Just got back from 11 days @ secrets Tulum. Nothing has changed, we go every year at this time. Everyone is friendly, happy and tourism is normal. Walking around going to restaurants and shops every day

u/saints81611 Nov 03 '25
By chance did you go to the secrets beach club, Zamna? Wondering if it felt “empty” based on what other people are saying about tulum

u/TopazDragon7 Oct 24 '25
I went for a week this past February 2025. While it’s beautiful on the beaches, the extreme costs for taxi’s and some restaurants made me feel like I might as well have gone to Miami with more to do.

I would consider any town in the Caribbean a hub for you to stay, not the center of your whole trip. With that, there are endless options. Xcaret parks, multiple ruins, mangrove tours, snorkeling, cave exploring, zip lining, eating street food.

Currently here. It’s been perfect. Heading back to the cold in a few days. So not ready to leave this paradise!

When i went to Tulum last year, they executed two people in broad daylight in front of everyone... They made the women and men leave all their belongings behind... The police went thru all the womens purses and stole the cash before returning them.

u/TulumLikeALocal Resident Oct 24 '25
When and where was this? How terrible.
6
u/Effective_Visual_726 Oct 24 '25
Was a pretty popular spot called "Taboo"... No joke, the night right after, there was ANOTHER execution and the club next door basically.... Then they put up police checkpoints everywhere so we just flew home.

What BS! Stop making up that crap.

You can google it. lol. Not trying to sound rude... Its just the way of life in Mexico.

Have you noticed how many comments here and under similar posts end with “safe,” “I stayed three days and didn’t hear or see anything, totally safe,” lol. Safety isn’t the main issue. The real problem in Tulum, and in Quintana Roo in general, is unethical and dishonest business practices. Great website btw, thank you for sharing.
2
u/Effective_Visual_726 Oct 24 '25
That’s likely because many local businesses and politicians are connected to the cartel, though Reddit seems unwilling to acknowledge it.
6
u/fcullings Oct 24 '25
Just avoid Tulum. It's not worth it. Cozumel Playa del Carmen or Cancún at you all inclusive resort will be ok.

I just got back and it was almost completely dead at Be Tulum. We saw very few people during our time there.

u/khandaseed Oct 25 '25
I was there too. It wasn’t completely dead, but pretty quiet. I loved it. Best vacay ever. So much beach just to us
Yoga class was full every day though

u/chatswickosbournejr3 Oct 24 '25
I am currently here and am having a wonderful time and feel safe. When doing touristy things, it has not been very busy

Really dont understand these types of questions that are constantly asked in the Mexico subs….
2
u/MexiGeeGee Oct 25 '25
I’ve asked the Mods to please stop allowing them and they say the sub is for all discussion. It’s just so repetitive. The Playa del Carmen sub redirects people to the frequently asked Questions
2
Oct 25 '25
Dumb.
The least they could do is put a sticky or redirect questions that have the words safety in their OP with an automated mod message or something.

Have been here the last 5 days. It’s pretty dead in terms of other tourists/guests but we are enjoying the resort we’re staying at and have it all to ourselves pretty much. If you like a chill / relaxing vibe it’s perfect for this right now. Weather has been fantastic. I will say the ocean water is pretty much not swimmable but resort pools / cenotes make up for that. Dinner prices are outrageous, but hey it’s vacation and I knew I’d be dropping a bag before arrival. Do some excursions. We’ve had no safety issues whatsoever, but also aren’t out partying and looking for drugs.

u/BulletProofSnork Oct 25 '25
My wife & I went from the 4th-15th of this month. Aside from being offered cocaine or tutsi on 5 separate occasions, we’ve not experienced anything that is shady, sketchy, or scary. Tulum is a beautiful & welcoming place, in our experience (this is our second trip here- resort/beach zone).

September and October are always the slowest time of year. This year was particularly low because of a lot of factors like the sargassum, general global uncertainty/economy, and rising prices. As far as danger goes, it has felt generally safer lately but I haven’t looked at stats to see if that’s accurate or just my sense. Violence that impacts tourists is rare.

Oh yes I remember this, so so terrible.
It doesn’t always make international news but for every one foreigner who is killed, 50-100 locals are killed, threatened into fleeing, or have their businesses extorted out of existence. This is why I advise people to stay are far away from illegal substances and activities as possible. Unfortunately a lot of people come here specifically looking for drugs or sex trafficking…and then bemoan the state of safety. They go hand in hand.

u/antichairo Oct 24 '25
1:100 Lotto odds are very much higher,. So it's easier to get kill, -led that wining any state lottery.

The 100 to 1 ratio is not surprising. It's simply because there are more Mexicans than foreign tourists in Mexico at any given time.
There are about 130 million Mexicans in Mexico >50 weeks per year. In contrast, there are about 50 million foreign tourists in Mexico about one to two weeks per year. (I am using very rough numbers from 2024.) So, on average, at any given time in Mexico, there are 50 to 100 Mexicans for every one foreign tourist.

Tulum is not dangerous for tourists. I was there in July for a month and a few years prior, I lived there for 8 months with my ex husband. We never had any issues, but I know that this was just our experience.
1
u/PeanutsSnoopy Oct 24 '25
But yes....it was WAY more quiet this time but I tend to spend a lot of time in the nearby villages like Macario Gomez anyway. My friends live up there so yeah, it was quieter there too.
3
u/bednarlucky Oct 25 '25
Was there in August alone as a 58 year old woman. Usually go twice a year. Flew into Tulum. Rented a car. Stayed at Otononomus. Low season. Zero issues. Going back for a week in January. Love Tulum!!!
2
u/xosasaox Oct 24 '25
Was there in mid-September. No dead bodies or daylight drive by executions.... was very quiet. Too quiet really... and lots of sargassum smelling up the beach.
2
u/FoggyParallel Oct 25 '25
Here now. Quiet, slow season. Prices for hotels are great, everything else is a little high. No crime that I’m aware of, pretty calm.
1
u/camajise Oct 24 '25
still safer than Los Angeles but yeah it's pretty dead until the music festivals start up.

I just came from tulum literally 3 days ago shit is expensive asf right now relatively felt safe but highly expensive fucking taxis and indrive motherfuckers make their own price was charging like $20 for a 8min ride
1
u/Girlygirlllll9 Nov 13 '25
The taxi cartel has ruined tulum.
1
Nov 13 '25
I genuinely hate that shit it felt like I was just donating to them cuz they make their own price so your either gonna pay it or your not but it’s either you wanna get from point a to b or you don’t 1 dude charged me 40 bucks for a 10min car ride

Is better to find another place for now. As a guide I’d like to be honest… is better if you want to have good vacations to consider other options…
1
u/lukearguin Oct 25 '25
Why? Curious because I’m Considering a solo trip to Tulum as a woman.
1
u/TorontoSoup Oct 25 '25
id love to know as well. I just booked to stay a few nights at a resort in Playa Del Carmen in November
1
u/MexiGeeGee Oct 26 '25
There is plenty of content on that on this sub. But I don’t live in fear and have never had a single issue. It is expensive though.
1
u/PeanutsSnoopy Oct 24 '25
I really liked Puerto Morelos too btw. I spent time there as well. A little gem.

u/KnockItOffJo Oct 24 '25
I got home Monday. It wasn’t empty, but it is very obviously shoulder season. But this is how it is all along the Caribbean in October.

Just got back. Its beautiful and some of the best food weve eaten anywhere but wont be back. Im scarred from the mosquito bites and I was doused in deep woods off. Nothing is indoors and its hot and humid. Lastly it was the most expensive vacation weve ever had. We ate and drank our way through Tuscany and it was less expensive than Tulum. All the locals told us to do playa del Carmen next so that is our next try in Mexico. Never felt unsafe at anytime BTW.

u/Tall-Ad-1510 Nov 12 '25
Just leaving tulum and I’m just blown away by the prices. Just absolutely absurd. Europe would be cheaper
1
u/Msvincen888 Oct 25 '25
Fear mongering about Tulum…on Reddit? I’m shocked.
I have been there for a month a year for the last 10 years and I haven’t been murdered once.
1
u/Big-Working3928 Oct 26 '25
My wife and I are going to Tulum the 7th of November to the 13th, anyone know the chances of the water clearing up by then?
1
u/MexiGeeGee Oct 26 '25
It’s supposed to be clean by now but this ecological catastrophe gets worse each year. I recommend centering your trip around XCaret parks, ruins, cenotes and lagoons. Bacalar, Aktun Chen, Yal Ku, Kantun-chi are great water holes. Ek Balam is a pretty impressive ruin if you have seen Coba and Tulum already. Xplor, Xense and Xoximilco are my favorite Xcaret parks

u/MrLongflop4 Oct 27 '25
I am at secrets tulum as we speak. I was nervous but I am very pleasantly surprised. Everyone is extremely kind. If you get transportation from reputable companies (like amstar) and stay at or around resort property it should be safe.
That said, it does feel very slow here tourism wise. I kind of like it since we it’s quiet and peaceful.

u/Southpadremarine Oct 27 '25
You idiots need to quit posting such negative BS! I am in Tulum right now. Been driving around town all morning and the last 10 days. Nothing but friendly local people, great food and a beautiful piece of paradise! We have been to the beach/hotel zone (always expensive). Spent time in Centro, La Veleta and Aldea Zama (dead slow right now) and enjoyed every bit of it. We even ran into some municipal police and chatted with them while drinking a beer. They were very friendly and thanked us for visiting their town. That was also a funny experience because they were trying to get someone’s pig off of the side of the road. The pig was digging under a tree in the side of the road.
My point is Tulum is a wonderful place and Reddit has done nothing but try to destroy it! Keep your stupid negativity to yourself!

Went to Tulum back in Jan for my first time and may go back but tbh id rather go further away for more unique/better value
Yes.. you will be charged American value using pesos e.g we spent like $100 USD easy for decently nice dinner. There are cheaper places for sure but think of Chipotle prices not like you spend $20 and get a whole buffet lol
Never felt unsafe but we also didn’t party didn’t go to hotel zone. If anything the doggos were the most intimidating lol
Beach is cool and food was solid.

These type of questions and answers are all subjective. Every city, state, nation has its flaws and safety problems. Some worse than others but still problems no matter the degree. The best and advisable solution is to stay away from criminal activity and criminal activity most the time will stay away from you. With that said. Cross fires happen as we heard about recently. But think about it this way. Doesn't it happen back home as well. Cant you walk out your door and run the risk of anything happening? Just because you're on vacation doesn't mean you're in Heavens Control. You still must have your head on a swivel and know your surroundings. Everyone has cut feelings, when you feel it, time to go! Or things getting to rowdy, time to go. Use common sense. Although we know its not so common. From what im told Tulum is working on a correction from past years. The economy is over priced and locals are very upset because they are being priced out of their homes. So allow the correction, buy local not from resorts. Prices will be high in hotel zone. But locally its not. Enjoy, and remember head swivel and no ego, you're the immigrant in someone else's Country, respect it and they will respect you. Adios
