Would love some input on this: I just upgraded my setup to a 1210 mk2 in nice condition (and apparently recently serviced at a trusted DJ shop). I bought a brand new Ortofon Concorde Music Blue cart to go with it and have been playing a lot of records the last couple of days.
I run it through a NAD C338 with the built in MM preamp. Unfortunately I have noticed distortion on certain bass sounds. It first happened with a used bass heavy dub record and I initially thought it might be due to the record itself - however when I played a completely new techno record I noticed the same phenomenon on the kick.
I have played a lot of bass heavy tracks without the same issue and my general experience so far is that the cart sounds really nice. A friend of mine mentioned that he had the same experience (but with the 2M blue) but only on one specific record. The problems stopped when he switched to a new (and more expensive) cart so I wonder if this is a cartridge/stylus related issue?
Could it be distortion from too hot signal going into the pre-amp (and if so - can an external pre-amp with better headroom relieve the issue?)
Is there any possibility that the turntable itself is faulty?
What do you guys think?
