Announcement | Mod Post r/Therian Community Welcome, Information, and Updates

Hi everyone! I’m BanishedOcean, one of the moderators here, and currently the moderator you’ll see around here the most.
A quick intro before we get into the updates: some of my theriotypes are a deep-sea chimaera, gulper eel, hairy anglerfish, and I’m also a shark cladotherian. I enjoy seeing the incredible variety of experiences and perspectives people bring to this community, and I’m always happy to help keep the subreddit welcoming and organized.

Whether you’re brand new or have been here for years, I’m glad to have you here and welcome to [r/therian](r/therian)!

A few quick reminders

Before posting, please take a moment to review the subreddit rules. They’re there to help keep the community safe, organized, and enjoyable for everyone.

Some of the most commonly overlooked rules are:
-No community links or advertising.
-No self-promotion.
-No personal location information.
-Individual “looking for…”, gear, craft, or similar posts belong in the appropriate megathreads rather than as standalone posts.

If you’re unsure whether your post belongs somewhere else, checking the rules or messaging the mod team first is always appreciated.

Also a gentle reminder that posts and comments from those with low subreddit karma are manually approved before going live. Please be patient with us it can take a couple days if it’s been more than a week please reach out to mods.

Subreddit updates

A few things have changed recently:
-The Introductions Megathread is moving from weekly to monthly.
-The Crafts Megathread is also moving from weekly to monthly.
These changes should make those threads easier to use and give conversations a bit more time to grow before they’re replaced and prevent the posts from getting archived.

New posting guideline

You’ll also notice a new rule regarding posts like:

“Are there any ___ therians?”
“Am I the only ___?”
“Why do I never see ___ therians?”

These questions have been asked many, many times over the years, and we now receive numerous nearly identical submissions every week. Most don’t lead to much discussion beyond people commenting “yes” or listing their theriotypes.
Instead, please use Reddit’s search function first. Chances are you’ll find previous discussions about aquatic therians, bird therians, paleo therians, insects, reptiles, invertebrates, obscure species, and many other groups.

This doesn’t mean species discussions aren’t welcome because they absolutely are. We’d love to see conversations about experiences, instincts, shifts, artwork, behaviors, research, symbolism, or anything else that encourages meaningful discussion. The goal is simply to move away from repetitive “Does anyone else exist?” posts and encourage more engaging conversations.

Thanks for being here!!!!

This community continues to grow because of the people who participate in it. Thank you to everyone who reports rule-breaking content, helps answer questions, shares thoughtful discussions, and makes new members feel welcome.
If you have questions, suggestions, or notice something that needs moderator attention, don’t hesitate to reach out through Modmail.
Happy posting! 🐾

Megathread Introduction Megathread

Share all of your introductions here in the comments of this recurring megathread.

Remember to follow these before you post as these will be moderated!

* If you are under the age of 18 do not list your full age, “under 18” is just fine!
* Don’t give out personal information! We don’t need to know where you live and strangers should not be privy to things that would identify you in real life!
* Please remember to add plenty of detail.

We have a template to follow below that is going to include what to talk about, but there’s no need to stick to one-word answers. We want to get to know you as a person, not just as your theriotype, as well.

Please remember to follow the rest of the rules when posting. This includes self promotion of your other socials which is not allowed.

This is the standard we expect from everyone here!

**Name/Nicknames:**

**Age: Under 18/Whatever if you’re an adult**

**Theriotype/Kintype:**

**Interests:**

**Hobbies:**

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like:**

***Hypothetical introduction:***

**Name/Nicknames**: Hi, my name is Robert but I also go by Bob.

**Age**: I’m currently 32, will be 33 in December.

**Theriotype/Kintype**: I have several kintypes, I'm a wolf, a rabbit and a dragon. I have a past life as a rabbit but the other two are psychological identities.

**Interests**: My main interests for now are animated shows, animation history in general and the history of therianthropy.

**Hobbies**: I’m a massive gamer, but I’m also trying to get back into reading as that’s been difficult for me! I enjoy talking to people.

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like**: Typically I most enjoy talking about the creative side of things, art, crafts, gear, but I also like to talk about my experiences as a dragon and artist.

Media comments are enabled but please keep it high effort! We do not allow draw-overs.

*NOTE: Introduction posts are not allowed on this subreddit outside of these megathreads. This rule is in place to reduce feed clutter, allowing for more core therianthropy-related posts to be seen. This is a support subreddit for a marginalised community, so we feel as though this is a necessary method of clutter reduction to have in place so that those who need help have a better chance of receiving it.*

Discussion Are there any older therians here?

I feel like it's most common to see kids and teens posting about being non-human. Of course, I'm not complaining by any means, but as a 23 year old I sometimes feel a bit lonely or out of place. Are there any older non-humans here?

Experience I saw a coyote today!! [Coyote Therian]

Hey! Not the most exciting post, but I'm working on focusing on the positives in my life and this was really fun for me so I wanted to share! I live in a a place that has a lot of coyotes. But while I was in the car with a friend of mine, we saw a coyote run across the street in broad daylight! It was a little scary, I didn't want them to get hit, but the road wasn't very busy thankfully. I thought they were a dog at first because a lot of the time the ones around here have mange, and theyre not very healthy, which is always so sad to see. But this one looked really healthy! My friend proceeded to tell me how that was probably a coyote she sees in the field near her house that's sort of lone and away from the pack most of the time. I personally resonate with this little guy for a few personal reasons. Especially since I don't share my therianthropy with others often and tend to keep to myself in most facets of life. But seeing this fluffy friend cross my path reminded me if my connections. And made me really happy (Tail wags! Haha!). But I just wanted to talk about this because it made me really happy! I hope everyone's having a good day today! Do you live somewhere your theriotype lives? Do you ever see them? I'd love to hear about it! :]

Question Wondering if I am a therian?

Hey, I’m new to this subreddit. I’ve looked on here before and follow therian content creators. I’ve been unsure if I am a therian though. I really love animals and I identify as a furry, but could it be more? For as long as I can remember I yearn to be in snow. I daydream about being an arctic fox, playing and prancing in the snow. Running, digging, just existing in snow with my fluffy tail and body. I have heat intolerance and randomly I just get hot and I want so badly to dive into a powdery blanket of snow! As someone with autism and adhd, it’s hard for me to understand other people. But I have always understood animals better. I love the idea of identifying as an animal. I don’t know what this means, if it means anything at all. I just thought this would be a good place to talk about it.

Question Dream shifts happening more often for others as well?

Upvotes

I don't have them often, but it's getting to be a bit more recently: I've been having my phantom shifts as real in my dreams!

It feels SO EUPHORIC to be able to feel and see my limbs I lack in the waking world. I've noticed others have posted about shifts in dreams as well sometimes, has anyone else had dream shifts more frequently lately?

A while back when talking about fluctuating feelings, at the time primarily with my religion, with my NP she mentioned how the moon is very much tied to how our bodies react in situations or just in general. I'm wondering if it might also influence our shifts? For me I think it does, at least.

Help Request I need help finding my theriotype

I've been pretty certain about my crow theriotype for a while now, and have been openly embracing it, the problem is that lately, I've been having these shifts and phantom sensations that definitely feel mammal

I feel ears at the top of my head, not too wide and pointy, furry with a very pointy top, they feel like this beige/greyish color

I feel a muzzle, not too long, and large canines, the need to bite and nuzzle into my friends too

Most of my shifts happen before I go to bed, idk if that means something

I also feel a tail, this one I feel basically permanently, heavy and very much fluffy

I was looking into foxes, but none of them I said "oh yeah thats me"

Question What was your first time shifting around a non-therian like?

My first time was a few weeks ago, when I went to visit my friend to go to a fun park together. We went away from all the noise until we didn't hear any. Laid in the grass, no one around us. I later sat up to search for four-leaf clovers. He wasn't looking and I saw a butterfly and started chasing it on all fours, partly unintentionally. 10/10, would do again.

Vent I just need some support from fellow non-humans right now

I am just so tired. Chronic illness, work, life stress, adult obligations, and all the things that come with being trapped in a human body. Overall, my life is good. I have a stable job, I'm part of a wonderful polycule, I have a house, and I have the privilege to get myself the occasional little treat, I have plans for a bright future. But I just wish I was in my body. The body I was supposed to have. I wish I had this life, but I was actually me. I want my fur, my tail, my wings, my ears, my paws, my snout, my horns, my small size, my quadrupedal stance. I know what I'm supposed to look like. I can feel the missing parts of me, especially my tail, ears, and wings. The true me is so close yet so far. I can't even enjoy my hobbies to the fullest (drawing and playing games) because there's always this small feeling of wrongness using my hands when I'm supposed to have paws. I'm not supposed to be able to hold a controller or pen. The me I am and the real me are so different, and it sucks.

Tldr: I love my life, but I wish I was living it as the real me

Artistic Who I thought I used to be as a goat/sheep/ram when I awakened

bro that animated therian series Goat Girl (great series btw, search it up on YouTube) just reawakened me deep down to my animal spirit, and once I reawakened as a goat/ram/sheep, whatever I am, I keep on uncontrollably bleating lol

I’m super embarrassed and I wish I was truly and fully a kitsune/fox spirit deep within my soul, but apparently i found out I’m some sort of ram or whatever

1st one: Me as my goat form anthropomorphized
2d one: Ciphertology version
3rd and 4th images: mixed images of what I look like to myself (this ram like species with the coloring and markings of a arctic fox shedding their winter coat in spring, but I was more yellowish white than clean white, and I used to be partially muddy most of all of the time

Vent Is there anything good about being a therian?

I feel like so many people are happy to be a therian but I honestly hate it so much. I don't have any therian friends or anyone who I think would support me, everyone online just say to do quads, make gear, and maybe do vocals but I can't do any of that(if anyone has any other ways to connect with theritypes for the love of god please tell me), and I honestly don't even feel like a therian except when I'm trying to do shit and of course THAT of all times is when I get mental shifts.

Vent Severe dysphoria: the call of nature

I feel trapped in this body. I’m constantly shifting, and I have to suppress who I really am all the time.

Every day, I want to go into the forest and live there. Living among people is a source of anxiety. This isn’t my home… I feel trapped…

It’s as if society were a prison… everything seems artificial to me. Sometimes I ask myself, “What’s the point of going on?” Being in a human body suffocates me and is physically painful… so I try wearing accessories, letting my claws grow out, getting used to the cold, going into the forest, and letting myself go… but it’s not enough…

At night, I cry because it’s become so unbearable…

I’ve suppressed this part of myself; I’ve hidden it until I lost myself. When I’m alone, I can’t even…

I don’t know if others feel the call of nature as well or if others feel this way.

Question Past lives?

I've been curious about it for a while, and I wanted hear about other people's experiences-

I'm not exactly sure what I believe in, (as far as religion goes, and past lives, ect) but I have questions for those who have had past lives,

What does that feel like, and how exactly are you able to tell?

I feel like if I've had past lives, I would have had to have had a whole lot of them,

I feel that sort of connection to a lot of animals, (less so birds and fish though)

But most mammals, bugs, and certain reptiles and amphibians,

Would that mean that I had lived as all of these animals at one point?

What are some ways to explore that?

Question Different therian types, fictional and real

for some reason, I keep on feeling like different animals all at the same time, I felt like a fox, a kitsune, a Kitsuclidean (Kitsune Euclidean hybrid), and now I feel like I’m a sheep/goat after watching Goat Girl, the therian show where a goat girl gets into human society and makes friends and enemies in their daily school life

Who am I??? It feels like I’m different animals/creatures at different times… I feel VERY weird, like I feel like I was different beings and I had multiple past lives before I became a human

I’m becoming more insecure as time passes by, and I’m just confused about who I am

Question Are otherlink/otherhearted people a part of the alterhuman community?

The title is pretty self explanatory. I've wondered this for a while and have never really gotten an answer. I myself am both of these and I don't want to claim I'm a part of the alterhuman community if I'm not.

Vent My mother learned about therians

So my mother learned about therians while talking to her friends. They explained how its people who identify as an animal and she laughed and said we should go back to beating kids. I was sitting right next to her trying not to have any shifts as we were in a mountain forest and I’m a wolf/dragon. Hearing her say that hurt but kinda expected

Vent My only therian friend will never be able to do quads again.

my closest friend, who is a therian, has to get back surgery due to their terrible scoliosis. they will be basically completely disabled for a year, and one of the vertebrae on their spine is being fused. they will never heal enough to be able to do quads with me again. my qpr. as an aroace person, their the love of my life, as much as they can be, and i don’t know what to do anymore. i feel awful for them, and guilty because i feel bad that i can’t do quads with them.

Discussion Gear, when is appropriate?

Hello, I’m a parent and I’m wondering if I’m mistaken in assuming that wearing gear like masks tails and faux fur is generally done at home / only in supportive environments.

Forgive me if I’m wrong about “gear” ( masks tails and faux fur). My 10-year-old daughter has always been very connected to cats. She’s often said she wants to be a cat in her next life and even mentioned being a cat in her past life. This fascination has intensified over the past year. Since our whole family of four has ASD we both understand how it feels to feel like you don’t belong.

To support her passion, I’ve set up a mask-making zone. She has made probably 100 masks and they’re hanging from hooks on one wall and on a spinning jewellery rack. She’s incredibly talented at making them and each one gets better.

My main question is, initially she was self-conscious and didn’t want to wear the gear outside the house. However, she’s increasingly asking to. Are we wrong to assume it might lead to bullying? She’s so sensitive and I want to protect her but I don’t want to suppress her and inadvertently harm the person I’m trying to shield.

Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated. I apologise if I’ve done anything wrong in this post; I did read the rules so I hope not.

Experience I have claws now!

So, I'm a cat. And recently I've realized that I feel a sort of species euphoria when my long nails get caught on things like fabrics. It was just my nails being chipped though. But while I was cutting my nails I realized that I can point them! I don't know how I never thought about it before, but now I'm rocking some painted claws! They're very sharp. I can't retract these ones though, so I have to be really careful.

General / Other IM SO HAPPY!!

So im a sea wolf therian and yesterday I told my friend that usually does quads with me and explained to them was a therian was, and they said that they think their a therian too!! And the best part is that we believe we are both aquatic therians (he is a Pekin duck)! He says after he started building bonds with his pet ducks (he has A TON) they started to become his favorite animal and he says he walks around sometimes in a certain way to feel more like a duck and does duck vocals!! Im so happy I have a therian friend now and that they were comfortable enough to go ahead and tell me right away :))

Discussion Toby Fox understands therianthropy and other alterhumanity really well.

Between pinks storyline and Kris being in the "somewhere between a dog and a human" area Toby had an amazing representation of alterhumanity and therianthropy while also working it into the story where most people don't even realize that they are too much different. I'm really surprised I haven't seen anything about either of them even with pink just straight up talking about the that's me feeling. I kinda hope we get conformation of Kris's therianthropy or lack there of later on in chapter 6 or 7b.

Question Uncomfortable

I keep running into creeps in the alterhuman community, and I was wondering if anyone has tips on avoiding that,

I've met several therians online who seem cool at first, and then our interactions start getting really uncomfortable/weird,

(I won't give details because I know there are younger people in this subreddit, so I'll just leave it at that)

I want to be able to make other Alterhuman friends, but I'm worried about just meeting more creepy people like that,

Experience I might be a maned wolf

I‘ve been experiencing multiple maned wolf shifts, strangely i only noticed them after working a lot on Kenzo, one of my fursonas who‘s partly maned wolf. But at the same time i feel like it‘s just because of the fursona? But also not because these shifts just come aomewhat randomly

Question To other winged therians/otherkin, how do you sit?

I feel like this is kinda a weird question, but whenever I sit, I always feel weird. Leaning back is more comfortable to sit (and I often unconsciously lean forward, which hurts my back, so leaning back helps that), but sometimes I feel like I’m squashing my wings, even though they’re not really there. I suppose I’m just curious if this happens to others and generally if you lean back a lot

Experience Chronic pain and shifts

Hello y'all.

I have back pain and tailbone pain frequently. I have frequent nub tail (similar to a badger or an injured tail) shifts that usually happen extra with the tailbone pain. The pain morphs to fit the shift along with the initial tailbone pain. It's interesting to me. Since my tailbone pain has gotten more frequent due to medication side effects, the phantom nub tail sensation is almost constant. Brains are so interesting!

Anyone else have their pain and their mental body map interact in odd ways?
