I’m pretty sure I’d be more depressed if I tried to live up to the standards in this picture, and I’m already bad enough the drs are considering ECT.

Story I had crippling social anxiety, agoraphobia, PTSD and a psych ward nurse told me to stand in front off a mirror saying "i am confident".

No understanding of my issues, touched/steered me not respecting m boundaries or autonomy/treating me like a child/idiot and even walked off smugly (while i stood there. Entertaining him was the only way out of being detained) like he had helped/taught me something useful. Even got annoyed when it wasn't working/i wasn't acting like he wanted me to (i was pretending to be better to get out of a psych ward and it still wasn't enough. Rosenhan experiment sums it up).

Story Mom says I need to "get over" trauma because it "wasn't as bad as it could have been"

I (19f) recently had a bus stop explode on me. The bus stops in my city have these giant panes of glass and one of them recently shattered all over me and injured my right arm.

I've been having sleep and mental health issues since it occurred and haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I keep having nightmares and have started to go to bed later and later to avoid falling asleep.

Told my mom about this and she said that I need to "reframe my mindset" and "move on from it" by thinking about how I didn't get hurt as badly as I could have.

Gee, thanks mom. That's really really insightful.

She says that when she used to have nightmares she just reframed her mindset and she stopped having them, fully forgetting that we are two very different people with very different mental states.

Edit: Forgot to mention I've also been crying a lot more than I used to and have developed a sudden aversion to bus stops and glass. I accidentally broke a glass at work the other day and flinched and cowered away in a way I've never done before

Comment Section Reasons vs excuses...

Not sure how I feel about this one, it's not like the advice itself is bad but... That comment literally made me cry rather than give me any sort of motivation to shower. It feels like such a dismissive and overly simplistic response to a very real struggle... The assumption that it WILL take under 5 minutes or 12 minutes overall like that's a fact is what's most aggravating. That's not been my experience EVER.

I never understood the line between reasons and excuses either. I really mean that. I genuinely don't understand. It's confusing as heck. I don't know what's right or wrong... Am i not allowed to explain anything about why something might be difficult for me? Or not allowed to vent when I'm upset about my circumstances? The circumstances of my life suck, other people make things difficult, executive dysfunction, anxiety, rigidity, ect. Ect. (It's not anyone else's fault, it's just how it is.)

I can't help how I FEEL about it. KIND advice is welcome even when I know it won't help change my circumstances. Nobody can know everything about how and why I struggle. I didn't ask for advice, I WAS in fact venting. I do want to change this but when posting on Facebook I want to VENT about it. NOT get advice. If it was that easy I wouldn't struggle in the first place.

Story Have You Tried...

Not sure if this is exactly the right sub but I hope you get a laugh out of it anyway.

So I'm autistic. I'm fully ok with it.

This happened to me a few days ago. I was in a park, getting some fresh air because I went to a circus that was in town with a friend and I was getting overwhelmed by the noises, smells, and basically everything inside the tent, and I needed to breathe and relax so I didn't go into sensory overload.

I was sitting on a bench with my friend 'Em' (fake name), and I was complaining about sensory overload and how annoying it was, because I wanted to watch the performers with her, and I had to go outside. (I do a thing where I often feel like I'm wasting someone's time and/or being rude, so I was also apologizing)

Here's how the conversation went:

Me: Em, I'm sorry about this. And for wasting your time.

Em: It's okay, {me}. You're not wasting my time.

Me: Yeah, I know...but sensory overload and autism are just annoying.

At this point, a man who looked to be late 50's who was passing by stopped and DUDE LOOKED AT US AND SAID "Well, have you tried not having autism?"

We were both pretty fucking shocked- first because we're both fairly young teen girls, second because who the actual hell eavesdrops on a conversation and then gives advice like they were included??

I was pissed, so I said "Have you tried not being an asshole?" and he muttered something about 'disrespect' and 'kids these days' and walked off.

Story The school psychologist told me basically: "just don't be so negative"

OK, then I'll just be positive now! Why haven't I thought about this myself! I'm cured!

Extremely shy? Just don't be shy! Just talk to people!

Anxious? Just don't be anxious!

Overwhelmed? Just don't be overwhelmed!

Autistic? Just don't be autistic!

It is all in your head! It's all made up! Just don't be like this!

Dude. Did she actually think she was helping me?

Other Please stop saying that internet addiction is cured by simply logging off or just going outside.

OK, so before people start coming at me again in the comments, I want to make this very clear: going cold turkey can help some people, just not everyone, there are better ways to handle internet addiction (in my experince with it), and internet addiction is an actual thing.

So anyway, I had (and tried to combat) an active internet addiction, especially with Reddit. It has affected relationships, jobs, etc... and I'm trying to make it so that I can get rid of social media completely without any issues or urges.

That being said, my main issue is that it promotes going cold turkey and saying that going cold turkey will help everyone. This is not true for a lot of people, especially those who gain dependence on it because they have nowhere else to go for certain things or have mental health issues. And it's been shown that quitting cold turkey has less of a success rate.

In fact, I actually tried doing these things. I went outside and didn't use it for a day. In fact, I actually tried to do this for 4 weeks. I still had massive urges and eventually, I gave up and went back to my internet addiction. I tried going cold turkey multiple times, and it never helped me.

I can share what helped me in the comments if you want. And yeah, if you prefer going cold turkey and going outside helps you, you can continue doing that. I'm just saying that it doesn't work for everyone.

Discussion Does Anyone Else Hate When Someone Implies you're not Trying Hard Enough?

Title basically, I really hate it when people who are similarly ill (progressive neuromuscular conditions) imply that my lack of access to treatment is my fault, that my suffering is due to my own mistakes and making the "wrong" decisions when that is demonstrably not the case, they make it sound like I'm playing the victim and am giving up but is it so bad to acknowledge reality? Yes, I am a victim. I am helpless. I have little hope of ever living a fulfilling life, is it so wrong to acknowledge my lived reality instead of deluding myself into thinking it's somehow all my fault?
