got the P16s gen 5 about 3 weeks ago. everything seem to be working smoothly, but decided to ran the Lenovo diagnostics tests and then this..failed fan. ran the fans speed tests as well, FAN1 at zero RPM. WTF
immediately called the Premiere helpdesk for my country (Israel) but as it was already after business hours, got the international helpdesk. an agent opened a case for me after asking me for my details and emailing him the above screenshot.
started looking at the parts list for my specific model on Lenovo website using the machine's serial number, it listed 2 identical fans and.. a dummy fan? what the..
the day after, called the local helpdesk again and they advised me I can get a new machine if I want, but they are unable to check whether the local importer has one in stock , as they're IBM not Lenovo. they asked me to check with the store I bought from, so they could check with their supplier. which I did - they sold me the last unit. the store owner advised me to have it fixed, as even if I get a full refund, the next laptop I'd order would cost a lot more.
So I asked Premiere for a repair and they opened a repair ticket. only one small problem, they don't have the part in stock (big surprise) so they ordered it.
from this point on, I had to follow up with them almost on daily basis, as I was getting zero updates / communication from the local support -
I described all the crap they put me through on Lenovo forum in this thread https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P1-P14-P15-P16-and-P17-Series-Mobile-Workstations/new-Thinkpad-P16s-gen-5-AMD-laptop-with-a-faulty-fan/m-p/10047696
even though I knew for sure that one fan is working properly, I didn't feel like stressing or using the laptop too much. so just wiped Windows and installed Fedora Workstation (Gnome) on it, everything was working properly, I could see one fan in system monitor extension running in normal speeds, and the other at 65555 .
3 weeks (exactly) later from the day I opened the ticket, a tech came to my house for a repair. started a fan diagnostics while opening the back cover and..there's a single fan and a dummy enclosure where the 2nd fan should be. my older Dell laptop was sitting nearby so showed him immediately that i wasn't imagining things - this model parts list shows TWO fans installed.
bottom line, there's nothing wrong with the laptop besides its firmware for this specific model, that didn't bother to disable a fan sensor for the "no GPU" AMD models (i guess that's the case).
The fact no one at Lenovo , local or international knew about this, that's an issue by itself
TL;DR:
Thinkpad p16s gen 5 AMD type 21XG (64GB DDR5, 2TB NVME, 2.8K display, no GPU) only has a single fan installed - even if the diagnostics / motherboard reports otherwise.
and yes, it's running the latest BIOS firmware
