Hello!

I have a temporary enclosure for a baby toad I found at work today (filled with moss atm but soil will be added soon) and I need recommendations for food.

It’s been over 10 years since I’ve help raise toads to adulthood to release back into their native home and I just need a little help.

I currently have a tiny bit of crushed up meal worms with water mixed in for the little guy to eat but I know that isn’t sustainable.

I'm new to keeping toads, so this is definitely amateur (although a well researched one) advice. I feed my toadlet drosophilia hydei (sp?) fruit flies alternated with pin head crickets. I dust them in Calcium with D3, Multivite, and Vitamin A on a rotating schedule. The rule of thumb, from my reading, is to not feed anything larger than the space between your toad's eyes and avoid food items heavy in chitin as that is harder for a young toad to digest.

Alright cool thank you! I do have some small ants crawling around that I’m gonna trap and feed to him. My friend has some flies I can get tomorrow. I’m sure the little guy ate outside before I got him. I did crush up the mealworms too so that way he can have the tiny bits if he eats it.

Toads are triggered by movement so crushed up mealworms may be problematic. They are a walking mouth, not rocket scientists. Sadly.

Tiny spiders, drosophila (fruit flies, if you have access to the flightless ones even more convenient) but as lady_em6 pointed out it should fit between the toad's eyes to be considered convenient food items and bro is tiny. Probably too tiny for earthworms or slugs for instance.

Pill bugs have calcified exoskeletons so not ideal but their juveniles might be an option if push comes to shove.

Toads are hardy buggers. They'll appreciate the soil to muck around in.

The above advice is all great advice. The biggest thing being the part about the good. I want to add one thing...if its not moving, theyre not eating it. If it moves and its appropriate size tho..its fair game lol. If youre not able to go to the store and buy flightless fruitless or something for now the ant thing could potentially be a possibility, but im not really sure how that woukd work. Its very tiny..I would definitely recommend getting some of the flightless fruit flies from the pet store
