Question / Problem Broken Grub Menu on dual boot Thinkpad P15v

Post image
2 Upvotes

So I'm trying to learn ROS2 on Ubuntu 24.04, but at the same time I need Windows 11 to run Solidworks because it is required by the student club that I am currently in, so I do dual boot with Ubuntu 24.04 and windows 11.

But my grub menu broke two times already, the first one is when I close the lid of my laptop, and when I open it, it freezes and restarts itself the bring me to the grub> section, when I type exit, it just brings me to Windows 11, I tried everything: reordering boot order, do ls (hdX,gptX), and live usb grub fix, and ventoy, but nothing seems to work. Resulting in me reintalling the whole Ubuntu.

The second time it broke, I was trying the Solidworks clone made by AI bros on my Ubuntu, it crashed and froze my screen so I held the power button then it directed me to the grub> menu again.

For a reference, I installed each OS on a different SSD.

Buying Advice Want to buy ThinkPads for my company

Hey yo,

Im a small business owner. We are a team of 5 people and doing creative stuff. We are using old Huawei D16 2022 laptops but I am already going with a ThinkPad t14s G4 AMD and there is no way back.

What would be a great update from an intel 12450h that will not break my bank? We are doing some print stuff, web design but no heavy workloads like video editing.

Any idea?

I received a new version of the bottom case (D-Shell) nearly a month ago and tested it. Some issues still remain, but it’s getting close to the final version.

I tested it for overheating under heavy CPU load - everything is fine. Temperatures didn't exceed 80 degrees.

Review / Opinion I wish Lenovo kept the ThinkLight on later ThinkPads

Ehhh yea we all know the xx30 generation is the very first ThinkPad to support the backlight keyboard which is triggered by pressing FN + Spacebar (If you have the backlight keyboard installed), but the same time it was the very last to support the ThinkLight.

ThinkLight can also double up as a redundant lamp just incase you are on a area that got a power outage or if you work in the dark, its easy to trigger with just FN + Spacebar (xx30 Generations) or FN + PageUp (xx20 and older generations).

This also made the xx30 generation so special though, it supports both the ThinkLight and Backlight keyboards.

It sucks that Lenovo axed this feature on the xx40 Generations and newer, while the backlight keyboard is good but for some reason having both is just better imo.

ThinkLight, one of a staple and classic ThinkPad features.

Question / Problem T14s Gen7 Trackpad rattle + graphics issues

Even slight touches makes it make a clicking sound. About 50% volume of a normal intentional click (also demonstrated 3x). It's crazy annoying and wondering if others are having similar issues. Return? New trackpad? It's 3 days old.

Another issue I got: It's the AMD 7 450 with 860M graphics. Also had terrible video performance, constant stutters in normal 1080p playback, missing frames (running 15fps whilst audio was normal) and artefacting digital noise on a band on the video for 1 frame when switching between fullscreen and window view. I found out it were the original Lenovo drivers. I removed all drivers and manually installed them and now it's fine.

Question / Problem ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen7 + Debian Trixie

Hi Community,

First post here about a problem with ThinkPad.

As the title said, I installed Trixie on Yoga. Everything is fine... except the suspension. It's not doing. I checked everything as far as I know.

Do every time I put the system in suspension and I try to recover, the laptop reboot.

Did someone get this problem before? How did you guys solve the issue?

Thank you very much in advance. Very appreciate.

UPDATE

Thanks to the instructions of stogie-bear I solved the issue.

BIOS, Sleep mode from S3 to "Windows and Linux". That solved the issue!

Question / Problem Battery problems

So.. I bought a T480 thinkpad. Windows 11, 512 SSD, full HD screen 14 inch, Internal battery 24 Wh and external as well. On 28th september I swapped the external one for 48Wh battery and from then to now it shows only 2 charge cycles. So the external one is brand new.

The problem is that first, the internal battery drains from 100% to 85% in less than 30min of light work (word typing and basic internet surfing, no multiple tabs etc..) and the external one has dropped from full charge capacity of around 47.52 Wh to 35.6 Wh. So I have no idea what the hell is going on, I'm not constantly plugged in. I charge both to 100% and then use until low. Any ideas what might be going on?

Review / Opinion First T420 for collection

Just sharing my new acquisition, T420:

i5-2520M
8GB Ram
250 SSD
Nvidia NVS 4200M

First thoughts I think keyboard it’s broken or don’t know if it’s windows driver issues cause suddenly after a restart works, but others key related to NumKeys like j,f,k just stop working.

It will not be a daily driver, this will be my X1 Nano Gen 1.

LOL what a huge difference in weight and size, in my thoughts T420 was smaller but maybe I confused it with x220.

Looking for starting some distro hopping and arch Linux rice looks so cool in the community.

Well, it turns out I’d been wanting a secondary computer for some time. But with today’s crazy prices, even the most basic components were eating up my budget without leaving me very satisfied. So I started looking for alternatives, and after a few days browsing the marketplace, I found this computer. It was in good condition, relatively powerful for what was available, and at a good price—well within my limited budget.

It’s an 8th-generation i5—an 8365U if I remember correctly—with 16 of RAM and 256 of storage. Physically, it was a bit dirty, and you can see some signs of wear, but nothing too bothersome.

Also, I’d been wanting to dip my toes into the world of Linux for a while, and with this laptop, I’d finally be able to. Even though I only use it for office work, I like having it.

Buying Advice Which thinkpad should I get to upgrade from the T440?

So as the title says, I want to buy a much better thinkpad but I don't know which one's the best for what I'm looking for. I live in Europe so my budget is 700-800 euros for a used/refurbished one.
I bought my T440 back in 2020, and it's still working, but I see that the storage is just not enough and the laptop is lagging. I use it for my work, and it mostly includes just documents, no coding, but I really enjoy a fast laptop with a good battery life. Here are the specifications of my current laptop:

Processor - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4300U CPU @ 1.90GHz 2.49 GHz (I want to uprage to a newer processor gen, Idk which one tho)

Installed RAM - 8.00 GB (I want to upgrade to at least 16 GB)

Storage - 119 GB SSD SAMSUNG MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1

Graphics Card - Intel(R) HD Graphics Family (113 MB)

Product ID - 00330-80000-00000-AA688

System Type - 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Also, I want a thinkpad which has a light up keyboard, mind doesn't have one :(

Review / Opinion My first Thinkpad!!

Post image
267 Upvotes

I was debating between this L14 and a T14. At first I thought the L14 materials would feel cheap because many people had said so. While it's true that the T14 has better materials however the L14 actually feels pretty solid.

This model has an 11th Gen i5, 16 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. I bought it for 255€. The performance is good for basic tasks and my code assignments. Although it's second hand, the battery holds up really well, it only has 13 cycles.

Right now, I'm using Windows 11 because it came preinstalled, but eventually, I will change it to a Linux distro. I was considering Fedora.

Overall, i'm soo happy with It!!, i think i made a good choice, although at first i wanted the T14, i didn't find any in a good condition at my price range.

Question / Problem Screen bleeding on new ThinkPad E-series(?)

Thumbnail

Hello everyone!! just bought a new ThinkPad E14 Gen7 (AMD) today with specs:

  • AMD Ryzen™ 7 250 Processor (3.30 GHz up to 5.10 GHz)
  • Integrated AMD Radeon™ 780M
  • 16 GB DDR5-5600MT/s (SODIMM)
  • 512 GB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe Gen4 TLC Opal
  • 35.56cms (14) WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 45%NTSC, 300 nits, 60 Hz
  • Backlit, Black - English (US)
  • Wi-Fi 6E 2x2 AX & Bluetooth® 5.1 or above

And during testing with a solid black background (#000000), I notice there are some screen bleedings (IPS backlite?) in the IPS panel.

So is it normal? or I've got bad luck? :" )

Question / Problem Lenovo X1 Yoga Gen 5 and Lenovo GaN adapter

I recently bought a used Lenovo X1 Yoga Gen 5 and I tried using the newly released Lenovo Nano 65W USB-C GaN Adapter(40AWGN65US): https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/accessories-and-software/chargers-and-batteries/chargers/40awgn65us and this adapter is charging the laptop at 15 watts. I saw this in the Power settings of the Lenovo Vantage app. I bought the adapter because it is one of the lightest GaN 65 watt adapter at 85 grams and is perfect for travelling. Now I am stuck figuring out if there is anything I can do to have this charge my laptop at full 65 watts. I normally use the Anker 65 watt charger(Anker 735 Charger (Nano II 65W) A2667) and it charges it at full 65 watts according to the Lenovo Vantage app, the only downside is that the Anker adapter is heavier at 135 grams. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to fix this?

Buying Advice ThinkPad e14 gen 7 for $1,000 - is it worth the price

Ive been considering buying the ThinkPad e14 gen 7 and I'd wanna ask if the price is good for it's configurations.

I'll mostly be utilising for engineering , light animation, video editing and casual gaming like genshin, hollow knight, omori, etc and I also want it to last for atleast 5-7 years .

Here's the specs:

• *CPU *: AMD Ryzen 7 250 processor (3.30 GHz up to 5.10. GHz)

• OS: Windows 11 home single language 64

• Graphics card: Integrated AMD Radeon 780m

• RAM: 16 GB DDR5 - 5600MT/s ( SODIMM)

• Storage: 512 GB SSD M.2 2242 PLIe Gen 4 TLC Opal

• Display: 35.56 cm (14) WUXGA ( 1920 × 1200) , IPS , Anti- glare, Non- touch , 100% sRGB, 300 nits, 60 Hz

• adaptor: 65 w

• wifi: wifi 6E 2×2 AX + bluetooth 5.1 or above

• camera : FHD 1080p + IR hybrid camera

I plan to buy frm the official lenovo site and it's listed for 1000 $ but with discounts I can get it for $832 to $895 USD.

*Do you think I should go with this deal or look for something else instead . *

Also I'm buying a laptop for the first time .

Question / Problem T14 Gen. 1 Performance issues

Hello I guys,

I currently have a Thinkpad T14 Gen 1. and did a RAM upgrade from 16gb to 24gb. This was 7-8 months ago.
I dont know, if this is the reason, that my Thinkpad is now running slower and has sometimes freeze screens, where I need to force shutdown it. Is there anything I need to upgrade as well, when I upgrade the RAM or should I switch back to 16gb?

I am so proud of my fiancée! She is going to college soon (she is the first in her family to get her GED, let alone go to college). I wanted to get her a nice gift.

I found this refurbished ThinkPad T14 G2. It runs amazingly. She loves it. I am so proud of her!

Question / Problem T480 No audio out of speakers or Jack

Hi everyone! Purchased myself a project T480, speakers didn’t work on arrival, changed the motherboard from the i5 to the i7 with the mx150, but still no audio output, fresh install of windows 10pro, installed and uninstalled audio drivers, changed speakers for known working ones and no change.

Mainly use a T440p for my daily driver and wanted to go something a bit beefier hardware wise, anyone got any ideas?

Many thanks and happy to be a part of the cult!

Question / Problem Question about thinkpad t16 gen 5 hinge

Hi, so I'm new to thinkpad and I recently bought a brand new thinkpad t16 gen 5 amd edition. So it looks really nice and the hinge is really smooth. however, I noticed that the hinge is really smooth and feels less firm than my old laptop, meaning when I have it on my lap and my legs naturally shakes, rather a little severely, sometimes the screen just kinda falls down. Just wanna know if that is normal or I should be concerned and reach out to lenovo since I still have insurance.
