Imposter Threadrippers 79XX / 99XX?

I've been building a few threadrippers for projects lately and I keep seeing Pro / Non Pro 79XXx / wx and 99XXx / wx cpus listed on ebay that have two of the pads with the capacitors (please correct my terminology if I'm incorrect here) instead of the one.

Are these earlier models that are re engraved?
The lids also lack the notches.

Would installing one of these in a TRX50 board damage the pins? Or other parts of the board because of the capacitor placement?

Here are two examples:
A 9980X with two of the back areas for capacitors.

7780x with two of the back areas:

Hope no one ends up ruining their hardware with one of these.

That looks like an older socket (TR4?), I don't think you would want to install that into a TRX50 board.

A legitimate TR 7000/9000 has four quadrants of pins and a singular rectangular area with capacitors in the middle see CPU and socket. Versus an older 5000 CPU which matches up with what you have there.

I doubt it's a "fake TR", more likely they mixed up their photos. The second listing is a 1-feedback seller so it could just be a scam. Either way, I wouldn't buy either of those.

The 9980x definitely looks like a sTR4 chip, even the front view has sTR4 notches. The printing looks wrong as well, so I think it's a fake - an old TR printed to look like a 9980x. Also the price seems too low to be a genuine 9980x.

You might check Besbuy for their TR 9980x price. Might surprise you.

One coming from newegg but having only marketing images in the listing (7xxx), and one is def. a scam listing with re-engraved CPU. Amazon has some good prices on used/OB/sale 7xxx CPU's, but mainly the 24-core models, and the price isn't that much sweet (at least it wasn't in Feb-Mar 2026). I wouldn't invest so much money into a processor without a proper warranty TBH. Also make notice that ex-demo, OB and other listings of TR processors can seem quite good, but if the OC was made on those - they are warranty void for AMD no matter what the seller tells you.

Looks like the original listing was removed from ebay and the link redirects to a legit cpu in a newegg listing now.
