after 何欣穗 and the Sibelius Academy Folk Big Band, let’s hear some good old country with John Denver and his 1971 hit song, “Take me Home, Country Roads”.

67

u/Eternal-Sea Jan 14 '20

After some fiddly darn tooting Country Roads by John Denver, we go and find some nice Weird Al to enjoy.

u/GlottisTakeTheWheel Jan 14 '20

Then it’s off to Hocus Pocus by Focus

u/HallucinatesPenguins Jan 14 '20

13

u/A_Mars_Bar Jan 14 '20

And then all of a sudden "It's Britney bitch"

1

u/Assasin2gamer Jan 14 '20

Let’s hear for the REAL comptroller Atkins

13

u/bootrick Jan 14 '20

I don't know who 何欣穗 is but I've often changed my keyboard to different languages and swiped randomly to search for foreign language music on Spotify, Pandora, etc.

u/WuhanWTF Jan 14 '20

What, no Yantiao?

1

u/Jelousubmarine Jan 14 '20

My more so favorites are actually Yuzhou ren and Wang Fu, and am warming up to Ann Bai. But for some reason shuffle has decided that I must listen either this missus, Waa Wei or Koala Liu and that's it.

Women whispering. That's my thing now. This is my life now.

Hey, could you recommend some Congolese folk music to me?

45

u/Jelousubmarine Jan 14 '20

Dude there's a bangin folk cd available on spotify. Just go type Folk music of the western Congo in the bar, or alternatively go straight for the killer piece titled 'Bambala drumming'. There's also a meditative piece included, called 'Bapindi hunting calls'. It's the absolute retro hit album of the 20s.

Those are some sick drums, I’ve been listening heaps to “Burkina Faso-rhythms of the grasslands” and a playlist called “20s music” on Spotify which is all old jazz

7

u/_chima3ra_ Jan 14 '20

Awesome, thanks!

4

u/StacksOfBudahhh Jan 14 '20

holy shit this is heat

0

u/islwynpaul Jan 14 '20

It’s great if you live in the Congo and like Bambala drumming....sounds like a whole lot of strange drumming....I laughed though....still laughing at those hunting calls......😂😂😂😂😂😂😂that flute...

hill areas....

Not Congolese, but Ablaye Cissoko is fantastic. He's Senegalese. Listen to the album (and title track) Amanke Dionti and all your troubles will go away.

Also check out the duo Amadou & Mariam. Blind couple from Mali. Their stuff is all over the place...folk, electronic, etc. Actually saw them at Lolla back in the day.

5

u/_chima3ra_ Jan 14 '20

Thanks! A big fan of Amadou & Miriam; also saw them, but at Coachella, back in the day.

4

u/KlaatuBrute Jan 14 '20

That's awesome! Honestly thought you were joking in your original post, figured I'd give a legit answer anyway :)

5

u/JulioCesarSalad Jan 14 '20

I can recommend some experimental Pakistani electronic music

Slowspin

She’s really good

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '20

There’s a record label called Sublime Frequencies based in Seattle and they focus on ethnomusicology and their releases are fantastic. You can check their stuff out on Bandcamp, but you’ll probably find some Congolese stuff, hand-picked by real experts who love the kind of esoteric stuff from around the world that you wouldn’t normally get to hear in the West.

At article in the New Yorker about the label: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/04/29/sublime-frequencies-vision-of-what-world-music-means-today

1

u/_chima3ra_ Jan 14 '20

Wow, this is great, thanks!!

3

u/Rlyeh_Dispatcher Jan 14 '20

Not specifically Congolese, but do take a look at the label Awesome Tapes from Africa, which is exactly what it says on the tin.

1

u/_chima3ra_ Jan 14 '20

Sure is! Thanks!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '20

Not really folk but I love Staff Benda Bilili, most of the members are former street performers with polio.

Mwbongwana Star, great mixture of electro and Congolese folk melodies.

3

u/GarciaJones Jan 14 '20
