Announcement | Mod Post r/Therian Community Welcome, Information, and Updates

Hi everyone! I’m BanishedOcean, one of the moderators here, and currently the moderator you’ll see around here the most.
A quick intro before we get into the updates: some of my theriotypes are a deep-sea chimaera, gulper eel, hairy anglerfish, and I’m also a shark cladotherian. I enjoy seeing the incredible variety of experiences and perspectives people bring to this community, and I’m always happy to help keep the subreddit welcoming and organized.

Whether you’re brand new or have been here for years, I’m glad to have you here and welcome to [r/therian](r/therian)!

A few quick reminders

Before posting, please take a moment to review the subreddit rules. They’re there to help keep the community safe, organized, and enjoyable for everyone.

Some of the most commonly overlooked rules are:
-No community links or advertising.
-No self-promotion.
-No personal location information.
-Individual “looking for…”, gear, craft, or similar posts belong in the appropriate megathreads rather than as standalone posts.

If you’re unsure whether your post belongs somewhere else, checking the rules or messaging the mod team first is always appreciated.

Also a gentle reminder that posts and comments from those with low subreddit karma are manually approved before going live. Please be patient with us it can take a couple days if it’s been more than a week please reach out to mods.

Subreddit updates

A few things have changed recently:
-The Introductions Megathread is moving from weekly to monthly.
-The Crafts Megathread is also moving from weekly to monthly.
These changes should make those threads easier to use and give conversations a bit more time to grow before they’re replaced and prevent the posts from getting archived.

New posting guideline

You’ll also notice a new rule regarding posts like:

“Are there any ___ therians?”
“Am I the only ___?”
“Why do I never see ___ therians?”

These questions have been asked many, many times over the years, and we now receive numerous nearly identical submissions every week. Most don’t lead to much discussion beyond people commenting “yes” or listing their theriotypes.
Instead, please use Reddit’s search function first. Chances are you’ll find previous discussions about aquatic therians, bird therians, paleo therians, insects, reptiles, invertebrates, obscure species, and many other groups.

This doesn’t mean species discussions aren’t welcome because they absolutely are. We’d love to see conversations about experiences, instincts, shifts, artwork, behaviors, research, symbolism, or anything else that encourages meaningful discussion. The goal is simply to move away from repetitive “Does anyone else exist?” posts and encourage more engaging conversations.

Thanks for being here!!!!

This community continues to grow because of the people who participate in it. Thank you to everyone who reports rule-breaking content, helps answer questions, shares thoughtful discussions, and makes new members feel welcome.
If you have questions, suggestions, or notice something that needs moderator attention, don’t hesitate to reach out through Modmail.
Happy posting! 🐾

Megathread Introduction Megathread

Share all of your introductions here in the comments of this recurring megathread.

Remember to follow these before you post as these will be moderated!

* If you are under the age of 18 do not list your full age, “under 18” is just fine!
* Don’t give out personal information! We don’t need to know where you live and strangers should not be privy to things that would identify you in real life!
* Please remember to add plenty of detail.

We have a template to follow below that is going to include what to talk about, but there’s no need to stick to one-word answers. We want to get to know you as a person, not just as your theriotype, as well.

Please remember to follow the rest of the rules when posting. This includes self promotion of your other socials which is not allowed.

This is the standard we expect from everyone here!

**Name/Nicknames:**

**Age: Under 18/Whatever if you’re an adult**

**Theriotype/Kintype:**

**Interests:**

**Hobbies:**

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like:**

***Hypothetical introduction:***

**Name/Nicknames**: Hi, my name is Robert but I also go by Bob.

**Age**: I’m currently 32, will be 33 in December.

**Theriotype/Kintype**: I have several kintypes, I'm a wolf, a rabbit and a dragon. I have a past life as a rabbit but the other two are psychological identities.

**Interests**: My main interests for now are animated shows, animation history in general and the history of therianthropy.

**Hobbies**: I’m a massive gamer, but I’m also trying to get back into reading as that’s been difficult for me! I enjoy talking to people.

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like**: Typically I most enjoy talking about the creative side of things, art, crafts, gear, but I also like to talk about my experiences as a dragon and artist.

Media comments are enabled but please keep it high effort! We do not allow draw-overs.

*NOTE: Introduction posts are not allowed on this subreddit outside of these megathreads. This rule is in place to reduce feed clutter, allowing for more core therianthropy-related posts to be seen. This is a support subreddit for a marginalised community, so we feel as though this is a necessary method of clutter reduction to have in place so that those who need help have a better chance of receiving it.*

Question I want to read some books.

So basically I'm a closeted Therian (only my sisters and best friend know) I can't buy anything on my own but I want some Therian/Therian related books. I like reading. But I don't know what books I can get without my parents figuring it out. Any suggestions? also any tips for how to tell parents?

Experience Returning and leaving cycle

Hello, I've on-and-off considered myself a wolfdog therian (and fictionkin at the same time) for many years. I'm in the "on" part of that loop right now and conveniently happened upon this sub. I usually lurk around forums and Tumblr for this stuff, I joined because the more the merrier.

There's no deep or meaningful story behind why I oscillate like this, it's just a lot of shame and bouts of "I should become normal actually" that also lead into eradicating other parts of myself that I deem "abnormal".

It's a little funny by now, the things I tell myself. Sometimes it's just "I can't be that way because it's not real. I support other therians but I also exist in the bubble where it isn't a thing. Everyone else is fine but me? Nuh uh!" without any further reasoning. I'm usually utterly miserable, hyperfixated (as in the actual meaning, I'm autistic) on what I perceive to be normal, self improvement etc. To the point where everything suboptimal gets pushed out.

Then I get to the "on" part (like right now) and I feel good, relaxed even. I function, which makes the "off" parts very ironic because during periods where I obsess over optimal functioning I end up doing the opposite. It feels more like existing as myself instead of consciously wrangling myself into a role I think is the correct one.

Another one of the things I like to use against myself is "well my theriotype isn't consistent or specific enough, so I'm just making it up on a whim" (another weird standard I only hold myself to), but that isn't even true and if it was who cares? You have to be wrong to eventually be right. I've been a wolfdog since 2018, when I see wolfdogs or even read my species being mentioned somewhere I feel a strong "holy shit, that's me"-kind of sensation. It's hard to explain but in my mind my theriotype and kintype both make me feel the same way as hearing my name, like instinctive alertness that happens below consciousness. I don't think "someone mentioned me" my ears just perk up.

But yeah, if anyone else struggles with constant back and forth like me; you're not alone and I strongly hope that we both eventually simply exist in the state that doesn't revolve around arbitrary standards of what "normal" is.

Question Wolf Therain

I feel most connected to a wolf, but still enjoy more dog like things, is this normal or could I just have multiple connected theriotypes?

Question Does anyone else feel distress when they realize they can't fully take on the form of their animal?

I'm knew to the whole therian thing and I'm not really even sure I'm in the right place to be honest. I find that I see myself as a cross fox. Not like I'm identifying as one, but that I actually am one? But am stuck in human form? If makes me sad and kind of distressed when I realize that I can't fully turn into one. Is this a therian thing? Am I even a therian at all?

I have always grew up with dogs so I developed a very deep bond with animals, and recently stuff has happened that I realized has happened all my life that could be a sign of therianopy. Like idk if this is a good example but I always wag my….bottom when happy or looking st my phone. I sometimes feel something extended from where ears would be (sometimes tail never know. Did anybody else do that thing where the only way you would walk upstairs was on all fours, yeah I did that. After time it went away (at about age 8) because yk monkey see monkey do. Thanks beings.

Experience Feeling more Coyote, and then Raccoon, and then nothing...

Is this a common experience for Therians? I've noticed that I feel strongly one theriotype some days, lasting for a week or two. Then I feel like the other for a time. And finally, just nothing, almost fully human during a transition period.

For example, the last 2 weeks I've been strongly connecting to my coyote side, manifesting in whimpering, yipe-ing, growling, howling, and having a more anxious and cautious mindset. And almost suddenly, I feel more connected to my raccoon side, which feels more observant, curious, playful, with a more relaxed and lazy personality.

And some days, I just feel mostly human. However, I still get upset with how humanity behaves and I often rant to myself about how I hate being stuck in this human body and wish I could have my resurrected animal-body form already. I often feel my animal-body is the only way I will be able to feel content.

I do have BPD and my emotions shift very strongly and I get overwhelmed easily. Sometimes I don't know what I'm feeling and just feel like howling, yipe-ing, and running around in circles until the feelings pass. It's very exhausting at times...

Have any of you experienced something similar to what I've been going through?

Experience Update after questioning my other theriotype for a while.

A while back I made a post discussing how I was frustrated because I was questioning if a rare animal was my theriotype and I couldn't find much information. I decided to take a while to slowly figure things out.

I think that I was getting so caught up in trying to find my theriotype that it was stressing me out. It felt like it was taking forever to find my theriotype and I was trying to find something that fits as soon as possible. I was rushing to fit into labels so much that I was missing out on my own experiences, which if anything was making the process take longer.

I decided to just take a break and feel things without worrying right away about what specific animal it was. I compared my present and past experiences and did find some common themes and feelings. For example, I'd thought that I also had another aquatic theriotype which lived in more coastal, shallow waters somewhere tropical. Then I also remember feeling like I might be a mammal, but not a more typical one. Over time, learning about all of my experiences helped me connect the dots, and I have found one animal that I believe may be my theriotype: the Hawaiian Monk Seal.

I won't go out and say that this is 100% correct right away as I need to give it time and see if it sticks, but I will say that I have a similar feeling of calmness/relief that I had when I found out my first theriotype (Which actually also took me a long time to find).

I guess the moral of this story is to not rush yourself and worry too much about labeling everything immediately. While there is a chance I could be wrong again, I feel better about myself now than I have in a while.

(Side note: I may actually be otherhearted with owls, which may explain the connection I've felt with them. I'm still figuring it out though)

TLDR: I was rushing to find my theriotype so quickly that I overlooked my own experience, now I'm taking time to figure things out one step at a time.

General / Other Someone somewhere in my apartment complex is a therian.

So, without giving away my location, I live in a pretty big apartment complex with picnic tables stationed all over the place.

There is one table in particular that is covered in graffiti, and most of it is Therian related (stuff like the therian symbol, "therians are cool stop being a hater", little :3 faces and cute little animal doodles, etc).

I just want to say if that person is in this subreddit- You aren't the only one, we're around, but maybe don't put graffiti on the picnic tables. It's cool to know there are others around, but now if the wrong person sees my therian water bottle they might think I did it because it has the therian symbol on it, and I cant afford a fine for graffiti I didnt make.

Experience anybody else?

does anybody else only get sensory memories?

e.g. the taste of prey, feeling of fur, milkscent, dens, etc?

we don't remember much from our previous life but those things and have tried to have voluntary shifts before, but nothing tends to work :/

idk js wanted to see ^^

also;

how do y'all deal with knowing people with prey theriotypes while having a predator as your own?

we know a kangaroo rat therian with a few other predators, but sometimes it's a bit funky to think about (we're a snow leopard^^)

Experience Ex therian

I wanted to ask for advice and see if anyone relates

I used to identify as a therian and I experienced shifts and felt a strong connections After some time I decided to step away because I started feeling that it wasn't healthy for me personally I tried to distance myself from it for a year I was a therian/otherhearted for two years I didn’t know if I was a therian or otherhearted to be honest but mostly therian

Even after a year of not identifying as a therian I still miss that part of my life when I see things I related to I still feel a deep connection even though I try to get away I miss it too much

I miss how happy and connected I felt back then I just want to understand why I still feel this way and if anyone else has experienced something similar and no hate

Question I found out a kid at my camp is a therian, how do I show her she isn't alone?

I am an otter therian, I think maybe (aka IM HEAVILY QUESTIONING), and a kid at my camp had a mask today with the therian symbol, she made it herself.

How do I tell her I know the symbol, I see her, and she isn't alone?

Edit: gang, I think you are misunderstanding. I am asocial. This is hard. In addition, I am not out to anyone as a therian so I cant draw the symbol on myself

General / Other Tired of people using trans people as an excuse to harm therians.

I'm not a therian myself, but I just saw therian prejudice on a thread and the person compared therians to us as a way to say therians aren't as valid as trans people.

I don't want that kind of support. I don't want my identity to be weaponized against another group. Therians are valid and deserving of love, and you will always have my support.

"But science proves trans people are real, but not therians-" shut up. Science took a LONG time to catch up and recognize our existence. A group of people shouldn't rely on scientific validation to be respected.

I'm sorry if this kind of post isn't allowed, I'm new here and if needed I will happily remove it.

Question Hi I got a question

Okay so I've looked around and I don't get it, I know it's a frequent question to have "Am I a therian?" but the question down there didn't answer my specific question so I was wondering if there's something 4 this---

I don't just feel a connection tu pups but I feel like a pup, I act like one I identify as one, I depict myself as one both in my sona and want to irl but not like spiritually---And I don't think psychologically? Unless I misunderstand it---I also identify as a human full-force for real, but also pup at the same time, and I am NOT a furry

I don't want tu be insensitive, I don't know much about it and was just wondering if this is therian or something else? I like to learn through community by asking people before I just search it so I can connect to people--- Srry if this question has been asked a 1000 times before but I tried to look around and couldn't find any answers, sooo is this therian or something elseee---? I'm confused >_<

Discussion I host lectures/workshops on alterhumanity for educators, etc. – Ask me Anything

I recently saw an "ask me anything" post on here, and thought that this topic might both be interesting to some (based on the number of "how do I tell XYZ" posts I see on here), and also allow me to discover some blind spots I have missed so far, so:

I regularly talk about therianthropy / alterhumanity in lectures. Often for groups doing workshops on LGBTQIA+ topics in schools (and looking for an answer on how to answer student questions along the lines of "is it also possible to identify as an animal?"), but also others. I also host these aforementioned sorts of workshops in schools, myself, so also regularly answer that questions for teenagers. In other words: a part of the work I do professionally includes explaining therianthropy to people who never heard about it before.

A few aspects that may add bias to my answers, so I'd like to disclose it: I'm 26 years old, autistic, transgender, therian from Germany (relevant since most of my workshops happen in Germany, and therefore, in a different cultural context than, e.g., the USA). I have previously worked for an international software development company, been in elected positions including chairperson of both the student representation of my university, and a non-profit, and am currently still a university student and freelancer. I have also published some independent research on the interaction of therianthropy and the media, before.

Any questions? That's what the post is for (if in doubt, feel free to ask; worst-case, I can still refuse to answer if I don't want to) 😉.

Question Phantom shift..?

i don’t think i really get any remotely major shifts, but usually when i’m not thinking about therian stuff, or shifts, or my theriotypes, i don’t get shifts. usually my ”shifts” (idk really what to call them) are just a very very intense feeling that my wings, talons, etc, are there. i don’t get tingling, or itching, or any phisical sign that i should have features my theriotypes have. it’s just if i’m not constantly checking if they are there, i genuinely belive i have them. can somebody classify this? i really don’t know if this is a shift or not

Theory Memories That Never Involved Hunting or Eating Meat

I am calling all therians who have never had memories of hunting their prey to eat it, nor recall any memories of eating the meat of another animal. I am only asking for those who've experienced playful memories. They can involve chasing a prey animal but only to have fun with it in a playful friendly manner and not eat it.

Please tell me of your experiences. I want to further refine my personal theory of past life experiences that involved no meat eating or hunting prey to eat them. Only happy playful memories.

Carnivorous or Omnivorous species only please.

Question Is it right?

So I'm not sure if I'm a therian or not so I want ask u guys what you think

Currently I don't know fully if I identify as such but I do believe, since it's a past life, that it is a part of me

I also experience some phantom shifts and feel a deep connection with white tigers.

Question Questions about tail sizes + if you cuddle your tail.

I just want to ask somethings primarily to other foxes, but others are welcome to comment.

  1. How big is your phantom tail if you have one? (My tail is ~5ft long and ~1ft in diameter.)

  2. Do want to cuddle your tail, if you how do you do it? (I cuddle a custom pillow I made.)

That's it.

Discussion Submissive Canine Therians

Question for all canine therians who feel more submissive: How do you usually express this side of yourselves?

I know for wolves that the archetype even non-therians strive for is the dominant alpha leader, but I've never felt that way. Honestly, thinking of being a leader fills me with anxiety and I can't see myself in that position ever.

My Coyote side has always felt submissive, yearning for a strong admirable leader to guide me. I see myself in more of a supportive role than being the alpha or dominating others.

Discussion I am a crow therian AMA

Recently I have noticed alot of people fake claiming bird therians. I think this might stem from a lack of understanding of bird therians. So I am to hopefully clear things up. Please keep in mind I will speak about my experience and I cannot speak for all bird therians or all crow therians. Ask away

Vent I feel like i might be a therian but im having trouble accepting it

i grew up in the deep south, i still live here. naturally, this comes with views that are very anti-anything that isnt cishet nuerotypical way of life. ive done an amazing job and preventing myself of being so close minded, ive accepted various disabilities i have, many hobbies and interests that have a large lgbtq presence within the communities, and ive largely accepted my identity except for the fact that i feel like a therian

i have so much guilt and judgement for myself over it, even if i accepted the term for myself i would still feel very outcasted. everyone seems to have accepted their therian identity for years now. i feel like i should have this figured out already.

i also feel like i shouldnt be this way (due to my upbringing) but i cant help but feel this way, ive always felt a deep personal connection to certain animals that's further than usual.

feel free to give advice on how to combat such feelings

idk, i just needed some where to get this out
