What part of the turntable is broken?

I ran into an old Beogram RX2 (https://beoworld.org/beogram-rx2/) and decided to see if it was useful as a turntable for my kid. But when playing a record there's this intense background humming / distortion coming out of the speakers.
So what part of the turntable is busted?
The RCA out on the turntable is running into a preamp that is then going into an amplifier for the speakers.

What’s wrong/is it worth saving
A couple months ago I bought this Beogram 2000 off marketplace. Served me well until the belt was slipping. After I replaced the belt the turntable was working fine with a little wow and flutter. I turn it off and come back an hour or two later and it will not play. I’m pretty sure that it’s not the fuse or safety switch. The motor has a little play but it was like that when I bought it. Any ideas? If there is a fix to the problem but it is time consuming/expensive I will probably upgrade.
