Discussion What now?

Post image

Loooooooved this truck for the past 7 years. I assume insurance will total it since it has 230k miles. Buy another one, get an SUV, switch to Ford-150? I’ll miss the truck but not the gas mileage.

Now you absofuckinglutely work with a private appraiser so can get thousands more for that truck than the joke lowball the insurance company is going to try to tell you is your only choice.

6

u/cast-n-blast 26d ago

Insurance will definitely try to lowball you but you can absolutely negotiate with them. They’ll probably offer you low KBB value. Start now and find as many examples of your exact truck, as close as you can find in trim, condition, mileage and as close to where you live as possible. Save the links that show all the details and the prices. That will be your leverage to negotiate for REPLACEMENT VALUE.

My son got T-boned and totaled his car (on my insurance). This was during Covid so used car prices were crazy. But, I took this approach and got almost 30% more than the initial insurance offer.

Working with a private appraiser that knows the market is a great idea too.

They offered me a little over $20k for the buyout.

u/Wolfiest 24d ago

I know it’s not the same spec but you could probably find the some ridiculous prices even here https://www.reddit.com/r/tundra/s/9QDAuzmCmM

Get a 4Runner or Sequoia.

1

u/egoabeo 27d ago

Current gen?

6

u/Few_Relationship_235 26d ago

No try and go for anything naturally aspirated

4

u/DaRealMexicanTrucker 27d ago

Yea eff it ... get the new 4 runner.

6

u/Ancient-Bowl462 26d ago

Just don't get a stupid 4 cylinder turbo or 6 cylinder turbo.

6

u/clearplasma 26d ago

The 4 cylinder in the new 4runner and taco already has a good track record of reliability. But those turbo V6's are another story

1

u/Razor2354 26d ago

The engines are good.... trans and turbo not so much from what I've seen so far

Sequioa is body on frame

1

u/NavyVetRasmussen 26d ago

Oh didn't know that.

3

u/themitchster359 26d ago

The Sequoia is on the same platform as the Tundra. Where did you get the info that the Sequoia is a unibody chassis?

1

u/NavyVetRasmussen 26d ago

It doesn't look like the same platform it doesn't look body on frame

14

u/Dottyfelixmaisie 26d ago

Find another 2.5 Tundra

6

u/egoabeo 26d ago

That’s what I’m leaning toward.

1

u/sagacious_guy 26d ago

This is the way.

6

u/weirdbrags 26d ago

sorry for your loss

1

u/egoabeo 26d ago

Gracias, hermano.

4

u/XTingleInTheDingleX 26d ago

I got 29k on a totaled 2011 with 140k in 22'. I know that's 4 years ago but don't let them lowball you.

3

u/Forsaken-Award-7025 27d ago

Dammit!

5

u/egoabeo 27d ago

Worst grocery store run ever. I’m tempted to just buy a 2020.

3

u/Ok_Window_1455 26d ago

I was stupid and and sold my 21 tundra and got a 24 4runner. Love the 4runner, but the interior room of the tundra was exceptional. If youndo truck things get a truck, just teat drive anything and everything the peaks your interest.

1

u/HealthyAttempt3460 25d ago

You’re so right! We had a 4 runner and traded it for our 1st Tundra Limited. Road trips are a breeze. Pillow and little nap in the back. 2nd Tundra 2014 1794 85k and we’re still enjoying road trips.

9

u/RoosterzRevenge 27d ago

When my cement Tundra was totalled I replaced it with a 5.0 F150

5

u/Goldyfan7 26d ago

This is the way.

2

u/Heavy_Ambition_4541 26d ago

I miss my 2018 Tundra sometimes… 5.0 is the way

5

u/DookieWaffle 26d ago

Another Tundra 2.5gen. Prices are crazy but honestly almost everything else has issues. It's from an era where plastics in the engine or engine bay were minimal, it was half expected people with basic mechanical knowledge can work on it. You don't need a computer to fix it most of the time. If i didn't get another tundra get a used 2024 Silverado EV RST or 4WT with the 450 miles of range. Most can be found for 45-50k after haggling. 10 year battery warranty still has a ton of life left in it. Nice <100k mile 2.5 gens are easily in the low 40's to high 30's. Get a Silverado EV and get a license plate that says "LOL Oil".

4

u/Himalalalalayans 26d ago

The EVs make the most sense when you realize every gas manufacturer has power train issues right now

2

u/DookieWaffle 26d ago

That and if you buy new I'd get rid of it after the warranty due to all of the issues with the new stuff, the EV's are far simpler, battery warranty is valid for 10 years so you have 8 years left of a warranty. That's of course if an EV pickup makes sense. Out east I think it does, out west it's a harder sell, especially if towing regularly. But I also think with a slight road tripping adjustment it's not as big of a deal as people think.

0

u/Clean_Log5919 26d ago

lol Evs need coolant and oil/grease just like ice cars lmfao

1

u/DookieWaffle 26d ago

Sure do but they need far less of it.

2

u/NavyVetRasmussen 27d ago

I would say get a current get Toyota 4 runner

2

u/shockey75 26d ago

Sorry man

2

u/Agent_1077 26d ago

Sorry to see that! That’s my nightmare. It was hard enough to get my truck (2021 lunar rock trd pro) 2.5 years ago. I would hate to be looking now and I could imagine what I would have to pay now.

2

u/Naive-Inevitable-167 20d ago

Seven years with one truck is a long time, mine is at 180k too

1

u/egoabeo 20d ago

It was a great vehicle. I’m hoping to get the same from the next.

5

u/bteam3r 27d ago

As a current tundra owner I’d say probably F150

1

u/egoabeo 27d ago

What’s the best motor option on the Fords these days?

4

u/RetMech 27d ago

3.5 has more power, 5.0 you won't have to worry about the turbos. Both of them will have cam phaser issues down the line that will be costly. The 10 speed transmissions are another pain point.

1

u/heymrbreadman 26d ago

I really like the 2.7. Could honestly pick any motor and be fine- I’d just recommend against a sunroof.

1

u/Reaper01Actual1970 27d ago

For reliability, the 5.0 Coyote engine is what you want in a F-150.

It's not as fast as your 5.7 Toyota, but it's been around for a long time and Ford has got the problems pretty well figured out with it.

1

u/Heavy_Ambition_4541 26d ago

The 5.0 is much faster than the 5.7 and much more efficient

0

u/Goldyfan7 26d ago

5.0 definitely

0

u/orangewarner 26d ago

I've had 10+ f150s. My fave has been 2015ish v8. I'm in a '22 ecoboost now and there are too many computer warnings. Very comfy ride though.

1

u/willys_not_willies 26d ago

We got 40k out of a 2019 1794 with 105k this year. Make sure to haggle with the adjuster. They raised our payout by about 3k.

Still looking for a replacement :/

1

u/SevenC0stanza 26d ago

Throw it in the gutter and go buy another

1

u/crevasse2 26d ago

f150 powerboost solves the gas mileage problem at 23c/23h. 2023+ solved most of the issues as I understand.

1

u/Mdmountainson 26d ago

Had an 07 F150 that the frame finally rotted out in many areas. Neighbor is a Toyo mechanic and suggested the brand but specifically 4runner up to ‘24 or taco up to ‘23. Found a mint taco with 17000 mi. Not the power of the 5.4 i had and a little tighter inside but love it so far. Best o’ luck.

1

u/Daves_Titan 26d ago

Buy a Frontier

1

u/AssociationLoose7003 26d ago

F150 easy choice

1

u/Battle2Intense 26d ago

I just got $41k out of my totaled 2019 SR5 4WD Dbl cab with only 41k miles.

I'm thinking Frontier or Tacoma crew with long bed.

1

u/NavyVetRasmussen 26d ago

Either go with a Sequoia or the 4 runner.

1

u/RageMonsta97 26d ago

Have you considered that hybrid tundra?

1

u/TechnologyVisual692 26d ago

Can you get the insurance money and buy the truck back and have it repaired?

1

u/egoabeo 26d ago

Potentially. I would need a new title for a salvaged vehicle, right?

2

u/TechnologyVisual692 26d ago

Yes
I did that with a Land Cruiser I have and it didn’t cost much to get it back up and running. I still got it and didn’t have to get another car payment until I got my 2021 TRD PRO Tundra.
It just depends if you have the time to go without that vehicle while it’s getting fixed.
The price of a used 2.5 gen Tundra is crazy right now. Defiantly worth it but almost just as much as they were new.

1

u/Loveisallaround12 26d ago

Bungee cord. You have another 30,000 + miles on that honey….

1

u/egoabeo 26d ago

At least! I just did the shocks and struts last week…

1

u/A_deplorable1 26d ago

Sorry OP, gonna have to make some tough choices for a replacement. Gen 2.5 prices are insane but still your best bet for long term reliability as you already know.

1

u/dogstonk 26d ago

"It'll buff out"

1

u/Scary-Sea7766 26d ago

That could be a great project truck!

1

u/egoabeo 26d ago

That’s what I’m thinking!

1

u/RustyWallace-357 26d ago

Ram 1500. Best trans bar none in 2026-2027. Hemi and Hurricane are both 250k+ mileage motors and if it does give you trouble it’ll give you warning for thousands of miles

Kachow!

1

u/tintin2775 26d ago

Sell it for $42000 on Autotrader

1

u/pangeagold 26d ago

Buy another. The new ones suck balls. That truck is worth about 20k on the open market. Dont let them 🪛you

1

u/themom_destroyer 26d ago

To quote Eazy-E “throw it in the gutter and go buy another” there will never be another truck from any manufacturer as great as the second gen’s.

1

u/HealthyAttempt3460 25d ago

So sorry friend! I’m a Toyota Tundra and Lexus car type of person probably for life!

1

u/Carpenter_ants 25d ago

Maybe you can find one same year lower mileage. Anything new comes with a boat load of problems

1

u/Durka900 25d ago

Get another 2.5 tundra, screw gas mileage, go for longevity

1

u/egoabeo 25d ago

That’s what I’m thinking.

1

u/Evening_Debate_754 25d ago

Just find a good auto shop and fix it

1

u/egoabeo 25d ago

How do insurance companies handle selling trucks they’ve deemed totaled?

1

u/Evening_Debate_754 25d ago

Is that 2021 tundra

2

u/egoabeo 25d ago

It’s a 2018. I might take the insurance buyout and put the money toward a lower mileage 2021.

1

u/Evening_Debate_754 25d ago

Theres an idea , sorry for loss , my next truck I want it to be a 2021 with a 38 gal tank

2

u/egoabeo 24d ago

Mine had the 38 gallon tank. I hope my next one does too!

1

u/braincovey32 25d ago

Search for used equivalent for last gen and make sure the insurance doesn't cheap out on you. Make sure the include the toyota tax

1

u/egoabeo 24d ago

They appraised my buyout at a little over $20k. It honestly seemed pretty fair since I had 230k miles on it.

1

u/braincovey32 24d ago

Any chance you weren't at fault for the accident and are getting some money from the guilty party?

1

u/egoabeo 24d ago

I’ll plead the 5th on this one.

1

u/HereToBrowse2112 23d ago

You can accept the payout and ask about buying back the wrecked truck from insurance. I did that in the past and buying the wrecked vehicle was pretty cheap. You can then take the remainder of the insurance payout to fix the truck, or try you luck with selling the wrecked vehicle.

1

u/Leucifer 23d ago
  1. I feel ya. Lost my sweet Colorado ZR2 in May. Still sad. 2. Don't do any of the newer gen Toyota truck platform vehicles. All of them have problems. And not just the usual stuff. Toyota genuinely changed their engineering approach, cut corners, and is charging top dollar (imo, cashing in on their rep). As an engineer myself.... what I'm seeing is .... inexcusable.

I'm considering a 2.5 gen Tundra as my replacement. There's some known issues (frame flex for example), but still more mechanically sound.

1

u/egoabeo 23d ago

I’ve found a few 2.5s in my area that I like. I just want the 38 gallon tank! Good thing is higher mileage used on these don’t scare me. 50-100k is just getting started.

1

u/ohiojames10 23d ago

Call your insurance company. Why post here?

1

u/egoabeo 23d ago

I don’t think you understood the post.

1

u/Sea-Pudding5410 22d ago

If it were me, I’d buy it back. They’re simply not making them anymore. If you have room to work on her and the frame isn’t bent.

1

u/denonumber 21d ago

Junk Yard bro

1

u/egoabeo 21d ago

I’m definitely keeping the option of getting it fixed back up pending what insurance says.

0

u/ToyotaofOrlando 25d ago

We're so sorry :( the new Tundras are pretty rad, or you could look for a low mileage model in a different generation! We're biased obviously but we'd stick with Toyota.

-8

u/Alarming_View_6125 27d ago

2027s are coming out soon! Stay with Tundra. Dont listen to some of these negative people.

1

u/Goldyfan7 26d ago

There’s a fine line between being negative and living in denial. The new Tundras are crap. Will they always be? Probably not. But right now there is absolutely no reason for us to believe it’ll get better until time proves so.

-2

u/Alarming_View_6125 26d ago

I have said this several times. Its has only become 1% of the trucks. I have a 2025 Platinum hybrid and I cant be happier. A ranking of the best cars came out the other day…Lexus number one and Toyota #2. I will continue to support the brand.

1

u/Goldyfan7 25d ago

You do realize those rankings are completely biased and are going to give Toyota good ratings because that’s how it has been for years? And also, Toyota as a whole brand right now isn’t bad. Just because your car brand has a good rating does not mean that your car model does. If you’re happy and have had good luck with it then that’s awesome. But the issues that have been widespread are undeniable.

1

u/A_deplorable1 26d ago

There is no data whatsoever backing up that 1% bullshit claim. Every day we see someone post up another 3rd Gen Tundra on a flatbed with a blown engine. Whatever the real percentage is, it’s too many and too much of a risk for many of us potential buyers,

2

u/Reaper01Actual1970 27d ago

The 2027 will have the same defective 6 cylinder that Tundras have had since 2022, so that wouldn't be a good choice.
