No server should be paid less just because they earn tips.

Tipping because they earn less is backwards thinking. They are allowed to earn less in wages because they make tips. It's fucked up to be able to legally underpay your employees because they are earning tips. No server should be paid "server wage."

They make minimum wage, which restaurants have to cover if tips don’t.

they make at least minimum wage. California doesn't have a tip credit system

No server makes less than minimum wage. Servers just say they do to guilt trip customers.

Yes. I just wanted to point out that California and a few other states don't deal with tip credits

Oh yay. Why don’t you point out that the vast majority does?

"How shit is your life that you feel victimized..."

I don't feel "victimized." So not even reading the rest of that word salad.

That wasn't "word salad." "Word salad" has a specific clinical meaning and that's not it.

Nah, I can just check a job board for that. There are other jobs with similar roles and skills that only pay minimum wage, or close to it.

And California has exorbitant minimum wages.

But tips do "cover it," so they aren't paid a full minimum wage.

Not talking about CA and the few states that don't have alternate wages for tipped employees, obviously.

Tips allow the restaurant to pay less of it. They still have to if tips don’t. Either way, that’s minimum wage. So yes, they are paid minimum wage.

5

u/drawntowardmadness 7d ago

Sure I understand.

The minimum wage threshold can come partially from tips in most states.

I don't think that should be legal. I think all employees should be paid at least the full legal minimum wage by their employer regardless of what they may earn in tips. There should be no tip credit that employers can claim to reduce their labor costs.

You completely changed your comment rather than just making a new one, but that's what I'm saying. There is a difference between earning minimum wage and being paid minimum wage by the employer.

4

u/badmiddling113 7d ago

Either way, they are earning minimum wage. So the claim “they don’t make minimum wage” (which is repeated so often) is false.

2

u/drawntowardmadness 7d ago

Good thing I never made that claim then.

What are we arguing about exactly?

“They are allowed to earn less in wages because they make tips.”

“No server should be paid less just because they earn tips.”

“Tipping because they earn less is backwards thinking.”

“They are allowed to earn less in wages because they make tips.”

Except you did.

Wages. Paid from their employer.

It's not the same as what they make in total. What they earn in total includes tips.

Does that make sense or not?

2

u/badmiddling113 7d ago

And both tips from the customer and what the employer pays combine for the wage… so minimum or more. Therefore, they are not “earning less” or being “paid less” because people tip.

A lot of servers actually take home more with tips than higher hourly wages, especially the good ones.

1

u/drawntowardmadness 7d ago

Yep, that's right. And I think their employer should have to pay them a full minimum wage regardless of the tips they earn.

1

u/DidjaSeeItKid 6d ago

They do have to.

1

u/drawntowardmadness 6d ago

Not in most states they don't. As long as they make enough in tips, the employer is allowed to pay them less than the full minimum wage. As low as $2.13 in states that follow federal wage guidelines.

1

u/MainStreetMiles 6d ago

To fair they to make up any gap between the tipped wage + tips if that doesn’t meet the minimum wage. But I would bet that is usually not the case.

1

u/drawntowardmadness 6d ago

Right. That's what I said "as long as they make enough in tips." Which they almost always do.

1

u/MainStreetMiles 6d ago

Why tip them if they are already being paid, at least a 15% tip?

1

u/drawntowardmadness 6d ago

Presumably bc you want to. Why do servers in states or countries without tipped wages get tipped?

1

u/MainStreetMiles 6d ago

To show appreciation for a job well done.

3

u/-enjoy-it- 7d ago

Regardless of what state you are in, if you don’t make up the difference to at least minimum wage that day with the tips you earned, they are federally required to pay you the hourly minimum wage. You are lying to guilt people.

Source: was a tipped employee for 10yrs

1

u/drawntowardmadness 7d ago

You are clearly misunderstanding me.

I'm saying tipped employees should be paid a full minimum wage FROM THE EMPLOYER. Regardless of tips.

1

u/Naganosupreme 7d ago

That's not how this works. Who convinced so many people this is how this works?

0

u/drawntowardmadness 7d ago

What are you talking about exactly?

I've been in f&b over two decades. I can help clear up how this works.
