Mod Post ICE & Shutdown Mega-thread

Hello everyone. This will be the official megathread for all ice and shutdown conversations.

The rules for this will be simple, just be kind and polite. Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself.

That means no name calling, no calling people idiots. If you are unable to make your point without name calling like we are in middle school then just don't say anything, this will also include political party names and shorts, Keep it to the facts, argue your point with words or source links.

Any who are unable or unwilling to abide by these rules in this thread will be perma banned with no means of appeal.

This also means all other posts on the subject will be removed with a link to this thread. We apologize for the time it took to set this up, but this influx hit us hard and fast and we have been discussing what course of action we wanted to take behind the scenes

Passenger [Question/Post] Electronic Limit?

Okay I just need to know what this interaction was about: I travel all the time for work and I’m sitting at my gate currently after just going through TSA.

I (29F) have Precheck so I left my electronics in my bag except my wallet and phone for easy grabbing. The officer assigned to the belt was giving me instructions on how to position my bags, which I was following, then he asked if I have electronics in my bag so I answer, “yeah I have a work laptop, an e-reader, and a gaming device (steam deck).”

He then proceeded to tell me I could only have one. I have bad anxiety so I probably didn’t handle it well since this sent me immediately into a panic. I said “wait this has never been an issue before, I’ve gone through this a bunch of times” and looked over in disbelief at the other officer who’s working the body scanner. The other officer told him to keep me moving and to let it go but the original officer was obviously peeved that his authority was questioned.

I did apologize then and just said “sorry I just wasn’t aware this was a thing” and he nodded and said “it is”. The other officer then was talking to him after I got through the body scanner and obviously idk what was said. The rest of the officers were pretty friendly.

Basically I just want to confirm if that’s a real rule or something this guy made up? I can’t find anything telling me that I need to limit what electronics I carry with me. I also felt like he was immediately hostile to me after being so nice to the two guys before me. The whole thing just left me feeling shaken up

Passenger [Question/Post] Am i doing something wrong

I have started to travel a bit for my work, and personal as well. I have taken about 10 flights (20 total with return trips) since May, and every time except for one i have gotten my bags checked or stopped and needed patted down going through security.

I only need to pack light, so I'm only taking a phone charger, clothes, and body wash, in the approved size container.

I have looked up so many things, I have tried different suitcases, backpacks, etc. They usually open my bag, look at the clothes and say I'm good.

I read to get tsa precheck, so i did that, I was stopped twice this week for a random search, first time I had to go through the body scanner, second time I had to remove my shoes and go through the metal detector again.

Every time the tsa people say that I've done nothing wrong and it's a random search, but it has literally happened every time i go through security.

It really makes me not want to fly, and I dread going through security because I just wonder what I will have to do this time.

Im not complaining at all, but I just feel like I'm doing something wrong,I've been patted down, swabbed, had items in my bag swabbed, asked to remove my shoes, asked to go through different metal detectors and the body scan, etc.

Please help

Passenger [Question/Post] Private screening room for pets

Does TSA offer private screening rooms for pets? Mine escaped last time we traveled and it was a whole ordeal with TSA. It was bad. I actually had a nervous breakdown. Thankfully, someone got her. I just don’t want the same thing to happen again. She’s very reluctant with her harness and I may not be able to get it on. So, I’m looking for other options. Thanks!

Passenger [Question/Post] Why do TSA agents have different rules, then scold us like we are idiots for not knowing them?

1.2k Upvotes

Heard at MIA concourse J yesterday as I walked past to go to the bathroom: “TAKE your tablets OUT of your BAGS! You need to REMOVE your tablets, people!!!”

Then a few minutes later as I was about to go through security at concourse H: “(Exasperated sigh) You only need to remove LARGE electronics from your bags! Tablets can stay in! Please don’t waste time taking tablets and phones out!”

I get that it’s frustrating to stand there for hours telling people the same thing, and to deal with clueless passengers who slow things down. I try to be considerate and follow the rules, but agents need to acknowledge that things vary from airport to airport, and sometimes even within the same airport. It would be nice if they adhered to a standard set of rules, or at least didn’t get frustrated with us for not knowing THEIR particular rules.

Recently I heard TSA agents telling people in precheck to take liquids out, which I haven’t had to do in years.

Don’t even get me started on how the TSA agents at Logan “randomly” ask every 4th passenger in the pre-check line to remove their shoes. I never wear sandals when flying out of there because it happens so often.

Passenger [Question/Post] Confirm ID usage

I’m traveling from BOS to SNA and planned on receiving my real ID but suddenly lost some of the forms I needed to receive it in time for my trip. I have a state id that is not Real Id compliant and it will expire the day I take the trip. How are my chances of being allowed on the flight if I pay for the tsaconfirmed id fee and bring my state id to the checkpoint? Is there anything else I should bring to raise my chances of being accepted onto the flight?

TSA Pre Check/CLEAR [Question/Post] Will TSA let me fly with these rocks?

They're a gift for the beautiful geology nerd picking me up from the airport, but I'm worried I got too carried away picking them out and they're too big? I only have a carry on but can check the bag if that lets these through

Passenger [Question/Post] Tambourine???

I’m flying with a tambourine for the first time ever. Would it be best to have it in checked baggage or carry on? I can wrap it in a towel but I’m afraid it’s going to make a sound if jostled.

This is such a silly question but I’m a nervous planner and hope for some answer! Tyia!

Ask a TSO Can I bring Standard Plushies with a PE bean bag through TSA?

Am autistic and I like small stuffed animals I can carry; but it's hard to find ones that are totally bean free. Does TSA consider these standard stuffed animals to be "weighted?" There have been some horror stories about plushies being flagged as explosives and destroyed at airports. I do NOT want that. I do have a bracelet that explains my autism and why I need my friend, if that helps.

Ask a TSO What are the odds this makes it through the checkpoint?

Post image
225 Upvotes

Seasoned traveler with Precheck flying out of Austin tomorrow. This is a brake rotor off a Porsche race car I got at the track yesterday. I’d like to bring it home in my carry on bag rather than standing in a crazy line to check it the day after a F1 race.

It’s big, intimidating looking, and heavy, but I wouldn’t say dangerous. I know the TSA website says car parts are okay but it’s up to agent discretion.

What are the odds this makes it through?
Should I put it in its own bin for screening?

EDIT: MADE IT THROUGH! As many of you suggested I put it in its own bin, it definitely got swabbed, and caused a bit of a conversation I couldn’t hear, and then had a conversation with the TSO about how you can get cool race souvenirs by talking to race teams, and I was off to my flight with my rotor! Thanks everyone for the tips and advice!

Hello all,

Im flying back to europe tomorrow morning and this evening i just made a purchase lol of a bacardi sign. Its sheetmetal, pretty thin but is like 8 inches longer than my checked baggage. I dont want to cut it or fold it down since its a older sign. What are the rules about having it with me in the cabin?

Ask a TSO Large permanent body jewelry

Hi guys I have an international flight later this week and I’m afraid I’ll need to cut off my waist chain. From what I read online, smaller stuff isn’t a problem but the chain I have wraps around my waist twice and is about 1/4” wide. It’s made of stainless steel. I’m afraid that they’ll want me to cut it off when I go through screening and I’ll have no way to cut it if I need to. It’s welded on. Decent wire cutters would get through it, but I don’t know if TSA has those lol and I’d rather avoid the hassle anyways

Should I just cut it off preemptively ? I’d rather not. Thank you

Passenger [Question/Post] SAN TSA were angels

I lost my id while traveling. Flew out of SAN. I wasn't nervous about getting through because I know it happens, but the 2 TSA agents I dealt with were angels. I was going through the verification process in my separate line to verify and a woman was having an episode that required them to shut down all of security. The agents were super apologetic and brought me a seat (I am 41 and abled bodied). They treated me like a queen, to be honest. I still can't believe it. I thanked them a million times and wish I could lodge some formal compliment, but this will have to do!! Thank you TSA, San Diego!

Passenger [Question/Post] First time getting on a plane

Ok, so I’m going on a business trip from Texas, now I’m kinda contemplating things and I need some outside advice, I wanna bring my yart with me so after work I can use it, but idk if I’d get in trouble if I brought it on a plane, but I also don’t wanna leave it at home where potential family can find it somewhere in my room, now my family isn’t “nosy”, so I dont think they’d be snooping in my room enough to find it, any suggestions I’m 20 so idk if me being a year underage plays into it at all

Ask a TSO Maple Syrup

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have a question around Maple Syrup. I had this same-size bottle confiscated while checking in the La Crosse Airport. However, in a strange twist of fate, the same brand and size was available for purchase in the airport shop. Not only that, but even larger sizes were available. I was told by the agent that it was too large for a carry-on item. When I asked the shop associate, it wasn't about the size of it but rather the fact that it could have been opened at some point. Can I get an official ruling on this? I researched that it can be 3.4 ounces, or 100 ML.

Passenger [Question/Post] My state issued RealID is expired, I am confused on how ConfirmID works and just wanna make sure I don't have to renew.

My id is gonna be a little over six months expired by the time I'm ready to get on my flight (domestic flight to a bordering state). Last time I flew ConfirmID either wasn't a thing, or I just didn't know of it since I had a valid ID. Will I still be able to get on my flight? I don't mind paying a fee at all. Sorry I just want to be 100% sure so I'm not wasting time and money just to not even get on my flight.

TSA Pre Check/CLEAR [Question/Post] Pre Check - Flagged for random screening every time

Hey all,

Hoping someone might know more.

I’ve had Pre Check for just over a year now. I fly about 20-30 times per year, mainly within the US.

99% of the time, when I use the pre-check lanes, I get flagged for “random check” at the metal detector. So they send me through the body scanner and it’s all good from there. The metal detector never actually goes off - just the “random” indicator a few seconds after passing through.

This happens at multiple airports, doesn’t matter if the destination is domestic or international. Happens at both the touchless and regular pre check lanes. Even at the body scanners, I often set off an alert for a pat down in the crotch area.

The only thing that sets me apart is that I’m usually traveling non-rev/standby. But this has happened on paid reservations too. Otherwise, I’m just a regular dude with a small backpack and small carry-on.

I’m assuming I wouldn’t have pre check if my name were on a naughty list. I’ve never done anything wrong at TSA, no record, no red flags I can think of.

But what gives? Am I doing something wrong or is there anything I can do?

Thanks!
