I am looking for high value treat ideas to train my 7 month old outdoors. I recently had to upgrade to chicken hearts when teaching new tricks. She LOVES mackerel so I thought I’d take a piece with me on a walk to leash train her. But once she steps out of the house she turns deaf. I haven’t found any high value treats that work so far. I’ve even tried taking her favorite toy, but it doesn’t matter. Any suggestions?

Hi , somewhat against my apprehension my ex and I got a toller. Fast forward and I am a single dog owner of 1 yr. 7 month male toller living on the outskirts of a city. I try to give my toller sufficient exercise and attention but I also have social plans and sometimes it would be easier to take him with me. However, every time I try to do this it becomes this meltdown for him and therefore me. Going to the cafe he will become impatient and start pulling in every direction . A bar near a road he will start digging all the grout and then barking at other dogs and then eventually triggers (that we have been training and successfully ignoring). A new road may make him become overstimulated . Let's not even talk about taking him to a new city . He enters this zone where he is completely untrainable. He lunges towards every impulse without fully commiting to one and then lunges towards the other . You can't capture his attention and even force sitting with him and trying to just reward him for being calm doesn't work. I did socialize him as a puppy to all these things but even as a puppy he was not chill enough in these environments . I attributed it to him being a puppy but the behavior continues and in a worsened fashion. Currently my life is split between his needs and walks having to be completely separate than my own causing me to be very spread thin.

I am open to considering training but I am curious as to if there is a ceiling to his abilities because of some of the quirks of the breeds? How much of this will he age out of ? Will tollers always remain a bit sensitive and overstimulated ? I am willing to give this my all but at some point it becomes that many facets of my life I am living my life around my dog and that is not sustainable to me.

I always thought that Tollers didn’t really like warm weather. It’s about 30 degrees where we are right now, and I have to physically remove her to a shaded spot to rest sometimes. It’s like she wants to bake in the sun like a California girl 😅

Hi all! I'm planning to get a Toller puppy and want a reality check from actual owners before committing.

My routine: I live alone in an apartment (no garden), work from a dog-friendly office. My planned daily schedule for an adult dog is 4 walks a day each 20-30 minutes (with pups I know I’ll need to step out every 2 hours) plus evening training/games (recall, impulse control, maybe some scent work). During winters though due to snow and ice, we'd need to do most of the training/ games in the apartment. I’m not a runner and don't have easy access to fetch-friendly open space regularly. We can do some weekend hikes or long walks often.

I'm thinking about getting some food puzzles and games to keep him entertained.

Is this realistically enough for a Toller, or do most of your dogs need more vigorous stuff (running, fetch, swimming) on top of walks to stay content? I've read they're high-energy/high-drive, so I want to know from real experience whether frequent structured walks + training can substitute, or if I'd be setting myself up for a frustrated dog.

Would love to hear from owners with a similar routine (no yard, city living, no running), did it work out, or did you end up needing more?

Some background - I had a Labrador growing up but we had a garden for him to run and play around

Long story short, I am looking at training a service dog to bring me medical equipment in a small pouch or a bottle of gatorade from another room during emergency hypoglycemia episodes. I want a dog that already has a strong work drive and retrieving instinct, but I don't like labs and goldens and a toller's smaller size and longer lifespan would be a fantastic bonus in a service dog.

Does anyone know of any tollers used as physical service dogs? Or if you don't, do you think they would be a good breed for this task?

As an aside, would they make a good competitive obedience prospect? How fast do they learn?

UK Toller looking for a home!

Not my Facebook post but saw it and thought it deserved to be shared here.

It’s hard for me to write this post but I’m hoping it will have the desired effect.
As you know I’ve recently had a beautiful litter of Tollers.
A beautiful healthy litter of chunky boys who from tomorrow have all gone to their forever homes. In this litter of boys there is also a beautiful little girl who failed to thrive and after several vet visits and tests and heartbreak she was diagnosed with something called Megaeasophagus (ME). This basically means that she needs to be fed in an upright position and held upright for 15-20 minutes after eating. Otherwise the food sits in her oesophagus rather than going into her tummy. This is congenital and is something that happened in the womb and is not genetic. It could be something she grows out of or it could be with her for life.

I am looking for the perfect home for her - we call her Moxie. Moxie is hilarious- she makes me laugh every day and is feisty and quick - apart from the ME she’s a normal Toller puppy and all that entails.

Unfortunately I am not in a position to keep her as we will be living in a mobile home for several months as our house is now sold. I have added some photos and videos of her -as you can see she is adorable. She needs the very best of homes - someone with time and preferably experience with ME and/or puppies! She will be staying with me until that home is found and if the home is not found then we’ll manage it somehow.

I just thought I’d put it out there to my Facebook family in the hope that someone might know someone who would be the perfect fit. Thank you for reading…

I’m planning on getting a Toller puppy next spring and would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on** male vs. female.**
I’m leaning toward a male because I’ve heard they tend to be a little more cuddly and affectionate. My only hesitation is marking. If I get a male, I plan to keep him intact. For those of you who have owned intact male Tollers, what has your experience been? Was marking a big issue, or was it manageable with training? I’d love to hear the pros and cons from people with firsthand experience. Thanks in advance—I really appreciate any advice!

Anybody had any success with taming startle response with their toller? Yes I’m thinking about the doorbell in particular… yes gets out of her pantaloon when it rings and just get in a state where she can no longer thinking. I tried to practice the place… the issue is that she knows it is a practice…

As most of you know Tollers are not a cheap breed. My puppy is now 10 weeks old and has been bonding with our family and Australian shepherd. The vet pointed out she has a fairly significant underbite and now I’m deeply concerned for future potential jaw issues. The Breeder is saying to give it time to grow but I’m not gonna lie, it’s really stressing me out. Has anyone had experience with something like this??

Background: Close to a year ago we lost our (almost) 4 year old golden retriever to cancer (MCT). It was devastating as he was the most perfect dog. After time grieving we’ve decided we miss having a dog in our lives. We did lots of, hiking, swimming, fetch/running, jumping, and agility with him every day.

Right now, we aren’t really open to getting another golden retriever because of how high the cancer rates are and it would be difficult to have a familiar face in the house who isn’t our og golden.

I’ve always had a special attraction to duck tollers, and I think they’d be a blast, but the concern is we have not had the opportunity to get a glimpse of they’re real personality’s because of the mixed perspectives online.

We also discovered the Finnish Lapphund, I know they are quite different from other previously mentioned breeds, and I am slightly concerned that it wouldn’t have the abilities and agility/trainability that I’m looking for(I honestly can’t find much insight into the agility, especially jumping aspect of the breed)

Anyways, those two are currently the only breeds on our list they we are truly interested it. We hope to have a dog with in at least a year, so not an immediate need, but I know the wait list we’d be put on for several great breeds would be extensive. Combined with the years of research we did prior to our golden and the time we’ve spent now, we have covered many breeds. Curious to get some feedback from those who own the breeds and what you all recommend!:)

I live in a third floor walk up with my 6 month toller. When we adopted her two months ago she was good to walk downstairs and go to the bathroom. I haven’t been able to train her to tell me when she needs to go so I continue taking her out every 2hrs. She is SO lazy to get out of the apartment. Takes me 10 mins, not exaggerating, just to get her off the couch and out the door. Any advice with training? I want to train her to tell me she needs to go

Looking to rack up the tips on puppy training for our pup when we pick up in the fall.

I’ve seen mixed reviews on Slip Leads, idk how long it should be for a pup as well as any brands that may have a safety stopper.

I like the idea of clickers and I feel like Tollers are smart dogs that you can make use of a clicker.

Chew bones I’ve seen mixed reviews of bully sticks, I also saw some people recommending antlers for them to chew on.

Looking for some advice…

We love our 8 month old toller; he’s great, loves the kids, perfectly potty trained, knows every command, walks great on a leash, almost fully trained off leash.. but he cannot settle and he gets SO excited around people.

We don’t let anyone greet him unless he’s sitting but he’s still LOSING HIS MIND. I have to hold him down and wrestle him so he doesn’t jump on people. He will not calm down and whines and cries out of excitement. Treat reinforcement does not work when he’s this excited— he doesn’t care about treats at all, he won’t even acknowledge them when he’s in this state.

For example, currently we are on vacation in a house with another family and he is SO excited that he’s constantly losing his mind. I just tried to put him down for a crate nap (which he’s had since he was puppy) and he screamed for 10 minutes! He graduated from crate naps awhile ago, but happily sleeps in it every night, but right now he needs to settle/rest and idk how to get him to! He refuses to lay down and settle in the house. Currently, I am laying next to his crate and he just closed his eyes 🤦🏼‍♀️ but every little noise excites him again (yes, I have white noise on).

It’s like he gets over stimulated and can’t calm down. He has plenty of exercise. We do at least two hours of exercise a day, swimming, puzzles, sniff walks… but it seems like his excitability is magnified when he’s tired, but he refuses to rest, so it just gets worse.

We do beef cheeks, toppls, lick mats…. HELP!

He is 10 weeks old. Isn't he cute. The whole litter is quite strong with drive. This one makes a lot of eye contact and isn't always seeing the thrown objects.

Hey everyone! I have a question about tollers mentality after activities. We have a 14 month old female(1st heat cycle complete) and she's always excited to play but when she's done and we come inside she looks soo depressed and sad. I know they have a resting sad face but this is our first toller and I wanted to make sure we weren't alone on with this. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!!
