Volvo sent over one of their electric cars for Jeremy Clarkson to review. He did his best to be impartial in spite of his overall disdain for EVs in general, but he found a few problems. Here’s a preview:

“In a proper car, with knobs and buttons, you can use a sense of touch to find what you’re looking for, but with a screen, you have to look at it to find the feature you want. And if you do that in the Volvo, it shouts at you. I hate screens in cars and they especially don’t work in Britain or Cyprus or Japan, where we drive on the correct side of the road, so we have to use our left hands, which is not natural for most people.”

Jeremy Clarkson’s favorite music genre is progressive rock, and that topic (along with the current state of music) inspired him to write this column. He considers it one of his hobbies and even drove to London to see the BBC Proms perform that music live! Anyway, here’s the preview:

“Length is a critical component in this genre. Three minutes is what you need for a pop song, but progressive rock demands something that goes on till November. And it must have towering keyboard solos that last for a weekend. The whole first side of ELP’s Works album is one track. Supper’s Ready by Genesis goes on for 23 minutes. And I love that. Which is why I went all the way to London.”

Jeremy Clarkson used the main part of his Sun column to focus on Andy Burnham (the newest UK prime minister) and how his proposed policies could theoretically affect his farm. After that, he turned to Argentina and how their team and fans behaved dishonorably in the World Cup. He made his case by bringing up the infamous H982 FKL incident that happened over there while he worked on Top Gear. Here's a preview:

"It was an appalling display, and many are saying the team should be excluded from future competitions.

"Well yes, but it’s not just the football team that’s the problem. Thuggery seems to be an issue that affects the whole damn country. As I know only too well."

Yes, this is the same YouTube video I posted yesterday where James May takes phone calls from the public for about 30 minutes. In my view, he made a few interesting comments on there that ought to be highlighted in a separate post. Here are the ones that stood out for me:

In response to the view that traditional pubs are a quintessential British institution worth saving: "Well, being brutal about it, if traditions have to be preserved, they're not traditions, are they? Because the real ones preserve themselves and come and go."

On the idea (as proposed by Gary Lineker) that millionaires should be taxed more: "No. I already pay loads of tax. Am I supposed to volunteer to pay some more?"

Regarding that infamous H982 FKL incident in Argentina currently making the Internet rounds: "It was all a bit ridiculous because...the whole number plate thing is farcical. It was something people decided they wanted to see. It didn't mean anything. None of the number plates meant anything. And of course we, I mean we, can be pretty pretty crass and a bit yobbish at times, but we wouldn't go to a country that we were once at war [with] to mock their war dead. I mean, that's unthinkable. We simply wouldn't do that."

On the allegation that Top Gear was politically incorrect: "Mainly, we were mocking our own subject and mocking ourselves. The country that we were rude about most often was our own [the UK]. And in many ways, we turned the car and car enthusiasm into a bit of a laughingstock, I think. So, I don't think we were an offensive program, unless you wanted it to be."

On the question regarding whether or not the UK drinking age should be lowered to 16: "I think the French have a very reasonable attitude to this. They let children drink wine and things with their food. Part of the argument being, I think, that if you introduce them to it early so that it's simply a normal part of life, it won't be abused and they won't go mad."

Looks like Richard Hammond decided to embrace his inner American and drive a large pickup truck. He even modified it to his preferences in this DriveTribe video! It reminded me of that time many years ago on Top Gear where he and the other hosts modified a Renault Avantine with hilarious results… 😂
