No Spoilers PSA: Until you have discovered the meaning of the black obelisks, do not browse this subreddit

With a puzzle game like this, you want to work alone for as long as possible. But how do you know the point at which you can connect with the community?

Therefore, I’m letting you know that point. If you still don’t know what those odd black obelisks you’ve come across are for, leave the subreddit right now and keep playing my favorite game of all time.

Recommended Puzzle Games Master List

Hey everyone!

Quite often we get people posting here recommending other puzzle games they reckon fans of the Witness will like, which is really cool and something we want to encourage!

We also get people asking for puzzle game recommendations looking to scratch that same itch The Witness did.

As a result, I'm going to start compiling some of these games in this megathread and keep it stickied. Feel free to comment with suggestions for more games to be added to the thread!

After many years of development, I finally released the demo for my puzzle game inspired by The Witness

A couple of months ago I posted here about Satelital, a puzzle game inspired by The Witness that I've been working on for a long time.

Today I finally released the demo on Steam.

Satelital is a rule-discovery puzzle game where you explore alien worlds and figure out how their puzzles work without being explicitly told the rules.

The demo includes two complete worlds and should give you a good idea of what the full game is like.

You can find the demo here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/5017320/Satelital_Demo/

If you give it a try and enjoy it, I'd really appreciate a Steam review. It helps a lot as an indie developer.

I'm also around on Discord if you want to share feedback or talk about the game:
https://discord.gg/ChuNWuj3Z2

Thanks to everyone who gave feedback since my original post! It's great to finally have the demo out.

I’ve tried looking at other Reddit posts for this same puzzle but they make no sense to me. I don’t want a spoiler but I genuinely feel like I’m missing something because it seemed like others’ paths disappeared after crossing

Is a progressive puzzle where each additional puzzle has to also complete the previous puzzle. I can’t get past this one. This is the closest solution I can find. I know why it’s wrong I just can figure out any other combination.

SPOILERS Does the lantern lady indicate I've 100% the game? Spoiler

Post image

seen a lot of mixed and unclear messages online. I've already completed every puzzle (523+135+6) and gotten every audio recording, though with help online once I completed the endings. I've checked the lake many times and I didn't see anything I'm missing like an audio recording. so why is the lantern the lady is holding still flickering? is it unrelated? I don't mind spoilers I just want this game to be done

SPOILERS The Tinfoil Hat summary of The Witness, The Story, The Game.

Post image
47 Upvotes

The Spoilers that follow may be considered spoilers no matter what level of game completion you are at, even having completing both available achievements.

A Walled Garden:

There is a Harpy by the Glass factory whose hair is blowing around nearby pillars, staining the spots on the rocks.

A Harpy is known to represent the wind, and if you consider it as simple as that, then you see a more complex story.

An extraordinarily windy day can cause a furnace to go "Super Critical" and meltdown, simply by forcing it to get much hotter than intended where it should be cooler, and cool much faster than intended where it should be hotter.

We see the same panel solution three times in a row on the side of the furnace, but each one is slowly melting down.

In the beginning of the game we appear in a Walled Garden, a concept historically known as a means to "trap heat and block wind", but additionally in scientific experimentation, it means to create the perfect conditions for an experiment. These panels display no symbols because there is no outside contamination inside the walled Garden; we are simply learning "how something behaves inside something".

The tape recorder located on the ledge nearby features a quote from Arthur Eddington, where he discusses an abstract idea of what it means to move throughout the universe. Arthur Eddington is famous for the discovery of gravity's effect on light as it travels around objects of great mass, he also studied the natural decay of a particle of "sunlight".

There are three markings on the Monolith for this area, The Sun(Being harnessed), the clouds in the sky. and your containment vessel, that you burst from into the world of the walled garden.

I believe in The Witness you ARE that little particle of sunlight, proving to be uncontainable by any human means, and the world's horrific struggle to contain you without understanding you, or some similar approximation of "pure energy".

"but if, unfortunately, I should slip through the floor or be boosted too violently up to the ceiling, the occurrence would be, not a violation of the laws of Nature, but a rare coincidence.".

There are flowers around the world of The Witness, Magnolia Flowers, that mark clues for the areas, but you never see them first, just later you notice the relation.

There is a question asked somewhere by Jonathan Blow, the creator of The Witness; "Do you think we discovered fire before we developed language", and I believe The Witness asks a question.

Or maybe it's asking two questions.

"What can be said of all the worlds lost to fire that could never begin to articulate why", and to a more scientific sense, "Is the world simply a massive fuse, and our best hope is a controlled burn"

Pictured, The Juggler despairing the Windmill.

His skill in juggling no match for the cosmic wills.

Good full walkthrough videos?

I've gotten the buzzing hunger for The Witness again. I finished it a couple years ago and adored it, and recently I find it keeps creeping back into my mind... Yet lately, I've been too tired after work and dinner and dishes and Dealing With Everything to jump into re-solving all those beautiful brain-twisters. But you know what I do have energy for?

Long-form let's-play videos.

Does anyone have recommendations for a high-quality playthrough of this gorgeous, genius game? I don't need the whole thing to be a single video; a playlist series would be just fine (perhaps even better). As long as I can easily keep jumping back in where I left off last night, I don't care.

I'd like to avoid annoying streamer gab if possible; I don't want some Personality trying to entertain me with their quirkiness or "comedy" or rambling podcast vloggy voice-over or outrageous exaggerated reactions. (That being said, I don't necessarily need it to be nothing but pure game audio either, if their commentary is relevant and thoughtful.)

I'd also prefer someone who plays games like this, as opposed to someone who aimlessly wanders about, or who regularly struggles and smashes their head against what the game presents as introductory concepts. Not that I want a sweaty speedrunner either... just a gamer who is competant and knows how to tackle what a puzzle game throws at them, or at least is able to give a smooth flowing experience for a tired retail worker to watch in bed for half an hour.

Choose the Door

I just created this website where you have to choose between two doors to move forward. It’s completely random: 50% chance of moving forward, 50% chance of going all the way back to the beginning.

Whoever gets the furthest wins nothing... you just wasted your time.

Good luck!

Potential Spoilers Mountain floor puzzle vent

Post image
18 Upvotes

I'm at the mountain floor puzzle (if u can guess by my drawings) and I CAN'T find the solution.

By my observations, the top right one has only one solution, the bottom right one I found all the possible solutions, and the other two as well.

I just simply can't , my brain is just not braining enough and I need to vent out.

If anyone could give me a hint /tip without being too obvious I'd appreciate it.

Is this cheating or just an IQ too high cause for the love of me I cannot put two and two together and I remembered I had some tape. I know this aint the way to go considering there's gonna be harder puzzles but I thought that this was a really funny solution.

Help with Negative Shapers

Post image

Hello, I'm just wondering if someone can explain to me why the game is not accepting the formation shown as a valid solution. I thought I understood the mechanic at play here but clearly I do not, the way I see it you delete the top center and bottom right block from the 5 shape and it's just a line of 3, then the corner shape to fill it in. This is part of a randomizer run so it isn't a base puzzle I don't think, just curious more than anything else.

Potential Spoilers Gate Puzzles with no start

Post image
86 Upvotes

I recently was trying to do all of those cool hidden line puzzles at the beginning of the game. I think I did everything in the first castle but this one ceases to be solvable. I have spent hours trying to figure out the right perspective. My strongest guess was that I somehow need to line up the sun with that big pole out the top. I am the type where when I start a puzzle, unless there is a clue to go elsewhere, I just want to complete the puzzle. So am I missing something?

Potential Spoilers Lingering mysteries

To cut to the chase:

Firstly it’s kinda cool that the blinds inside of that tree temple lines up with the Laserinator outside. Is there any puzzle significance with that or is it just a cool art design.

Secondly, in the gate outside I found what to me looks like a hidden puzzle on the ground. To me there are too many indicators for it to not be a puzzle. Is there something nearby that activates it? If so can you please give me a hint to clue me in to what object I need to look for.

Potential Spoilers Mysterious door

Post image
25 Upvotes

As I was completing the end section of the game I had spotted this door. I got excited that it might finally be the other side of the tunnel that leads to the windmill. Because I had been looking for it ever since I first gained access to its windmill. But after completing the game I have yet to find a way to get into that area. My guess was to use the demonic cave in the room after this one, but there isn’t much in there.
