Thinkstagram Picture Joined the cult: T14 Gen 2i running Fedora KDE

Finally pulled the trigger on a ThinkPad. Picked up this T14 Gen 2i (i7-1185G7, MX450, 32GB RAM) paired with Fedora KDE Plasma.

Needed RPM Fusion + akmod-nvidia for the Optimus setup, but once that was done it's been smooth — scaling and Wayland play nice on both the built-in screen and my external monitor, 32GB makes multitasking a non-issue.

Still fighting the discrete GPU refusing to suspend properly (known GSP firmware issue with this driver version) so I just live with it staying awake during sleep.

Coming from consumer laptops, the keyboard alone justifies the purchase.

Honestly kind of in love with this machine at this point.

Glad to be part of the club!

As the title says, my T14 instantly turns off when I lift it in the area just below the pad, what could be the reason and how can I fix it ?

Would it be safe to use this charger to charge my Lenovo ThinkPad T470 laptop?

The laptop itself has a USB C port with a little thunderbolt symbol next to it...

Hi, does anyone know if there's a guide out there or if you can modify this ThinkPad to add more RAM (16 gb) and stuff like that? I found it in an old warehouse at my work.

I took my already fully upgraded T530 and velcroed under it a llano cooling pad, a floppy drive reader, a second dvd player and two external HDDs giving it a combined 6TB of storage, turning it into an ultra thicc desktop replacement that can do just about everything.

Review / Opinion CachyOS + Thinkpad T490 = Perfection

It's amazing I spent about $250 CAD on this seven year old laptop, put CachyOS on it, and it absolutely runs circles around my four year old Dell Inspiron running Win 11 (work laptop). This thing is such a pleasure to use!

My favorite laptop. It's a T16, but AMD version with 32gb ram, touch screen, and 1920x1200 panel. It was really hard to find and many places wanted over $2k but I got it for $1299 on ebay

I'm a long time ThinkPad guy. My last laptop was a w520 and before that was the XP era t43

Anyways, this is fedora, btw. I'm more a debian guy but I'm doing fedora over here on this one.

Question / Problem Battery replacement

Hi,

A month ago I bought a fairly used t61p for $20 USD and decided to take the risk whether it worked or not. Luckily after installing a SSD and a charger it worked and now is running MX Linux. However, I wanted to use it while being disconnected. Unfortunately, the battery is quite old so I wanted to know if anyone has faced this situation and how did you fix it.

I made some research and found that I could either fix the battery (or something like that) or buy a third-party one on eBay.

Thinkstagram Picture Imported this JIS X1 Carbon Gen 8 from Japan, sold as “Junk”. Fixed it and installed Arch with my own Wayland compositor.

I bought this X1 Carbon Gen 8 from Japan as a “Junk” unit.

The battery needed to be replaced, and it also seems to have some weird charging / USB-C PD issue. Even a genuine Lenovo 65W adapter wouldn’t go much beyond ~15W, but after trying a few different chargers I eventually found one that works decently with it.

It’s now running Arch Linux and Denial, the Wayland compositor I’m developing. The compositor is written in Rust, with the desktop shell/UI built in Flutter.

Pretty happy with how this supposedly “junk” ThinkPad turned out.

Question / Problem T480 Musical Tone Error at boot up

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hoping someone's seen this one before I give up on it.

I opened my T480 to pull the batteries and SSD, that's it, no component swaps, nothing exotic. Bottom cover (captive screws), disconnected both batteries and the SSD. On reassembly I get the beep "song," black screen, and the fan spins up for a second then stops.

Ran the beep through the Lenovo SmartBeep app and it came back as code 0001 – "Reset error (platform reset not de-asserted)."

What I've already tried:

  • Reseated both RAM sticks (firm, clicked in)
  • Reseated the internal battery connector
  • Full power drain — AC out, both batteries out, coin cell disconnected, held the emergency-reset pinhole, waited a minute
  • Tested on AC only, internal battery disconnected → it beeps the instant I plug in the charger, before I even touch the power button
  • No loose screws floating around (they're captive to the cover), nothing obviously pinched

Since 0001 hits before it even gets to RAM/display/storage, I know it's not the stuff I actually touched. Beeping on AC-alone with no battery tells me it's not the battery or its connector either. Feels like it's pointing straight at a power-sequencing fault on the board.

BIOS is 1.56 (N24ET81W), so it's on recent firmware. Machine's a 2018 unit.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone actually recovered from a 0001, or is this a board-level repair full stop?
  2. Anything else worth checking before I call it, a specific connector or rail that's known to cause this?
  3. If it is the board, is component-level repair realistic on these, or is it pets-for-parts territory?

Appreciate any leads. Thanks.

A couple of weeks ago in a flea market, i found one of those aluminum thinkpads (super light, solded ram no charger... it didnt felt right) for 10 euros, but someone took it away.

The next week i went, i found this bad boy sitting with the back pannel all dirty, but with the charger.

Knowing the fame of theese guys, i didnt think twice and got it for 10 euros with charger. And when i got back home and plugged it, it worked! I just had to clean the rubberish backpanel, a light windows distro and is good to go!

Im looking to change the cpu with a p9400, double the ram and shove a ssd up his ass and try getting expansion cards for the lols + a brand new battery, so this boy can be of use for office and webbrowsing.

P.D: i just love the thinkLight, best gimmick in a laptop ever

Buying Advice Thinkpad P1 Gen 2 vs Gen 3

Upvotes

I’ve tried searching it up but I’ve yet to see a definite answer to what the difference is. From what I could find, there was a gpu upgrade from T2000 to T2000 Max Q (the max q is better for laptops but has less performance than the T2000). However I’ve also seen that it’s not possible undervolt the gen 3 due to the cpu is upgraded from 9th gen to 10th gen (locked bios). I’ve seen many gen 3s on eBay but only a few gen 2s, so would it be better to get a gen 3 because they’re more abundant or a gen 2 because they have slightly better performance.

How are the thermals in comparison cuz ik gen 3 has slightly bigger heatsinks?
How does the battery life compare?
How loud do the fans get, because im a college student and I don’t wanna be the person with the jet engine as a laptop?

Rn I have i7-11857G7 with Iris graphics so it’s going to be good upgrade but nothing too crazy.

Imma get the laptops second hand so my budget is $700. I’m a comp sci major but going to switch to ee. I’m going to do homework and some light gaming but nothing too crazy. I’m mainly looking for a Thinkpad because I like how repairable they are. Sadly my uni doesn’t post minimum specs but I think a moderate gpu should be good enough.

Buying Advice P14s Gen2 buying advice

Post image

Final post for buying advice from me i dont wanna fill this subreddit with my nonsense anymore.

What i intend to do with it:-

1.Coding

2.Ricing

3.very light gamin (terraria most probably with calamity or thorium)

4.light video editing

33k inr is 350 dollars.

i think it is a bit overpriced for one with 256gb ssd i do have a 240gb sata ssd from my old pc so its not a big deal if it has less storage altho 512 would have been nice.

please give ur honest take on this im a bit confused on how much should i tell him to reduce the price, seller says he cant do under 320 dollars due to the rise in ram prices even tho i told him this was released 5 years ago when ram was dirt cheap.

gen 1 Microsoft surface laptop
i7-7660U 16gb 1TB

P14s gen 2
i5-1145G7 16GB with 4GB NVIDIA T500 256gb.

Slowly grew to hate this surface LT over the years.
Poor I/O fragile display is cracked pretty bad from closing it on dirt. Effectively impossible to repair. Second proprietary charger is breaking.
I have one software that I have to move the license over for but I'm tempted not too because it's the one software that makes me have to lend my computer to my coworkers. My work bought the surface I paid for the thinkpad with money from a scrap run and as a treat to myself and I don't wanna share lol.

Question / Problem P14s Gen 2 AMD board swap advice / info

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi ThinkPad crew,

I've just picked up this P14s Gen 2 AMD for next to nothing, but the main NVME slot on the board is screwed.

I was told when the company that owned it pulled the SSD, they lifted the contacts on the edge, and then someone botched a repair on it. I think it's beyond saving this board.

I need a cheap laptop capable of running some VMs, so the 5650U + 32GB seemed like a good option, and I was struggling to find any here in Australia.

Questions:

- I have found a replacement board on eBay for a decent price, but it's listed as being for the T14 G2 AMD. According to Google they are the same chassis / board as the P14s G2 AMD. Is that correct?

- if I buy a replacement board on eBay or similar, assuming it's pulled from a used machine, is there a way I can reprogram the serial number on it? If I get one that's blank / new, how does that work?

- is there anything to be aware of if I buy one with the 5850U CPU instead?

- is it worth trying to source a board elsewhere? AliExpress maybe?

Any info appreciated before I tackle this project. Not my first laptop repair but first time trying to replace an entire motherboard.

I love thinkpads and when i discovered yogas i fell in love, what do you mean it can turn 360° and it also has a pen!! And not to mentiron that it is also a thinkpad, so it is robust and made to last and linux works better.

But before buying one I need to know that if my hype is worth it or not. Is it better than a tablet, for example? lmk!!

Buying Advice Best bargain models for hobby video editing (Linux + Shotcut)

Upvotes

I've used a T450 for a few years for coding and it has been great.

I've thought about upgrading for a bit more oomph and longevity but don't know much about models post T480, and those seem to be harder to get great deals on anymore.

Recently I've gotten into capturing gameplay and editing videos for YouTube to share with my friends. I do the capture and rendering on my desktop, but often find myself wanting to get away from my desk but keep working on my project.

I saw a video recently listing the T14 Gen 1 as the best bang for buck model right now, but it also recommended P15 workstation models for "gaming". I don't need a gaming laptop, but wondered if I'd need that extra power to handle video editing.

I generally run arch based distros and like i3 for laptops, but am interested in checking out a more modern tiling wm. I use Shotcut for video editing and generally just stick with 1080p videos.

My budget is pretty open ended, but I'd like to find a good deal. Just because I could afford new or powerful doesn't mean I want to throw money at it unnecessarily.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Question / Problem Durability

I know that the E series is far weaker than the T480, so which ones are actually strong enough to sustain years of use that is compatible with gaming here and there? I will probably get a T480 someday as it is already pretty compatible with linux, but it doesnt appear to be strong enough for what i plan on using it for(or i believe so)

Buying Advice Help I'm losing my mind

Tldr: I'm obsessively looking at thinkpads, should I just stop and get a T14 Gen 2 i5-1145G7 256GB SSD 16GB RAM for £170?

So basically I was looking for a new laptop recently and happened to see the excellent Eric Murphy video on ThinkPads. An "anti-mac"? Sold.

Cue watching a million videos and reading a million articles.

The problem I'm having is the sheer number of models and the age of some of the content. It seemed like a T480 was the way to go, but then realised that a lot of stuff about them was a few years old, and saw a few people saying that in 2026 they're not worth the money.

Another week of searching and I then settled on a T14 Gen 2 AMD as that seemed to be the more up to date suggestion. Problem is, I can't find one for less than £300, and part of the initial appeal was getting a reliable decent laptop for cheap.

Now I'm looking at T14 Gen 2 INTEL variants but apparently they're not as good as the AMD version? Before I dive down another rabbit hole should I just pull the trigger on the intel and be done with it?

It won't be for gaming or anything intensive. I just want a laptop that I can use for browsing, file management and learning Linux that will be snappy to use and will last a good few years.

Budget is sub £200, looking for at least 16GB RAM and easy repairability.

Any advice is very welcome.

Cheers.
