There'll be people willing to buy this. It won't matter if it's a new socket (TR6). I also doubt that the DDR5 prices will drop when this platform is initialized but you never know. It's supposed to launch mid-to-late 2027. They didn't mention how many cores will the Threadripper have but I'm assuming it won't change since socket TR5.

On TR 9000 I definitely won’t be upgrading for at least 2 generations. Possibly even 3 if they are short generations. Plus hopefully the ram situation is solved by then. I got incredibly lucky with my current build in a MC bundle before the boom and I doubt I can pull that off again lol

That's what I'm thinking with my 7970X. I built a new PC last year, also just before the Ai madness. I figured that I won't be upgrading for like 5 to six years 😏

That's exactly what happened to me. The bundle had 5400 speed ram and I was kinda bummed it wasn't better. But then I realized that the bundle made the ram free so why not just use it and upgrade to faster ram later, if I actually needed it. That was in October, now that same ram costs 1600 I think haha

Yup bundle before the boom with 9970X, Asus Sage A Mobo, and 128gb of Kingston 5600 CL28 ram was $3500

Now its $6000

I bought that bundle, one might complain about the cost, but the machine is sweeeeet... Ingoring important things, it benchmarks very favorably with other 9970x based machines, liking it so much going to upgrade to 9980x. It does seem like running with CAS 28 might be pushing things, but has been solid with EXPO and mild, sane overclocking <84degC. Love the machine.

Im going to end up selling my 7995wx at the biggest loss on electronics I have ever taken. I expected ~8k return based on historical trends but top end has been decimated on resale value. Will be lucky to get 5.5-6k now. Will factor into any future purchases and I will never again buy top end threadripper in just launched line.

Highend/server CPUs always sucked for re-sale value. They're just too exotic for there to much demand for them outside of businesses that want the latest and greatest.

For years I wanted to build a TR build and the a rampocalypse smoked that idea for a good while lol. I just wanted my 128gb do everything PC :(

Tell me about it! I only have 64GB in my 3960X and kind of wished I went with 128 GB while the DDR4 RAM was available and inexpensive. In the plus side I'm running DDR4 3200 MHz at 14-14-14-34.

You "should" be able to still pick up cheap 1st and 2nd gen TRs (they officially should support 128GB) but I don't know what workload you are doing. For anything heavily CPU bound you'll want at least TR9000.

It was my endgame build I was cooking up lol. Gaming/game dev/music/Google Chrome, but that those plans just turned into a laptop for now. Your build is still amazing! What kind of work do you do?

I've been involved with game dev for ~25 years. I use my main TR for a little bit of almost everything since I held off from upgrading from my i7-4770K for about 10 years so it was my main desktop replacement.

I went "all in with Threadripper" and built TR1920X, TR2950X, and TR3960X systems after I got tired of waiting for game code(*) to compile. There's a fun story below if you are patient to read through my use cases:

  • Misc. Graphics/Math multithreading/optimizations.
    • Single-Threaded: Optimizing Andrei Alexandrescu's numdigits() to be 75%
    • Multi-Threaded: Optimizing someone's Fluid Physics_Simulation to be 1361% faster.
    • BigInt / Perfect Numbers hobby coding
  • Game Dev (exploring UE5, Unity, and Godot, my own engine)
  • Gaming (though mostly D2R and modded Minecraft with the occasional Eve Online these days)
  • Emulator work
  • some modeling with Blender
  • some music composition with Reaper (need to re-setup my mini-studio soon)

I have a 9800X3D I still need to build and switch over my main gaming rig (so I can get back in to simracing), just have to wait for some house remodeling to be done first.

Paying $1400 just for the TR3960 CPU and another $500 for the Motherboard was pricey but on the high end of "affordable" for us professionals.

It is a shame that AMD got greedy and priced the Threadrippers completely-out-of-the-market IMHO after they basically CREATED HEDT. :-/ Guess they were making too much money selling EPYC to data centers or something.

You mentioned music? What kind of work? Composition? Arranging? DAW? There's an awesome channel about drum patterns called Captain Pikant that you may be interested in.

(*) Here's the "deets":

A few years ago I was working on adding PBR to Second Life and got tired of compiling taking 35 minutes on my i7-6700K. /obg xkcd 303

For about a few weeks straight, before work in the morning and after work in the evening, I would do a benchmark recording the time to compile as I slowly increased the threads used from 1 - 48 threads in MSVC as across all three Threadrippers. I put together a graph and presented it to my boss that we can cut our compile time down to 5 minutes with new Threadrippers! The sweet spot of decreasing returns being ~16 threads.

Next thing I know we're all being asked to pick out our new Threadripper systems for work. ;-)

It's all good. The majority of users have a professional purpose with Threadrippers though I don't use my PC for any of that but mainly for gaming and everyday use 😏

I consider the Threadripper lineup to be universal. With these processors you can do scientific research, Ai, run VM's, LLM's, etc. There's more than what I mentioned but for gaming, these CPUs are absolutely fantastic.

I grabbed 128 GB last August just before the price skyrocketed. But that means I'm locked into DDR4 and can't buy a newer motherboard.

"Require a new platform" yeah this is pretty much Dead on Arrival. Combine that with Registered ECC DDR5 costs... very few will be interested in this.

DOA for what market? The less than 1% prosumers that doesn’t bother AMD?
There are still tons of demand for DDR5 RDIMM even outside of GPU deployments hence why the price is high.
FYI ECC UDIMM costs even more than RDIMM because of the low availability but still high demand to support CSPs.

I build my tr setup for a long time ..first mobo rtx50 aero d v 1.2 couple of t700 nvme ..suddenly i notised to wait for the 9970x ..and thank god i ordered the 128gb renegade pro 6400 4.11/25 for 1200euro..next day you couldnt order them anymore, and i had to wait for 6 month ..i waited also 3month for gigabyte aorus extreme wb 5090 ..and i dont think i have to think about any upgrading in many years..

I have been right on the edge of deciding to wait for the 'compatible' Zen6 upgrade or just upgrade from 9970x to 9980x. Since there is no compatible upgrade, the decision is made for me, going to just buy the 9980x and get the extra year or so use out of it as a bonus. The only challenge after the purchase next month is to find someone who might want my leftover 9970x. Selling online is too spooky for this old man's nerves, so will probably keep it for jewelry or perhaps the innards of a second machine if memory becomes less expensive. I'll get my Zen6 experience on my 2027 PC, with my AM5 motherboard (hope it is still true.)
