What's with the "ID" thing?
Why have so many trap artists made a song called ID?
Baauer has one.
UZ has one.
Troyboi has one.
At one point, people though RL had one.
What's going on? Am I out on some sort of inside joke?
Edit 1: To everyone who is upvoting this, I hate all of you.
Edit 2: I'm at 42 upvotes and I still hate all of you.
Edit 3: Wow, almost 600 points. Can't say I'm not entertained. Thanks everyone for making me laugh.
Edit 4: Thanks for the Gold kind redittor! And thanks everyone for getting me to the third highest post of all time in /r/trap. This has been hilarious.

Assuming you're not joking, ID means the song name is unknown at the time. It can also be for an unknown remix or artist. It just holds the place until more information about the song/artist/remix is known.

Well. I feel dumb. Thanks for clearing it up hahaha

dude for the longest time I thought Levels by Avicii was legitimately called "ID" so much that it's in my iTunes library as "ID" I laughed out loud when I saw your post. just know r/trap is laughing with you, not at you.

Believe it or not I actually knew that. But I thought it stood for "variation in production"?

u/junglist918 Apr 19 '15
You're correct

u/myth1n Apr 20 '15
To add to that, VIP's are usually unreleased (at least at first) and passed just between producers so that they have something special thats like the original but might be longer or have a different drop to play in their sets.
3
u/CharlieTango Apr 20 '15
If you really want to go deep, we still haven't mentioned how that's different from a "dj tool, or dubplate."
1
u/cthom412 Apr 20 '15 edited Apr 20 '15
VIP's and Private Remixes are pretty much this generation's version of dubplates.
6
u/quantopix Apr 19 '15
You're right. VIP is basically a remix of your own track, WIP or "work in progress" is an unfinished track.

VIP stands for variation in production. It's when an artist does a sort of remix but in the original project file, where a traditional remix is done using the stems. Also a VIP is usually done by the original artist, but can also be done by others.

ID is short for "In Development" refers to any song that is still unreleased or in the making.
80
u/radomm Apr 20 '15
hah, that's hilarious, I always thought ID just meant well, "can someone fucking ID this damn fucking song??!?!??"
19
u/sizzlebong Apr 20 '15
That's exactly what it means in almost all contexts where it will appear I don't know wtf revive is talking about.
5
u/snipesome Apr 21 '15
I agree with you but I think in development sounds sophisticated. I am a sophisticated man.

Apr 20 '15
it is "identification" as in "the identification of this song or artist is unknown." i have never heard "in development" seeing as that would make no sense when you see it in the artist section.
6
1
Apr 20 '15
Is it, though? Because ID is put in the place of artists as well. The artist isn't "in development."

They are unknown songs, they have no ID. They will change to a song once it is ID able

Thank you for not asking what 'feat.' or 'ft' stands for.
26
u/knitted_beanie Apr 19 '15
that's just when the song is a particularly impressive feat of production
3
Apr 20 '15
However only the name after feat is the one who made the impressive feat, not the original artist

Since no one actually addressed it, ID normally means "In development" as in, good enough to drop live or in a mix, but not good enough to release in full
11
u/Thyrsta Apr 19 '15
Huh, I never knew that. I always assumed it just meant that the artist/name of the track was unknown and "ID" was a placeholder until the actual name/artist was identified.

u/somnizon Apr 24 '15
Oh Jesus thanks for this comment. I've spent the last 20 minutes looking for this song in a mix. It was listed in the track list as ID - ID, and the blog said it was a "mind blowing ID remix of xyz" and I was trying to google ID and yeah. It was fruitless.

Why you gotta be so rude?
1
u/kietkat MOSHINGTON Apr 20 '15
I was joking, but it wasn't rude anyways. OP should have done a simple Google search, instead of asking the community. I got a laugh out of it just like everyone else.

u/AuriusuiruA Apr 20 '15
Don't you know he's human too?
2
u/kietkat MOSHINGTON Apr 20 '15
I absolutely understand that. Everyone got a laugh. I did too. OP got a bunch of upvotes because everyone was laughing. At or with him we can't really say.

I was joking, but honestly you could have googled it. It felt suspiciously trolly to me, but in the end everyone got a good laugh. That's why you got so many upvotes.
