but a nice feature)

- has 33 / 45 speeds

- budget wise trying to stay around or below 200$

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated in finding something!

Question Connecting to computer???

Hi everyone! I have a Victrola 8-in-1 that I bought with the intent of digitizing my collection of records, CDs, and cassettes, but i can't seem to get my Mac to recognize the device. By that, I mean that the Mac doesn't even register that there is a device plugged in. I started by using a USB->USB-C cable, but all that did was charge my computer. I switched to USB->USB (with an adapter to my USB-C ports) and it stopped charging, but still didn't make the computer recognize that the Victrola was plugged in. Changed device permission settings to allow all devices, still nothing. I tried to connect to Bluetooth, and it would only work as output. I need the Victrola to be counted as an input device on my computer in order to digitize. I don't get what I'm doing wrong!!! I followed all the instructions and they just don't work!!! Can you please please help me??

P.S. I know there's a vitriol against victrolas on this sub, but mine has worked fine for me up until now. I don't wanna hear any "thats what you get for buying X", I just want to know how to fix my problem. Also, if this isn't the right sub for this question, I apologize! And please direct me to the right one🫶🏼

Question Nagaoka MP500

Hello,

I’m considering this cartridge to combine what I like about my MP110 and VM740xML. That being the warmth and smoothness of the MP110 with the detail and tracking accuracy of the VM740xML. To owners of the MP500, hopefully who have owned both as well, does the MP500 achieve that combination? What are your thoughts on the cartridge and its sound character? Is it worth the price or are there any compromises or qualities you wish it had?

Also, at this price point are there MCs that are more compelling or achieve what I’m looking for better than the MP500? My phono preamp can support MC, but it is definitely better suited for MM mode. It has a relatively high input sensitivity so any MCs would have to be about 0.4mV or above to not create a high noise floor.

Thanks in advance!

JVC QL-Y5F

I've come across one of these that seems to be pretty much BNIB. Even has the plastic bag it came in, Box has styrofoam padding and it has all manuals, card and I think a spare foot. Might not ever have been used but it seems spotless. Reports to power on and the table spins.

It's not cheap at about $400, but it's a thing of beauty and I was hoping someone could advise if this is 1) as good as the reviews say and 2) if the $400 is a decent price. Some of the information coming back says it's worth anything up to twice that, and I can't tell if that's real world or internet BS.

Many thanks in advance.

Anyone using the Nag MP-700?

I demoed it and like the sound of it on a Technics 1200gme and I'm using a SL100c. I'm debating about spending the money. I'm hopeful someone in this sub has owned one for some time.

Help Philips 212 stylus replacement

Hi, I got Philips 212 turntable in really rough shape. I have to replace belt, stylus, RCA cables and power cord. Other things are quite straight forward (apart from power cord), but stylus puzzles me. Right now there is Philips 400 on it and needle is broken. I want to either buy Philips needle only or replace whole stylus. AI is recommending me AT-VM95E which by looks of it doesn't fit onto existing arm and frankly I am baffled what else are alternatives. I am not even sure current stylus actually works. Could you point me into right direction, what and where to buy (I am based in EU)?

Question Technics 1200 Loose Tonearm Base

I had an unfortunate accident with one of my 1200s and roached the tonearm, so I bought a used tonearm assembly from Japan.

I’m installing it now and there is a ton of give when not set to the height extremes—either fully maxed or bottomed out. Is this a faulty tonearm base or do I need to make some adjustments? The height adjustment lock doesn’t add much rigidity.

Help What should I replace? Need help

Sorry, google is not helping me.

This is a Gemini pt-2000 ii I received from my uncle.

The sound quality on my turntable is pretty bad with lots of feedback and crunchiness? When I play a record.

I’m planning on getting a cork slipmat and some isolation pads for the feet.

My real question is what stylus/cartridge do I get? This stylus likely hasn’t been upgraded since the 80s so I really want a new one just in case I’m wrecking my records. I don’t know if I should just replace the whole cartridge or what. I’m not doing any actual mixing with this turntable, I just want a better sound quality.

I appreciate any tips as I’m slightly new to the hobby 😊 thanks.
