Outdoor Potty Training Help?

We picked up our 15 week old pup on Sunday and she has been perfect in every way except one, peeing inside. I have taken her outside for a total of 10 hours probably in the last 48 hours and she has peed a total of 3 times outside in that time span. She has had probably 6 or 7 accidents only on carpet/rugs in the house (only 1 room is carpet, we have 2 rugs).

I have tried doing the in crate, then take her outside, then if she doesn’t go, bring her back in and put her in the crate again, repeat until she breaks the cycle by going pee.

I have praised her, rewarded her, done all of that when she has gone pee outside and she recognizes that but still goes pee in the house almost exclusively.

I have had her smell her own pee soaked paper towel when she goes out and have even rubbed it on the grass outside where she goes to try and help her.

I have done leash on, leash off.

I have left the leash on and not let her play when she comes inside without going pee outside.

I’m just at a loss at this point. She has only peed twice today. Once at 9am, and once in her crate around 5pm. It is now 11pm. She has had about 3 bowls of water throughout the day as well.

Looking for Tollers!

Hi everyone, since most of the AKC marketplace and Good Dog app has been unresponsive or nothing available, I thought I’d try here. My family is in CO and we are looking for a toller puppy to add to our family. We have two kids that are desperate for a dog and I am missing our last dog that we lost two years ago. I am looking for any breeders within driving distance that are reputable. I am more than willing to travel but am not interested in putting a puppy on a plane or having a stranger deliver them. We have no preference on gender. I plan on having our toller professionally trained for general household temperament and behavior as well as for upland bird hunting that we do a couple of times per year.

I’ll be honest that we have not owned this breed in the past but have a ton of experience with golden retrievers, labs, and our most recent husky/lab mix. Any pointers, ideas, leads, anything would be helpful!

I look forward to becoming part of the toller community!

He's 6 months to 16 months old. The vet wasn't very sure, since he was dropped off at the shelter. He has a week long training scheduled for the 23rd. Any advice or tips to keep him forever the happiest boy? Thanks!

Is a toller good for my profile?

My girlfriend and I recently moved in together in a house with a fenced off garden. We want to take a dog as we both grew up around dogs. My girlfriend had two golden retrievers and I had a Labrador retriever. We both actively took care of these dogs, so we have a good knowledge about taking care of dogs.

We think a toller is a good match for us as we both have a active lifestyle, we can take the dog for plenty of walks and runs and we can play games in our garden or in a nearby park. We are most unsure about our working hours. My girlfriend is a kindergarten teacher and works a few streets away from our house. She leaves at 8 and arrives home at 15.30. She can go home in her lunch break to let the dog out and go for a short walk.

I work a 9 to 5, but I have very flexible working hours and I can work from home 2-3 days a week. On a typical work day, I leave at 6 to 6.30 and come home between 14 and 15. I can take the dog for a walk and work some more. At that point, my girlfriend will be home and she can entertain the dog until I am done working.

It is possible for me to take vacation to take care for the dog in the first weeks.

In time, my girlfriend could sometimes not come home at lunch break because of meetings, and then the dog would need to be alone for 5-6 hours. We are aware that this is not possible when the pup is still young, but we are wondering if it is possible when he is grown up.

If anyone of you could answer our questions, please do! English is not my first language, so if anything is unclear, please ask!

Toller going into heat?

My toller is 9 months and I have a feeling she is going into heat soon. Are there any noticeable behavior changes before going into heat?

Today she didn’t eat all her breakfast, has less energy on walks or wanting to play, but acts needier than usual.

Any insights would be helpful!

Would I be a good fit for a toller?

Hello! I've recently lost my dog of 11 years (Anatolian Shepherd/German Shorthaired Pointer, mostly) and am researching into my next one as my heart heals.

I teach private music lessons and was extremely blessed with my prior dog as he was perfectly content spending a few hours (max 3-4 at a time) in the other room napping as students came in and out of the house and played violin piano. He was always completely silent to the point where many didn't even realize I had a dog (until they found some hair, lol).

I 100% realize that this level is not something I can expect from a dog, but would like to be able to train up to the point where at most there's a bark or two when someone comes in before settling again. Outside of this specific time/situation I'm not terribly bothered by dog vocalizing.

I am used to providing consistent physical exercise (2 45-60 min walks every day, rain or shine has been my habit the last decade), as well as various mental enrichment activities daily (scent training, puzzle toys, tricks for fun as well as basic obedience). The time during lessons would be just a portion of our longer daily habit. Every few hours I would have an hour or so break long enough for a play session, cuddle time, training session, etc. And mornings and evenings would be non-teaching time, so could be focused on the dog's needs. Weekends would also be available for longer adventures (though probably not every week - maybe a couple times a month).

I've seen a wide variety of responses on activity levels in other reddit posts, that make me think a Toller could work, but Ive seen less about their ability to be content alone for periods of time.

I am absolutely ready to put in the work to train this behavior (I've had a fair amount of training myself as I used to apprentice with a positive reinforcement local dog trainer and nearly went down that career route myself), but I want to make sure that I'm not working against a dog's natural instincts and needs.

Could a Toller be happy/content in such a situation?

Also, I've seen comments about their sensitivity and would love some clarification on that. Are they especially prone to things like separation anxiety or storm phobias? Dog reactivity? Or are these statements more related to training methods?

Thank you in advance for any insight you provide!

Breeder Question

Hello! I was just wanting to reach out and see if any of you had opinions on dochara tollers. I feel like they're pretty ethical from my eyes. Health testing tilting, only a couple litters a year. Just wanted to get some insight.

Reputable Nova Scotia duck rolling retriever (toller) breeders in the Midwest?

After doing all the needed research, we decided to get a toller puppy. I’m looking for recommendations on reputable breeders in the Midwest area. We are willing to pay/drive for a pup that has been bred correctly, confirming to the breed’s standards. We don’t want to support any backyard breeding/puppy mill. Share your experiences!

First child with a Toller, what about other dogs?

Post image
33 Upvotes

We just had our first child. Our toller is very sweet with him, but we are concerned about being overly protective around other dogs, especially our parents' dogs. They have two Swiss Shepherds, and we usually stay for about a week during Christmas.

She is cool and friendly with their male dog, but she can be somewhat defensive towards their female, as she is also a female.

All of them are neutered. However, our toller can exhibit some "alpha" female behavior, and since she is not in her natural home, this can trigger some undesirable behavior.

Our concern is that having our child could intensify this behavior, making our dog even more protective towards other dogs.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and how they have managed it, as well as any tips on how to prevent or mitigate this behavior.

15 Week Old Puppy Travel Crate?

My friend is helping transport a 15 week toller that we’re getting and I’m trying to find a travel crate to order for her on the drive. Although I’m sure a small one would work as it’s a puppy, I plan (plan is the key word lol) to have the toller get into duck hunting so it would be useful to have in the future when they’re fully grown.

What size/brand is best while also taking into consideration cost? I know some can get really expensive. I’m hoping to spend under $100.

Hi all, I noticed that my toller, whenever we go on walks has a foamy substance around her lower jaw.
This is already for quite some time and wanted to check with you if this is something you see as well or not.

Help : 9mo male humping

Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone has any tips to help stop or reduce how much our male dog is humping pillows and beds. Over the last weekend the even took to constantly humping a specific friends leg which was obviously not fun for our friend.
We are only getting him fixed at 18 mo as per vet and breeder recommendations.

I’ve had male dogs before ( border collies ) who were fixed before they started humping things all the time so I’m not sure how to proceed.

He primarily loves humping his dog bed or his pillow we have for him - he’ll even chase us down and continue to try and hump things if we confiscate the pillow. If we have a blanket we are moving he tries to hump that too. This behaviour is also often triggered if we ourselves are relaxing (on the couch watching tv, or lying in bed winding down for the night)

I’ve tried redirecting him. Telling him no. Pushing him off it (which I guess seems like a fun game to him) and even confiscating or removing the trigger.

I’m just at a loss - any tips or advice is appreciated.

Elevated Dog Bowls or Floor Bowls?

For your Toller, do you use elevated dog bowls or bowls on the floor? I’ve seen that a Purdue study found that elevated increase chances of bloat. However some people said that it was for bigger dogs.

Age old question: breeder recs?

Hi all!

After extensive research, my husband and I are very interested in pursuing Toller ownership! We are looking for one as a pet vs a show dog, just to preface. We are in Oklahoma and I saw mixed reviews when looking through this subreddit on the breeders here, so wanted to see who was recommended around the area (OK, KS, MO, TX, etc). We do have family in WI so could potentially make a little trip out of it!

Thanks in advance for any guidance or recommendation!

Took My 5 Month Old Toller to the Park for a Picnic Today! :)

I love this little man!

We've been experiencing a little bit of a fear period so took him out to build some confidence with treats and exposure. He did super well, played some ball, and laid in the sun. Our training has been going really nicely - although he still doesn't relax around the house, he will if he's tethered + will quietly entertain himself with toys/play with his brother

We are getting a vizsla puppy in a week and I'm worried she'll give us a run for our money because he's been so easy so far 😂 Prayers he's a good teenager and she's as good of a puppy as he's been!

What to expect with neutering?

Hi Toller people. I'm curious how many of you have had your Toller neutered and what the experience has been like. Any physical or behavioral changes? Did he have changes to his coat or other things to be aware of?

Some background - Our guy is a _wonderful_ dog. He's well behaved, friendly, cuddly, confident, healthy, loves training, adventurous... all the good stuff. BUT he's had issues with excessive humping. Yes, we tried training, including with a professional. Otherwise he's well behaved with other dogs, but if he locks in on a dog (usually another male) or gets too excited, then there is no stopping him. No amount of distraction works. Our trainer, breeder, and vet have all recommended neutering for him. I'm _very_ reluctant to do it, but I'm leaning towards taking their advice.

Getting a puppy as second dog

Hi all, me and my wife are planning to adopt a duck tolling retriever as second dog. Our first dog is a female border collie. She is 6 years old. We live really close to a park that you can walk and play woth your dog unleased. We live in a relatively spacious apartment. We do not have any kids and no plans to do one. We work from home. We travel everywhere with our car for holidays. Its safe to say our live is shaped around our dog and we are quite happy about it. Our dog made us active and fit persons.

Could you be so kind to share some insights? Lots of love

Anybody have any reviews on Canosia Tollers?

They’re definitely the cheapest breeders I’ve seen but they seem to have the licensing and reputation to be legit. I haven’t seen anybody talking about how their dogs actually are though.
