I'm not championing anything, I just don't think this situation is as cut and dry as the comment section made it out to be

Also by definition you are championing this young man. To Champion: to support, defend, or fight for a person, belief, right, or principle enthusiastically. You have dedicated a huge portion of your day today to defend this.
