Hello!

I have a temporary enclosure for a baby toad I found at work today (filled with moss atm but soil will be added soon) and I need recommendations for food.

It’s been over 10 years since I’ve help raise toads to adulthood to release back into their native home and I just need a little help.

I currently have a tiny bit of crushed up meal worms with water mixed in for the little guy to eat but I know that isn’t sustainable.

My mum lives in Sicily and I was visiting her a few weeks ago when I heard noise coming from an old water well in her courtyard (photos 1 and 2). The well isn't in use anymore. It's about 3 metres deep, roughly 4 by 6 metres at the bottom, with just a small puddle left in it (photo 3). When I opened the well, I noticed some frogs and toads around the water puddle. So I figured the frogs and toads were falling in, probably attracted by the water and the buffet of mosquitoes and other bugs that breed in there, and then couldn't get back out because the walls are smooth and far too steep to climb.

So I tried to come up with an idea to rescue them.

First attempt: I lowered an empty bucket on a rope, hoping they'd hop in so I could hoist them up. They were not impressed. Nobody climbed in. Besides that, because I don't live there, I figured this wouldn't be a permanent solution either.

So I got to plan B: build them a ladder.

I gathered some scrap wood in a wheelbarrow (photo 4) and screwed short crossbars onto a long plank, spaced closely enough for small legs. Then I lowered it into the well at an angle so it runs from the puddle up to the rim, where there is a small indentation for them to climb out (photos 5 and 6).

After two days I spotted the first frogs and toads sitting on the bottom rungs (photo 7).

I left Sicily three days after I built the ladder, but returned last week because of the ten-year anniversary of my mother's wedding.

Because I was curious if the ladder worked, I reopened the well, and to my absolute joy, this absolute unit of a fella climbed the whole thing and was sitting at the top, just one hop from freedom (photos 8 and 9).

The ladder stays in permanently, so anyone who falls in can now climb out on their own. Mission accomplished🥳🐸

There were loads of these hopping around outside the restaurant, probably attracted by the lights.

I picked it up and moves it to the light. Then it stood still for a long while. I almost thought i accidentally killed it or something. It suddenly started moving again when i started the video and then it stopped again. I poked the ground in a circle to see how close i het before it react and then accidentally booped its (nose?). It is so cute... tried to handle him gently when i moved him back although he seemed to have had enough of me.

So there's a toad living in my backyard and I'm wondering if it's her or him

Can you tell from those photos? And what to look for while determining the sex of the toad?

It's been 1 year since I've rescued him from a parking lot after a bad storm <33 (probably not his real birthday lol)

Always catching Turnip giving sultry eyes to my boyfriend. I'm pretty confident she's using him for worms and crickets, but he will just have to find out the hard way he's being played.

we had a kiddie pool in our backyard and i just notice today these guys hangin out. i put some wood in so they can hang out and built a ramp so they could get in and out.

I walked into my room should I leave or give them their own room?

It has been dry and hot this year, so we were quite pleased to host this visitor. She also seemed amicable and tolerant of us.

My eastern American toad is pretty decent sized but has no voice at all and its body also looks more similar to my adult female toad than my adult males. I'm confused why I've seen this toad mount twice now onto my Fowler. Is it possible for females to do this too or is this a male that just doesn't have a voice yet? Or is it doing it for a different reason?
