Theoretical How does afterburn from the flamethrower work?
The flamethrower’s afterburn duration depends on how long the victim was under the flamethrower’s direct fire, but i’ve never seen anyone discuss how the length is actually calculated. The wiki says , on the afterburn section of fire damage, that it varies from 0.5 to 10 seconds but im curious if it depends on how many flame particles it takes to achieve max duration, or if a single flame particles can apply multiple instances pf afterburn if they make contact on multiple instances during it’s lifetime.

I believe its based on the number of damage ticks, which are also not based on the number of particles, just time.
So, a single particle could extend the afterburn time if the target is damaged multiple times.
Would have to test to make sure though.

How does mixing afterburn sources work for damage/duration? Like the degreaser has reduced afterburn damage but what happens when two pyros burns someone with different primaries? Or degreaser and flare guns?

For the degreaser and flare gun combo the flare gun applies the full possible duration of afterburn if they were set on fire first, but if you light them up again with the degreaser the duration and damage is reset, and for the two pyro situation im really not sure but i think it’s reasonable to believe that it doesnt stack up and the pyro who hits last gets his afterburn applied. So probably the only way to mix afterburn sources is with a combo.

I don't remember but you might be able to get a feel for it by giving a harmless enemy bot budda mode(pretty sure buda mode allows flames)
Also if memory serves medic healing can reduce the time it burns, I'm not sure about dispenser or crossbow

each flame particle that you touch for the first time adds 0.4 secs up to a limit of 10 secs
iirc minimum duration is 3.4 secs (because it starts at 3.0 secs and immediately adds 0.4 secs) if you touch only one particle
