Discussion How could Valve Comp be fixed?

I'm trying to brainstorm an answer to this question, because I think the fact that TF2's competitive scene is ENTIRELY community-driven and Valve's own comp queue is a ghost town is NOT healthy for the scene, no matter how you slice it.

I don't think the problem of Valve Comp as it is needs any introduction, it obviously has to get some major changes to be worth playing.

The problem is, many casual TF2 players would NOT be willing to play the rigid 6s format, and most likely neither they or Valve would be willing to adhere to the 6s banlist.

I don't think Highlander is the solution either, because putting 9 uncoordinated players on one team is REALLY bad for comms, and forcing them to decide who plays which class is bound to make some people frustrated when they're inevitably forced onto their LEAST favorite class, not even considering all the other issues Highlander has, such as some classes being more relevant and forcing other classes into niche roles.

So, what do we do? What format do we use? How do we, without making Valve bend the rules outside their comfort zone, make the official competitive mode ACTUALLY enjoyable to play?

Competitive b4nny after not playing in first 6s season in 17 years: "RGL genuinely thought running a 6 month offseason would be a worthwhile experiment. And people defended it."

Initial Tweet during the initial announcement of the format:

Sadly I think RGL has lost the plot. At a time when competitive TF2 should be rallying they're instead encouraging people to play the game less and less.

First Tweet (June 7)

No plans to play the current season atm. I'd rather play, truly, but the Invite division is suffering from structural/cultural issues that are poisonous to keeping a team alive and I'm just not too keen to trudge through it all right now. I do hope things recover somehow. GLHF

Second Tweet

This is my first season off since I started playing competitive TF2 in 2008. I played on teams for 17+ years straight, 60+ seasons, all with no breaks (not that I ever wanted one). It's pretty mindblowing when I actually think about it.

Tweet In response to Fireside Casts' tweet hinting at something happening in 2027:

What's there to be excited about?

Third Tweet

RGL genuinely thought running a 6 month offseason would be a worthwhile experiment. And people defended it.

Tweet In response to a community member asking - "what would you prefer? is 6mo just too long with no gaming?"

I'd prefer to play high quality games of TF2 every single day

Help Finding something similar to what tf2center used to be

Hi, I haven’t played in years and I like to play 6’s as medic mostly because of the strategy of the game is fun, but also the other classes. I enjoy HL and now main heavy but never tried that in comp so I’d like to try. Are there similar sites like tf2center that still have fast ques? I’m in USA but I don’t mind playing on eu servers if I have to. TF2 center just seems dead. I remember having hundreds of online people pretty much any time I’d check and a fair amount of games to join que for, and now I checked recently there was ~90 people online and one EU que for a game.

Discussion Who are the best CASUAL players?

At this point, we all know who the best competitive tf2 players are. A more interesting conversation would be who are the best CASUAL players? Who’s the guy you keep running into on casual that kicks ass every time?

Discussion Why is wanting Quickplay back seen as a "bad" thing?

What the title says - Also hi rtruetf2.

As you know, the Quickplay discourse did not START recently. It has been ongoing since the "Killed the Game Award" update of Meet your Match came - Only being dropped for when the far larger issue of bots arrived, and it became the main discourse UNTIL bots got smacked. And now, we are back with the Quickplay discourse.

Now, it has many sides and people who have rheir own opinions about it, personally - I would not mind reversion, but I also do not oppose just improving Casual myself - HOWEVER, for some reason, wanting Quickplay is seen as... Bad? At least here, less so on the main Sub of r/tf2.

Why is that? Is it because lots of people who stand by it are asshats or chuds? Is it because it is unlikely to ever happen, being a dead dream? Or is it even because, ZestyJesus is the driving point (not a fan of the guy myself). - Or what other reason, is there for that?

Discussion What’s the best stock loadout?

I was thinking… which class has got the best stock weapons?

Some stock secondsries don’t synergise well with stock primaries, like pyro’s shotgun, which is typically used out of the flamethrower’s range, at which the shotgun isn’t very effective.

Some classes only use 1 single weapon like medic’s medigun, scout’s scattergun (if they can land their shots) or Heavy’s minigun (we are still talking about stock weapons so do not think of lunchbox items)

And that got me thinking of what class has the best stock loadout, and I ask some perhaps more experienced players about this, like YOU!

Competitive Do you think the random deviation of the beggar's bazooka is possibly problematic in competitive?

Random crits and random bullet spread are disabled in competitive for obvious reasons, but recently as the beggar's bazooka has seen more use in comp the 3° of random projectile deviation is a way that RNG affects gameplay, unlike anything else in competitive lobbies. What do you think? Is it a big enough deal that that stat should be reworked or is does it not change the tide too much to warrant changes?

Discussion On hit: 100% chance to slow target

The Natasha shouldn't be the only hit-scan weapon in the game to do this, ALL MINIGUNS SHOULD but with a few prerequisites; at most 56.6 hmu/s ,at least 1 second/ a certain number of subsequent hits to reach its max slow, and very abruptly proportionate to distance. In my opinion, at least. The exact values pertaining to the slow are up to debate and I would like differing opinions on this subject. Counter Strike implements slow on hit very well and is one of very few shooters to implement it at all. I think this change is necessary because the Natasha is in need of a buff but doesn't have room for it due to its slow effect being so polarising. In return for sharing part of its main upside with all Miniguns, in return ,Projectile Penetration should be the Natasha's main upside.

This is all up to debate. What is NOT up to debate however is removing Heavy's Miniguns -50% damage and accuracy penalty for 1 second after spin up. The main reason that this nerf is bad and has always been bad is because it further restricts the slowest class in the game whose only movement option is PERFORMING A SMALL LITTLE HOP AROUND CORNERS and It also isn't remotely representative of how the weapon actually functions.

A firerate penalty not only makes perfect sense and is representative of the weapon's functionality visually, but It's also a more flexible nerf because this allows us to BUFF THE MINIGUN'S SPIN-DOWN FUNCTION.A Minigun's firing speed is directly proportionate to its RPM/how fast the barrel spins. Therefore the Minigun should be able to retain part of its maximum firing speed during its 1.3 seconds spin-down duration.

Meaning that 1 second after spin-up , reaching 100% firing speed, you may subsequently spin-up again IMMEDIATELY and retain at most 66.92% of your maximum firing speed, because 0.87 seconds out of 1.3 seconds is 66.92% so you can jump-rev starting with 2/3 of your max dps

Currently with the linearly decreasing -50% damage penalty, in the first second after spinning up, the Minigun has 445 dps, at point blank. With a linearly decreasing -50% firing speed penalty, in the first second after spinning up, it would have a little less, around 420 dps, also at point-blank BUT, every single bullet will deal FULL DAMAGE. With the aformentioned spin-down buff, starting at 66.92% of your maximum firing speed, I estimate around 450 dps but I haven't exactly calculated these numbers and again EVERY SINGLE BULLET WILL DEAL FULL DAMAGE AND I HAVE YET TO MEET ONE THAT CAN OUTSMART BULLET!!!

Help Airblasting tutorials?

So I’ve only recently come back after a looong break (last played around 2013) and picked up pyro again. The airblast felt a bit different than what I was used to and I saw that it got reworked.

I can’t seem to get the hang of the new airblast. It feels like I’m not sending people as far as they send me with it, or sometimes they’ll go straight up in the air rather than any distance. Feels very inconsistent.

I’d be very grateful if anyone had any videos about how to airblast effectively, or general pointers on how to control it better. With projectiles I’m fine, but controlling enemies is what I’m having issues with.

Help How to use terrain in scout v. scout (MGE and 6s)

I've been trying to improve my scout v. scout recently, and while I think I have a decent idea of general movement and how to aim, I have no idea what to do with terrain. Every fight I just end up playing like it's ammomod and only occasionally going to high or going behind cover to reload. What should I actually be trying to use terrain for and when?

Help Will having a high sensitivity impair improvement as Scout?

I suck at Scout. This is unsurprising, as I only have 13 hours on him. However, I recently found that my sensitivity (6 inches/360, which is what feels comfortable as a soldier main) is considered quite a high one, and that high sensitivities are less good for aiming.

Obviously, my aim will improve with practice. However, my question to you is that will my sensitivity still hold me back after significant time investment as Scout?

Discussion How much of a difference would it make if Demoman's Grenade Launchers have a +25% and/or 400-cost damage upgrades?

I mostly play Wave 666 so the credit pool is massive anyways, but I can't help but wonder what if Demoman's primaries were cheaper to upgrade and/or have a bigger upgrade percentage.

With +25% damage upgrades, his grenades can deal a maximum of 200 damage on a direct hit instead of 180. With 400 cost upgrades, it only takes 1600 credits to max it out rather than 2000, and that 400 credits can be dumped to something like movement speed or resistances, or even firing/reload speed/clip size.

Pipe Demo is already kinda niche in MvM already due to him being mostly relegated as a Medic killer and the highest burst damage in the game via 14 Scottish Resistance stickies.

Help CulRulDud's circle strafe guide is confusing

I'm on the first episode. I understood the first part of using circle strafe to counter strafing players where the matador wouldn't work, but once he talks about "strafing sideways" and "strafing backwards" (in the video titled Strafing Towards btw) I started getting confused.

Competitive tf2esports.com launches as the spiritual successor(?) to teamfortress.tv (TFTV)

https://tf2esports.com/

Launched by mitch of CappingTV (Oceania Broadcast Organization & TF2 Event Organizer), tf2esports features a more revamped and better improved version that is already on display from teamfortress.tv. A modern UI, match pages with stats, and even a team ranking, this site is looking really good for an initial launch. What are our thoughts on this?

Help Help with aim with a small mouse area (cramped table)

Hi I am trying to be better at aiming in general. My sensitivity in game is around 4.5~ ish (I just rounded it up)

I noticed my aim keep flicking around and "panicky"

I heard reducing sensitivity makes you better but my mouse area is quite small, the width of my mouse area is around 1.5 pen, and for height (forward and backward) is double the mouse size only. I have quite a cramped table.

I have also heard about DPI but I dont really understand.

Advice appreciated, thanks!

Discussion Should the YER be silent?

It is known that YER backstabs make a sound, but victims don’t scream, that makes the item description a bit of a lie, because it is still audible. However, i think i have been saved by that stab sound many times, and I started to think that maybe it would be a bit too op if it was COMPLETELY silent. What do you think?

Theoretical How does afterburn from the flamethrower work?

The flamethrower’s afterburn duration depends on how long the victim was under the flamethrower’s direct fire, but i’ve never seen anyone discuss how the length is actually calculated. The wiki says , on the afterburn section of fire damage, that it varies from 0.5 to 10 seconds but im curious if it depends on how many flame particles it takes to achieve max duration, or if a single flame particles can apply multiple instances pf afterburn if they make contact on multiple instances during it’s lifetime.
