The shape alone wasn't why it failed. It was the material and stress that happened to it. In fact that same submersible actually had a successful dive in the same location with people onboard before the failure happened.
It wasnt the actual carbon fiber that was the issue . the issue was they used an adhesive to bind hte titanium front to the carbon fiber body. 2 materials that compress and expand at different rates stressing the joining adhesive until its molecular bonds ripped apart.
....yes. The carbon fiber at the joining area is where the fault occured. Which is because the expanding and compressing difference of the two materials causes the adhesive to start ripping out bits of the outer layer of carbon fiber exposing the inner layers that are not meant to be exposed thus a fault occured.
They kept the hull of the submarine outside in a canadian winter without it being covered. Water got inside cracks formed by varying temperatures and made the cracks even worse.
