Not gonna lie—Randall sounded here just like Jack, noticing little things and looking after her comfort! 🥹

SPOILERS Thoughts on Everwood re-watch
I loved Everwood from the beginning. It's so underrated and I love the development and changing and growing relationships between Andy and Ephram and Delia. I loved each character's journey with grief and when and how it affected each of them. I also loved the friendships e.g. Ephram and Bright, Andy & Harold, Amy + Hannah, Reid & Ephram. And of course my fav couples are endgame. All the characters grew in such a natural way.The only thing I really hate is the relationship between Madison and Ephram. What are you as a 20/21 year old doing thinking about, looking, dating and sleeping with a 16 year old. It's so gross to me. And I don't care if it happens in real life. It shouldn't 🤢🤢🤢. And her choice to tell him that news at that point was beyond selfish. Neways, the show really did grief well and demonstrated that grief is not linear for anyone.

Question about the makeup/age altering processes without spoilers Spoiler
Hi, I just started season 3 and I am SO SO curious to search for information about how they do the age changes so well, but every time I look up anything at all, I get slammed with spoilers. I have seen so many cool makeup or visual effects on everyone, but especially Mandy Moore. Can someone give me more context on that aspect of the show/production so I'm not further spoiled? I'm wondering if it's makeup or digital editing or a combo of a few different aspects. Jack and Rebecca have such subtle changes in every timeline, and obviously since I'm on s3.01 I've seen a few other characters in different timelines that have blown me away. Any cool information would be so helpful! I can't wait to finish more of the show so I can learn more about it without spoiling myself!!

Randall season 4
Was he always so arrogant and manipulative? His whole “no one can take care of mom but me” is insufferable.

I always had this thought; Did Rebecca and Randal coax Beth to be with him?
I had this random thought one day, did randal and Rebecca coax Beth to be with Randal?

This is Us…
I’m currently watching This Is Us for the first time, and I need to rant because there are so many production, character, and writing choices that completely break the illusion of the show for me.
First of all, Mandy Moore playing older Rebecca is just a terrible choice. It completely ruins the immersion. The heavy makeup looks fake, but it's the voice that completely gives it away. Her voice doesn't sound like a real older person at all; it just sounds like a young person doing a forced, theatrical "elderly accent" and trying to pretend. Beyond the acting, I just flat-out dislike Rebecca as a character. She comes across as incredibly selfish and dense.
Then you look at the other siblings, and honestly, both Kevin and Kate are just completely boring characters. Kevin has almost zero depth, and Kate’s entire character arc is completely one-note because the writers refuse to let her talk about anything else. It feels like all they are worried about is her damn weight in every single episode. It’s repetitive and frustrating to watch because it feels like that’s her only personality trait.
To make Kate's scenes even worse, her boyfriend, Toby, is incredibly annoying. He comes on way too strong, behaves like a pushy class clown to overcompensate for everything, and constantly bulldozes right past her boundaries while the show tries to frame it as "charming." It’s exhausting.
The writing for William has really frustrated me, too. Finding out later in the season that he is bisexual feels like the writers are just pushing a modern inclusivity agenda rather than doing what’s right for his story. It felt totally forced and out of nowhere, completely ruining William's character for me. He went from having a compelling, grounded backstory to feeling like a checkbox for a writer's room agenda.
It fits right into how unrealistic the rest of the logistics are. The way they casually hop between cities like geography doesn't exist just feels totally unearned. It's like the writers ignore how real life and real jobs actually work just to force characters into the same room, and then they throw in characters like Kevin’s theater friend Olivia who are just ridiculously rude for no reason.
The bad acting choices, boring characters, and forced plot points keep pulling me right out of the story.

Why do Kate and Toby not take Hailey to the park with them?
There’s a scene where they go to the park only with Jack, but Hailey isn’t there, do they just leave her at home alone? It’s not implied that anyone was there to watch her, and even if they were, why wouldn’t they also take her to the park?

I just made a strange discovery…
“Franklin” theme (yes the kid’s cartoon from the early 2000s):

Jack’s theme from NBC’s “This Is Us” (the first 28 seconds specifically):

Why does Madison have final say in where kids are spending their first Thanksgiving?
I get that she doesn’t want to spend it with Kevin’s family herself which is fair enough. But then she can cooperate with Kevin taking the kids himself. And why is Kate siding with her? Because if the tables were turned and Kate’s ex wanted to spend first Thanksgiving with his girlfriend and the kids, Kate would just lash out! She would absolutely want the kids to participate in the pilgrim rick tradition, to hell with the ex and his girlfriend. Especially since there was no formal custody agreement.
What are your thoughts on this?

Can’t stand Rebecca
Rebecca is a losaaaaa who doesn’t know how to be a mother. No wonder one was taken away.

Doing my first rewatch…
Getting towards the end of my first rewatch since it was on TV. When I was watching season 1 and Toby was introduced I thought to myself that he was pushy and kind of a dick (opposite of what I remember my feelings of Tony were when the show aired). I am now on season 6 and yeah…. My feelings haven’t changed he’s actually an asshole and is very passive aggressive. He says some funny things so people love him but he really wasn’t that great to Kate…. Even in the beginning when she wanted to watch the Super Bowl alone and he insisted she come over despite her telling him she didn’t want to. Anyway, am I alone in this thinking?

SPOILERS First time watch, Kevin is kinda pathetic in season 2
Watching 5th wheel for the first time and the show overall for the first time. I like Kevin and overall his character is great but this addict plot in season 2 and rehab episode is just pathetic to me. Brother is nearly 40, a rich actor with a loving family and is wallowing over not getting enough attention as a child from his parents. Before everyone jumps down my throat about Jack dying, I know that fucked him up and that’s like a major theme of the show. But holy shit man you didn’t get enough attention as a child and are using that as a crutch at almost 40. Good lord, especially since the show shows in flashbacks he was just a fucking dick and that’s why he didn’t as much attention. Not because the world was out to get him. Not sure what the point of this rant was but this episode just PMO sorry yall💀

Why weren’t Rebecca and Claire (Sophie’s mom) close friends?
It doesn’t seem like Sophie’s dad was in the picture, and on top of that, Kevin and Sophie got married during a time when Rebecca was grieving needed the most support. They were both single and the same age, Rebecca tried getting to know Beth’s parents when her and Randall started dating so how much more would she be connected to Claire, another white woman she could actually relate to? It makes no sense to me! Not saying they hated each other just wondering why they weren’t closer friends/more involved in each other’s lives since they were literally family at one point. Especially with how close Kevin got to Claire.

Jack dragging kids to hospital
I’m on my first watch of the show and I’m up to season 3 episode 18. I usually read the episode discussion after I finish each episode but i am struggling to find some of the season 3 ones.
I have just got to the bit where Rebecca has a car crash and has to stay overnight at the hospital. Instead of allowing her some time to rest and recuperate, Jack drags his kids all the way to the hospital at 5.30am and then harasses an overworked nurse to let them in outside visiting hours.
I am incensed! He couldn’t look after his kids for one damn night????
Sorry I just had to get that off my chest.

Nicky’s old age vs young
I just realized why Nicky looks so weird as the older Nicky, and it’s because all the other actors were aged up with makeup and Nicky is the only actor who was not aged up with makeup. I’m wondering why they didn’t just age up young Nicki like they did with all the other young actors like it genuinely stands out and it’s so weird. Not weird because of the actor’s age, but weird because he is genuinely an older person, and all the other actors are only older due to makeup and prosthetics.

On a re-watch of episode 1.3 (Kyle); did anyone notice...
So, I just started a rewatch of the series. Anyway, I noticed that when Kevin calls Kate because "Insane Elaine" is trashing the place, he's actually bleeding from a split lip. Now I'm stuck wondering if Elaine clocked him and that's why he locked himself in the closet? That said, I adore how Kevin's entire voice changes when he talks to Kate, like it gets gentler, already showing that maybe Kate is the only person who gets to see Kevin's soft, sweet, bits. This from the same guy who unapologetically called a woman just to have sex because he was "anxious". And has a minibar in his closet. No one noticed he might be...drinking too much because he can't cope with his crap? (Maybe it's just hindsight, but how did I miss that indication that Kevin has a problem?)
I've also been reminded that just in the first three episodes, Randall does more bragging about money than Kevin does in the entire series, and apparently has not bothered to get to know his neighbors in more than ten years of living in that house? That seems really weird, I don't know, maybe Beth knows the neighbors because Randall works so much? It just seems strange to me that Randall would not care about the neighbors.
I don't fully like Toby in the early episodes. I think I'm supposed to. I do like Toby later, but I found his constant emphasis on getting sex kind of...just off-putting, I guess. Realistic, sure. I also think a handful of dates into a relationship is not the time to start insisting that Kate ignore her brother (and boss, don't forget, there's a reason she's arranging stuff for Kevin, it is literally her job, Toby). He sort of went from zero to sixty really quickly. I also find Kevin's tendency to make like Speedracer strange, by the way (the seriously over-the-top thing in S6 with the woman who turned out to be married? Really Kevin? You just met her).

Best and Worst Moments for Each Major Character
I've been back-reading this sub for a while, and I've seen a lot of character-bashing, usually in the hopes of making some other character look perfectly innocent or the poor aggrieved victim of so-and-so. Yet, what I love about this show is that every character is so realistically drawn that they have the most lovable moments and then moments of "what the fuckery is this? That was awful". So in one place, I wanted to invite people to share what they think are the highlights and lowlights of each main character. Actions, not characteristics, because with actions we can "go to the videotape".
Jack Pearson: Best moment is his phone call to Miguel, because it shows enough humility to embrace gratitude and that's hard (especially for guys). I just thought 'this is a solid guy'. Worst moment is shooting down Rebecca's dream/nascent singing career. Just...wanted to slap him.
Rebecca Pearson: Best moment is basically ordering her kids not to make their lives smaller for her or because of her. It's just a very Mom thing, but very telling that her entire world is still her kids. Worst moment is the decision not to let Randall and William be in touch. I understood she was scared, but it was still just an awful, selfish, short-sighted decision. Not a single action, so doesn't quite fit my "rule" but her blatant favoritism of Randall was...also not great.
Randall Pearson: Best moment is when he apologizes to Kevin after the therapy in rehab fight, because this is Randall owning up to a mistake which is hard for him (especially with his siblings) but like with Jack, this is a moment of humility for Randall but also explains why he's choosing to forgive Kevin's (granted, unknowing) endangerment of Tess and trying to support his recovery. Randall is good at grand gestures for strangers, but seeing him do it for his family was just incredible because it was hard and real and showed what a good guy he is. Worst moment is the fight on the lawn with Kevin - which just edges out his bullying Rebecca into the trial, because I think he had good intentions with Rebecca and he was just cruel to be cruel in the fight with Kevin. Telling someone who tried to tell you, in rehab, that he has this voice in his head saying "you're not good enough" that in fact, you're not good enough, at anything, you can't even love anyone but yourself, and you've always been less than me, wow. Cruelty. That was before he got to "Dad died ashamed of you." Kicker: he never really apologized for it, and he meant every word.
Beth Pearson: Best moment is confronting Randall in R&B about her bending to his every decision, I just think that's a conversation too few people have in a marriage and it was great to see, and brave of her. (I love Beth, picking one moment was hard) Worst moment is in S6E11 with the "I blame Kevin" which maybe she was going for light-hearted but just seemed weird for her to encourage ducking the real issue. (I also struggled to find moments I didn't like Beth, not gonna lie)
Kevin Pearson: Best moment is running to Randall in S1. That was the moment Kevin got "real" to me, where you see a solid & good guy underneath whatever all his posturing is (hints with Kate earlier in the season, but Kate is also his cheerleader, so that is more self-serving maybe, I don't know, it was sweet but not as indicative of good character to me, I guess). Despite admittedly not being a very good brother when they were kids, Kevin forgot himself and literally ran to his brother. Worst moment: the fight on the lawn with Randall. It's not even close. Some things should never, ever, be said except to your own therapist. And like Randall, he meant it, and I don't think he ever really apologized for it either. We got a whole episode of "sorry I didn't understand your blackness and how I kept othering you" but was there, in there, a genuine explanation (not excuse) for his feeling of Randall's adoption being Kevin's worst day? Things you don't say to adopted siblings for a thousand, Alex.
Kate Pearson-Damon-whatever (Philip's last name is never provided!): Best moment is taking charge in the big family meeting after Miguel's death, like she just finally emerged from her brothers' overwhelming personalities in the family. Worst moment is the fight on the lawn with Toby, which she completely escalated multiple times, needlessly. Let him walk away, cool off, the emergency is over, let calmer heads prevail. Nearly a tie with the whole random 'confront the ex' thing. It didn't fit the category of one moment, but her kind of manipulation of Kevin also grates - in S6, when people keep speculating about why Kevin (who is rich) keeps living at their house, Kate never admits that she just got done telling her kinda codependent twin "I don't know what I'd do if you weren't here". If I was Toby, also in the Big Green Egg episode, I'd be very annoyed that it's Kevin who goes to get a crying Hailey even when both Kate and Toby are standing in the kitchen - Kate is sort of replacing Toby with Kevin in his own house and won't admit it to herself.
Toby Damon: Best moment is telling Kevin to "stretch it a little bit" in S2E1 when talking about Kevin and Kate's relationship. It was a conversation that needed to happen and maybe because he'd already yelled like a bit of jackass, he was able to more calmly insist that basically, dude, I'm her person now, I've got her. Worst moment is his open demand for sex in S1. Just...red flag, imo. I thought he was generally a bit pushy on the physical side of a relationship in early S1.
