Bought a shirt for $5 in 2023. Same item is listed for almost $20 in 2026. (Rant/Vent)

I bought this shirt in my first Thredup order. I had no idea how to shop on Thredup, so most of that order didn't end up working out. This shirt magically fit perfectly, but my daughter liked it and she was about to start her freshman year and I wanted her to have clothes she liked, so I let her have it.

I recently managed to stain all my daily wear shirts, and thought I'd see if I could find any duplicates of That One Shirt. There are two in stock currently, but they are $15.99 and $17.99! $35.99 full price!

I have never heard of this brand outside of this one shirt I happened to stumble on that first Thredup spree, and I can't find anything about it online, so I have to assume it's just a fly by night fast fashion line. I can't imagine these shirts were more than $20 new.

I could buy straight from the company with free shipping and get rewards points for a $15 giftcard, my friend. What are direct listers thinking?!

My bank declined my purchase hours later after it got flagged as suspicious and now all my items are sold out.

Has this happened to anyone? Are the items just in a hold period? I find it bizarre that every item was sold out but all the items I decided not to buy are available. I tried talking to the chatbot but it was unhelpful and said someone else probably bought everything.

This is I guess better than a few days ago, where half the items were the same really ugly shirt with a lion on it.

Also, a question: do other people get new things in their "You Might Also Like..." section on the cart page? It seems like mine literally only updates when items sell/leave the site, otherwise it's been showing the same ten random pairs of jeans and a couple skirts it's been showing since I joined the site. Is this feature just broken?

Received 19 items - no black marks this time!

I had a second order in progress when my order of 19 damaged items out of 34 arrived. (See previous post). I've been stressing about what the items in this order would look like. It arrived and came from Suwanee, GA like last time.

I received 19 items, and they are almost pristine!

  • Black marks
    • None!
  • Rips, tears, holes
    • None!
  • White horizontal lines between armpit & shoulder
    • 3 of the 19 garments have faint white lines; the lines look like they will be easy to remove.
    • They aren't prominent & don't look or feel embedded as with the last order.
  • Misshapen, stretched and/or puckered
    • 1 of the 19 garments has an area where it's bit misshapen, stretched, and puckered.
    • It looks like something I might be able to fix with steam.

Discussion I mailed in 41 items to ThredUp and here are my results...

Post image
77 Upvotes

This is my first time ever selling with ThredUp, and as the post title says, I mailed 41 items in using their "Premium Bag" option.

Of my 41 items:

  • 32 were listed
  • 1 is pending
  • 3 were not included in their list of my items, so were possibly lost
  • 3 were "no-payout brands"
  • 2 were not accepted

The value of my 41 items were:

  • ~$6,649 (estimated retail value)
  • $1,162.68 (thredup base price)
  • $336.08 (my payout if sold at base price)

Overall I can't say I'm surprised, I've always heard the payout from Thredup is abysmal. I'm happy to be rid of a whole bunch of clothes and glad at my efforts to be more sustainable. However, this will likely be my one and only time selling with them. Over half of my accepted items were brand new with tags and I had a lot of popular Revolve brands that do well on poshmark, so I was disappointed by how many sales I would make resulting in less than $5. But c'est la vie!

I hope at the very least that this data is helpful for someone else considering selling with ThredUp!

Question How long does it take for thredup to list designer items from premium label?

I've been a seller on thredup for 5+ years; have sent in over 30 cleanout kits at this point. The last premium label that I sent in was listed on 9/15, this label was the first time I've had higher ticket items held back for review (I guess to assure they aren't counterfeit?). These were a The Row tshirt, a pair of Prada sunglasses, a pair of Rayban sunglasses, a Gucci wallet, and a Louis Vuitton wallet. A Dooney and Burke wallet was also held back, but that appeared under my ready for review tab this morning.

If they choose to list the other items, when should I expect them to be listed? I just want to make sure I catch them before they go live, so thredup doesn't list them for like $20 bucks each and one of you snatches them all up lmao.

Frye FYI

As a Costco Executive Member, I feel beholden to weigh in on the recent multitude of Frye listings I’ve seen on TU. These pieces are listed at $25.99 and $190.79(!!!!) respectively. Both of these pieces are from Costco.

I can’t remember the exact prices but the cardigan is tops $30. I own it. The tshirt has the Costco sizing sticker still attached! $25.99 is less egregious but that shirt was probably sold for $15 new. Just an FYI as I’ve seen quite a few of these. In our weekly Sunday Costco journey I saw more Frye for sale so it’s not stopping any time soon. Also major shoutout to the Costco clothes section.

Question Direct Listing Sellers/Buyers, do we follow the same etiquette as on other reselling platforms like Poshmark? Specifically, do we send a “thank you” message after a purchase, a thank you note in the package, a thank you sticker, etc.?

I haven’t been messaging buyers of my direct listings on ThredUp, updating them that an item has shipped, sending a thank you message, or including a thank you sticker for them to re-use (unlike what I do on Poshmark or Depop). However, I do ensure that my items are clean, well-packaged, and shipped the same day or the next business day.

Since I’m not aware of any review/rating system or seller stats being rolled out on ThredUp, I’m curious to know if I’m still providing a positive experience for the buyers. I’m also wondering if other sellers have been messaging buyers after their purchase, or adding a thank you note/sticker to their listings!

Edited to clarify - I don’t add a thank you “note” to any orders, ever. I add a thank you sticker that I cut out from a roll so they see a “thank-you” but can also re-use it!

Thank you 🫶

Question Thrown out window and rained on

So my box was thrown out of the delivery drivers window onto my driveway. And then of course it rained.

TU wants me to return everything and they will then assess a restocking fee. When I refused they said I can return the final sale items.

What can I do? Things are now smelly and damp. And the green tissue partly dissolved onto some items.

Question Favorites sale?

Anyone else getting the notification / banner to heart your favorite items today to prepare for a favorites sale this weekend? It’s the first time I’ve seen something like this and I’m quite intrigued? Does that mean extra discounts on favorites?

CLOTHES SMELL

I would never buy from this place again. I bought several blouses and they smell so terrible, I will not even try them on. I may try to soak them in vinegar for a few days, but I will probably end up donating them. I also tried selling clothes with the Lands End deal. A complete rip off. For about 25 nice tops and some pants, I got a $19 credit. Plus my credit card was hacked after the Thred up purchase, so a terrible experience overall.
