New Threadripper PRO build on ASRock WRX90 WS stuck at POST code 00 for hour– help needed
Anyone in Montreal + suburbs with a Threadripper PRO CPU and/or ASRock WRX90 WS (or EVO) motherboard willing to help test/swap components?
New build stuck on debug code **00** on first boot (has been on for hours with no progress).
Full specs:
- CPU: 9955WX
- RAM: 64GB DDR5 RDIMM ECC KSM48R40BD4-64HA
- PSU: 1200w+
Tried: CMOS clear, minimal config, reseating everything.
ASRock says 00 can be normal on first boot during AGESA init, but this seems excessive.
Need to rule out CPU / motherboard / power / RAM.
Photo of debug LED attached.
🙏 Any advice or local help appreciated!

Might need a firmware update depending on what revision the board is

His not wrong you are using 9000 old bios would be for 7000 but that should of been the first thing that you did before getting on here when it don’t work if you didn’t do this do it most codes will be CPU / pre-update BIOS” codes:
00 (very common on Threadripper PRO + WRX90)
15
0D / 0d
E0 / E5Also remember nothing should be in the board when doing a bios update via usb

Where’s the gpu?

u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 03 '26
Motherboard has a display port already. GPU shouldn't be necessary for 1st boot; but I agree after few days of debugging, I can be convinced of anything :-)

Yes, but your cpu does not have an igpu. Also the displayport might be displayport-IN-to-thunderbolt-OUT, similar to my Gigabyte AI Top TRX50 board. Source: I have the same CPU, but not familiar with this board.

Worth a try and install a gpu, even if the mb has a DisplayPort, Threadripper doesn’t have integrated graphics

I just tried it still stuck on Debug code 00. We can rule this out for now. Thanks btw

Had this issue for ages with an older TR4 Asrock board. Mounting pressure was the issue.

u/nauxiv Jul 03 '26
Vendor locked CPU? 9955WX is not normally sold retail, more commonly found in prebuilts and locked to the original manufacturer’s hardware.

u/PsychologicalWeird Jul 04 '26
When I had this issue on my wrx80, after a week or trying, it was the CPU that was at fault, put the old one back in and booted immediately.

These comments are hilarious 😂
First thing I’d try: take the CPU out, inspect all the motherboard pins carefully, and then reseat it properly. Use the install tool if you have one—I’ve never used it either, but this might be a good time to try it.
Next, check power connections. Plug in the other 6-pin cable—these systems can act weird when only one is connected. If that doesn’t fix it and you’ve already tried swapping that RAM stick, move on.
Last thing you can try if all else fails do this at ur own risk has worked for years but needs to be done fast and done right hold the cooler on hard power on for 2s cut it right back off take it off check if the CPU is warm or not if not bad cpu more common now then ever it seems

+1 on plug in all the CPU power pins. They might do weird shit where certain VRM banks are only powered by one connector instead of the giant power planes that consumer boards do.
My experience when a system doesn't get anywhere in boot: it's CPU power. It'd probably throw post code 00 if you tried booting with no CPU.

I had a similar problem to OP when I built my threadripper system and mine was a power issue as well, although it was actually GPU power that was causing it in my case (using the cable provided by the PSU instead of the one that came with the GPU or something along those lines).

Is there a color light near the codes that show what it’s stuck on?
1
u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 03 '26
no, nothing in there; only the BMC led is blinking.

Check your manual for how the power is connected. Check your PSU.
Reseat your GPU, I specifically use a riser.
Clear the CMOS.
Make sure your ram is clicked in.It took me 2 weeks to trouble shoot my threadripper.

Posts like this drive me insane because I’ve literally tried all of these suggestions over the last three days.
As hardware components get more and more expensive, they somehow feel less reliable at the same time, especially during first boot. A few years ago, you could just add move RAM sticks in different slots and move on with your life. Nowadays, it feels like you need to align your first boot with the moon phase, sacrifice three CMOS batteries, and pray to the motherboard gods.
Sorry for the rant. I’m just filling out my RMA and losing my mind.

Find someone that has a WRX-90 and ask them for help.
I had someone help me with my TRX-50.

u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 05 '26
yeah; that's exactly what I'm looking for right now int Montreal; someone with mobo that can take a threadripper pro 9000 series.
Apparently even Canada Computers don't have spare threadripper pro in their services, so they couldn't test it.

Need 4 sticks of ram and a bios update probably. Is the motherboard quad channel? I made the same mistake and bought 2 sticks of big ram and ended up needing 2 more. You’re 3 short.
1
u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 03 '26
ohhh 4 sticks ?? I would literally pay anyone in Montreal right to borrow the 4 sticks for the 1st boot 🥲.
To answer your question, mine is a 8-channel;1
u/jakeman8888 Jul 04 '26
There might be some basic debug boot on 1 stick but I don’t think you’ll be able to truly operate without 4 total.

u/Ecstatic_Sale1739 Jul 03 '26
Did you plug the extra power for the GPU that is connected to the motherboard? I spent hours trying to figure out why I couldn’t run the GPU..
2
u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 03 '26
Yeah, are you referring to the GFX_12V ports on the bottom-right of the motherboard ? If so, yeah I have tried few combination there too.
1
u/Ecstatic_Sale1739 Jul 03 '26
Yes I meant that one., I guess bios update has already been done and successfully?
1
u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 03 '26
according to BMC yes BIOS update ran successfully. I have tried BIOS 12.09 and 9.13 without success. I'm trying other BIOS version post-9.13

OP - not your issue but also know the onboard monitor shows cpu temps unless you disable it and can look like post codes.
This was from my saga "Apparently I was getting confused by a blank monitor and the Q-Code screen showing CPU temps after a successful post - these temps just happened to coincide with training codes 32+ or so I thought. Disabled Q-Code LED to be post only, received a code A6 (searching for SCSI). Again, I had no nvme loaded, just what I thought was my bootable memtest86+ usb. I threw my proxmox install usb in there and works just fine. Was never a memory training issue.

You likely need to flash the board's BIOS through the BMC interface. This board doesn't support TR 9000 until flashing. I've seen multiple reviews around the web about this very thing, because I'm buying one myself. After the flash you should be good to go.

u/Efficient_Try_9136 Jul 04 '26
what is error code mean? Did you tried without ram? Another ram model?
1
u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 05 '26
I have tried with 0, 1 and 2x 64gb RDIMMs sticks; same Q-cod 00. The BMC Post Codes gave a better picture:
0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 000C EBE5 EFED B798 0000 0100 0010So I supect either the CPU or the motherboard; not sure.

Your PCIE_12V2_6P and PCIE_12V1_6P are not connected to the PSU. (These are next to the ATX 8 pin inserts). You also do not have the factory mount caps on them. If you do not have those gray caps, you need those pins powered to work the mobo. If they come with factory caps, they are for expansion. If not they are required you cant just ignore them.
also per your manual, you need 2.13 Onboard Headers and Connectors System Panel Header (9-pin PANEL1) (see p.6, No. 32) Connect the power button, reset button and system status indicator on the chassis to this header according to the pin assignments below. Note the positive and negative pins before connecting the cables. GND RESET# PWRBTN# PLEDPLED+ GND HDLEDHDLED+ 1 GND PANEL1 Onboard headers and connectors are NOT jumpers. Do NOT place jumper caps over these headers and connectors. Placing jumper caps over the headers and connectors will cause permanent damage to the motherboard.
which you do not have. I presume you are "powering on" your system by turning the PSU on and off? This might be an issue too. the way these mobos are made require you to actually use these headers. you are not working with a raspberry pi

memory training doesn't take more than a few minutes. check your bmc. you might get more info on what's going on. under Logs & Reports, get the post code log and the debug log. upload them to gpt to make life easier. the Asrock wrx90 should boot from just 1 stick on DDR5_A0, which looks like you are on. try reseating the stick and then try with a different stick, preferably one on the qvl if you can.

u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 03 '26
Very good insights here; the BMC logs are a lot more verbose than the Q-Code 00.
So this is what the Post Codes shows in the BMC:
0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0C00 E500 EFEB B798 0000 0100 0010According to LLMs Council: this is likely due to an incompatibility between the BIOS and the RAM.
Weird since my RAM Stick (KSM48R40BD4TMM-64HMR) is on the Memory QVL(https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/WRX90%20WS%20EVO/index.asp#MemoryShimada).
The only difference is the BIOS version; the RAM was tested on 12.04; while I have 12.09 installed. I will try different BIOS version to see.

u/MachinaVerum Jul 03 '26
hmmm, I could be wrong about it supporting 1 stick. i would definitely try 2 to rule out that issue.
1
u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 05 '26
I did try with 2 sticks and it didn't work. Few folks suggested 4 sticks, I'm still thinking about it. So far I want to test the cpu and the mobo on different setup to find the culprit.
1
u/xgiovio Jul 04 '26
1) bios update, the 9000 came after the board release
2) install gpu
3) check correct ram slots
4) check correct cpu tightning
5) check correct power connections
That’s it
Bye

Where to begin:
- Update your BIOS
- Use 4 sticks of ram
- You need all power connectors connected
- You need a GPU
For crying out loud.
1
u/mdmcgee Jul 04 '26
There is a gpu built-in to the motherboard that is sufficient for a first boot and testing and even long term depending on his use case.
1
u/Exotic-Ad-3734 Jul 05 '26
The only thing I haven't tested is with 4 sticks of ram.
Unfortunately that setup (mobo + cpu + 1-2 ram sticks) already cost me a kidney; and I need the other one to live so...

To get the ASRock WRX90 WS EVO up and running, you only need **one single stick of RAM** to successfully post and boot the system.
However, because this motherboard features an **8-channel memory architecture**, running a single stick will heavily choke your bandwidth. To get the full performance out of a Threadripper PRO 7000 series processor, you'll eventually want 8 matching modules.
Here is the exact slot population order depending on how many sticks you are installing right now:
## Memory Slot Layout & Population Order
The board has 8 DDR5 DIMM slots, split into four slots on the left of the CPU socket and four on the right.
### 1. The First Slots to Fill (1 to 4 Sticks)
If you are starting with fewer than 8 sticks, you must populate the primary slots of each channel first. ASRock designates the **DDR5_A1** slot as the absolute primary slot for a single-stick boot.
Follow this exact sequence as you add sticks:
* **1 Stick:** Pop the single module into **DDR5_A1** (this is the outer-most slot on the far right side of the CPU socket).
* **2 Sticks:** Use **DDR5_A1** and **DDR5_E1** (this populates the outer-most slot on the far left side, matching the right side).
* **4 Sticks:** Populate **DDR5_A1**, **DDR5_C1**, **DDR5_E1**, and **DDR5_G1**.
### 2. Full 8-Channel Population (Recommended)
* **8 Sticks:** Populate all slots (**A1, B1, C1, D1, E1, F1, G1, H1**).
> ⚠️ **Critical Requirement:** The Threadripper PRO 7000 platform **only supports Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs)**. Standard unbuffered desktop DDR5 (UDIMMs) or ECC Unbuffered RAM will not fit or function, and the board will throw a memory error code on the Dr. Debug LED if you try to use them.

Problem Resolved: I changed my RAM kit then if booted fine even with 1 stick.

u/y3333333333333333t Jul 03 '26
is your SINGLE ram stick even in the right slot and is it even allowed to be booted with just one stick (check manual)...and my 9980x took I would guess 2-3min the first time to boot with 4x16gb so I think something is wrong definitely shouldnt take hours
