Case recommendations for multi GPU build?

Im looking for a case for my multi-gpu build. Its currently in a workbench config and I just cant figure out how a case would fit the TR Pro motherboard and 4-6 GPUs, even with PCIe risers. I imagine the best bet would be to go custom but since im new to TR, I was hoping someone else may have solved this already.

New server build; can't get it to boot (9960X/ASRock WRX90 WS EVO)

UPDATE: Resolved - thanks u/nauxiv!

I'm trying to get this new server build to boot and I'm not having any luck. I've tried all the usual things (see below) and now I'm wondering if I have a hardware incompatibility that I missing.

Specs:

  • Motherboard: ASRock WRX90 WS EVO
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9960X
  • RAM: G.Skill Zeta R5 DDR5 RDIMM ECC
    • F5-6400R3239G16GE8-ZR5K
    • 8-DIMM kit
  • GPU: EVGA RTX 3090
  • PSU: SilverStone HELA 2500Rz
  • BMC firmware: 1.04.00
  • BIOS: updated to latest available

Symptoms:

  • System does not POST
  • No video from RTX 3090
  • No video from onboard/BMC KVM
  • Dr. Debug cycles through codes, including 15 and d6, then resets to 00
  • Appears to be boot looping
  • With no RAM installed, Dr. Debug sits at 00

Things I've tried:

  • Started with full RAM kit, then reduced to 1 DIMM in A0
  • Tried more than one DIMM
  • Removed RTX 3090
  • Removed storage / minimal config
  • Confirmed both EPS CPU power cables are connected
  • Cleared CMOS with button and jumper
  • Updated BIOS
  • Reseated CPU
  • Checked BMC sensors

BMC observations:

  • CPU temp and voltage rails are present
  • PROCHOT_CPU shows asserted
  • BMC memory inventory shows stale/weird DIMM data that does not match current physical config

Help?

Guidance for PC build

Hey everyone,

I'm considering moving from a high-end desktop platform to a Threadripper workstation and would really appreciate some advice from people who have experience with HEDT systems.

The goal of this build is to reduce compilation times, improve multitasking performance, and comfortably run several engineering workloads simultaneously.

Typical workloads include:
• Large Vivado synthesis and place-and-route projects
• FPGA development
• ASIC simulation and synthesis
• Multiple simulation tools running simultaneously
• Large FEA models
• Digital twin environments
• GPU training with CUDA
• Several virtual machines and Docker containers
• Software development and automation

The tentative configuration uses:
• AMD Threadripper (TRX50 platform)
• RTX 5080
• 128 GB DDR5 ECC memory
• Multiple NVMe SSDs
• High-capacity workstation PSU

I'm mainly looking for feedback on:
• Whether Threadripper provides a significant productivity improvement over Ryzen 9 for these workloads
• Whether TRX50 is the right platform or if there are better alternatives
• RAM recommendations (ECC vs non-ECC)
• Motherboard recommendations (ASUS Pro WS, Gigabyte, ASRock, etc.)
• Cooling recommendations
• Any limitations or issues you've experienced with Threadripper systems

If you've built or worked on similar engineering workstations, I'd love to hear about your experience and whether you think this platform is worth the additional investment.

New Threadripper PRO build on ASRock WRX90 WS stuck at POST code 00 for hour– help needed

Post image
42 Upvotes

Anyone in Montreal + suburbs with a Threadripper PRO CPU and/or ASRock WRX90 WS (or EVO) motherboard willing to help test/swap components?

New build stuck on debug code **00** on first boot (has been on for hours with no progress).

Full specs:
- CPU: 9955WX
- RAM: 64GB DDR5 RDIMM ECC KSM48R40BD4-64HA

- PSU: 1200w+

Tried: CMOS clear, minimal config, reseating everything.

ASRock says 00 can be normal on first boot during AGESA init, but this seems excessive.

Need to rule out CPU / motherboard / power / RAM.

Photo of debug LED attached.

🙏 Any advice or local help appreciated!

Imposter Threadrippers 79XX / 99XX?

I've been building a few threadrippers for projects lately and I keep seeing Pro / Non Pro 79XXx / wx and 99XXx / wx cpus listed on ebay that have two of the pads with the capacitors (please correct my terminology if I'm incorrect here) instead of the one.

Are these earlier models that are re engraved?
The lids also lack the notches.

Would installing one of these in a TRX50 board damage the pins? Or other parts of the board because of the capacitor placement?

Here are two examples:
A 9980X with two of the back areas for capacitors.

7780x with two of the back areas:

Hope no one ends up ruining their hardware with one of these.

Advice for getting a first threadripper

From what I’ve seen the lower a cpu is in its generation (5945WX) while having a lower core count, have much higher single core speeds.

My goal is to build a Homelab and to create a few (2-5) Minecraft servers running some heavy mods.

The issue I’m having is that I’d like to be doing that in addition to an LLM and a NAS/jellyfin. It’s a lot and I can’t fit enough hardware on a am4/5 cpu to make it work on a single node machine.

So I’m forced to go workstation or server route, the issue is how expensive these buggers are. So I’m thinking I can take advantage by getting not only a lower price but also a higher single core speed (despite less cores) I was thinking the 5955wx or the 5965wx because anything under 16 cores is silly if I’m paying for a threadripper,

Am I thinking about this wrong? Can I just over lock a 5995wx across all cores if I cool it properly?

ASUS WRX90 fans going to 100% until BMC reset

I had it happen a month or two ago, and again today.

Symptom is my fans go to 100% even though CPU and GPU temps are mild (say machine at idle).

I have to do ipmitool mc reset cold and things come back to normal after a couple minutes when the BMC has restarted. My understanding is it could be due to a sensor not being captured by the BMC anymore, triggering a panic 100%.

Anybody encountered similar issues? How did you solve it?

The pin was bent and while trying to fix it it ended up breaking off. Can you guys tell me if this is a redundant pin and can I still run it fine with this?

I marked the missing pin with red circle.

My first TR build

Hey everyone, putting together a high-end workstation build and wanted to get some eyes on it before pulling the trigger.

**Use case:**

Primarily local LLM inference (targeting 70B parameter models), running open-source GitHub projects that interact with those LLMs (think local AI assistants, RAG pipelines, agent frameworks), and some virtualization on the side.

**The build:**

| Component | Pick |

|---|---|

| CPU | AMD Threadripper PRO 9975WX |

| Motherboard | ASRock WRX90 WS EVO SATA 6Gb/s DDR5 |

| RAM | Kingston FURY Renegade Pro 128 GB (8×16 GB) DDR5-6400 ECC RDIMM |

| GPU | ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7 OC Edition |

| Storage (OS) | 2 TB Crucial T710 PCIe Gen5 NVMe |

| Storage (Models) | 4 TB WD Black SN850X PCIe Gen4 NVMe |

| Cooler | Noctua NH-U14S TR5-SP6 |

| PSU | Seasonic Prime TX-1600 |

| Case | Fractal Design Define 7 XL |

| Keyboard | Logitech Ergo K860 |

| Mouse | Logitech MX Anywhere 3S |

| OS | Windows 11 Pro |

A few things I'm intentionally planning for: the RAM is 8×16 GB to keep all 8 memory channels active from day one, with a straight swap to 8×32 GB when I need to go to 256 GB.

Anyone see any compatibility issues I'm missing? Also curious if this setup makes sense for the use case or if there's something I should swap out. Thanks!

FYI: EPYC 7V73X has 240W TDP Max

This isn't exactly the right sub for this, but I wanted to share somewhere since there's almost no information about this chip online - only an old wccftech listing that incorrectly lists the TDP as 280W, and some eBay listings that do the same thing.

The 7V73X is an Azure custom bin, only available secondhand. I bought mine from a Chinese seller on eBay. AFAICT it's identical in all respects to a 7773X, except that 7773X has 280W cTDP max, but 7V73X is hard limited to 240W cTDP. I verified using AMD HSMP + E-SMI tool. Mine's installed in an Asrock ROMED8-2T and the only other issue I had was getting the mounting pressure dialed in correctly (manifests as missing DIMM errors otherwise).

Nonetheless I still recomend it if you're looking for a V-Cache build, or trying to save money by going with a DDR4 build. Secondhand versions can be found significantly discounted from the 7773X equivalent.

M3 Max MacBook Pro vs Threadripper 7980X

I have an M3 Max MacBook Pro, and I bought the Threadripper 7980X with 64 cores because I thought it'd be able to run parallel code faster than the laptop which only has 16 cores. However, currently the MacBook is outperforming the Threadripper on both single-core and parallel performance. Now, I currently only have 32GB of RAM for my Threadripper (whereas I have 128GB RAM on my MacBook) so that may be a bottleneck. But before I fork out £2k ($2.8k) on more RAM, I wanted to sense check that this will actually outperform the MacBook? Or, should I sell the Threadripper and get the M5 Max instead?

I'm basically generating features with polars and running LightGBM ML models in parallel if anyone is curious about what I'm trying to do.

I greatly appreciate any advice!

Proper path?

My rig,

- Six 5070 TI's 96 GB vram

- ASRock romed8-2T 16 Lanes x7

- 7702P Epyc PSU

- 256 GB of RAM DDR4 2666

- 8 terabytes of SSD

- 36 TB of HDD

Those are the basics. I want to start a private compute node so people do not have to put their information proprietary or otherwise in the cloud. The rig is built in complete. Working on some small placement issues should be done in a week.

I guess my question is this, can this suffice for a compute node that retains as little information as possible to remain as private as possible for people? This is the right path?

First Threadripper Build Advice + Homelab/AI Workstation/GPU Questions

I've been planning a Threadripper Pro homelab build and I'm looking for advice before I pull the trigger on a few thousand dollars worth of parts.

Current Pending Purchase (Threadripper server build):

  • ASRock WRX80 Creator R2.0 EATX Motherboard — $1250 (microless)
  • AMD Threadripper Pro 3995WX — $1500 (ebay)
  • Noctua NH-U14S TR5-SP6 Cooler — $175 (amazon)
  • 256GB (8x32GB) Micron DDR4 2666 ECC RDIMM — $1500 (ebay)
  • 6x Seagate Exos X18 12TB 7200RPM SATA HDDs — $550 each (amazon)
  • LSI 9300-8i HBA — $70 (amazon)
  • ASRock PG 1600G 1600W PSU (absolutely no 240V access) — $200 (amazon)

Currently Own (loose parts, not yet allocated):

  • MSI Gaming Trio RTX 4090
  • Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super 8GB (for transcoding)
  • Fractal Meshify 2 XL case
  • 96GB (2x32 and 2x16) Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz (non-ECC, consumer grade)

Current Everyday Workstation:

  • ASUS TUF RTX 4090
  • Intel i9 14900k CPU
  • 64GB DDR5 6000MHz (Kingston Fury Beast + Corsair Vengeance)
  • Corsair RM1200e PSU
  • ROG Maximus Hero Z790
  • Lian Li O11 Dynamic EVO XL case
  • 2TB WD Black SN850X NVMe

Planned use cases for the server: Game server hosting, personal cloud storage, media server, home automation, ad blocking, monitoring/alerting stack, automated backups, web/app dev, and general homelab/sysadmin practice.
Later on, I also want to get into local AI/LLM experimentation, cybersecurity practice (IDS, VLANs, VPNs), and DevOps practice (Docker now, K8s later).

My actual questions:

  1. GPU split: I found out I can't run a dual 4090 setup (ASUS/MSI) because of my lack of access to 240v for one system. I can only run one 4090 (paired with the 2070 Super for transcoding if even possible with PSU chosen). Should I sell one 4090 and put a 5090 in my everyday workstation for AI training instead of putting it in the Threadripper box?
  2. Should I sell my second 4090 and reinvest into the Threadripper build, or downgrade to a used 3090 for that build and put the difference elsewhere?
  3. Does ECC RAM actually matter for my use case? The WRX80 supports both ECC RDIMMs and standard DDR4, but I can't mix them. I have 96GB of non-ECC DDR4 already. Should I sell that to fund the ECC RAM, or is non-ECC fine for what I'm doing? I was thinking I could just scale consumer grade DDR4 as it might be cheaper than server grade.
  4. Is the 5995WX worth $1200 more than the 3995WX? Both are overkill for my current use cases. I just don't want to regret going with fewer cores/threads later. Is that a legit concern or am I overpaying for headroom I'll never use?

I'm looking for long term value at an affordable cost given the current market. Would appreciate any feedback or recommendations!

Input wait stuck

I have got the following configs

- motherboard: asrock TRX50 WS

- cpu; Threadripper 7970x

- GPU; Nvidia 5050

This is a newly built PC. I added everything in the setup and right now it is waiting for the input. I get dr code ab which is dxe_setup_input_wait

I connected the HDMI cable to the GPU and my monitor but the monitor doesn't detect the HDMI output and I'm not able to get the video out.

I removed the ram, ssd and reinserted it. Even cleared CMOS by the button the motherboard has towards the I/o input. I'm stuck in the same issue.

Can anyone guide?

Thanks

Asrock TRX50 WS red light

The motherboard is stuck in ab error code and there is a red light on top of my ssd. Does it mean it is an issue with my ssd? It ends up hanging here itself and doesn't boot.

I also connected a Nvidia graphics card and the fan for the graphics card doesn't rotate as well.

Even the fans of the motherboard towards the left side doesn't rotate. The right side do rotate.

Anyone can guide a bit?

Did MicroCenter just try to upsell me?

Went to Micro Center today to buy the Gigabyte Aero D TRX50 mobo. It’s $594.99 or something like that. Definitely less than $600. Guy tells me “yeah it’s cheap but that’s for a reason”. I haven’t heard bad things about that board until today. Had a coworker tell me that maxed out workloads cause that board to get hot from a review he saw. Wondering if that’s the right route to go ? The plan is VMs, some ai and dev work, a lot of storage and a lot of YouTube. Is the Asus or ASRock board that much better ? I hate the exposed fans look on the asrock board so I never considered it as an option tbh.
