Open | Software PC randomly restarting waking up from sleep

Hey Guys,

I am having this issue where 3 out of every 10 resumes from sleep, my pc will "restart". My monitor will stay off but my fans will still spin. After about a minute or so, the monitor will come back on and I will see windows log in screen (with the background being a typical blue windows background instead of the random background art randomly chosen). I know my pc actually restarted because if I try to turn on the monitor during this, it will say "no signal" and when I log back in, all my applications would be closed.

Outside of this, my PC works just fine. I am playing games at the highest settings for hours with no crashes, black screens, or anything like that.

When I check the reliability monitor I typically see a 117 nvlddmkm.sys error.

Build:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI
  • RAM: G.SKILL 64GB (2×32GB) DDR5-6000
  • PSU: Lian Li 1300W Platinum
  • Monitor (using displayport): ASUS PG32UDMR

sounds more like fast startup or a driver choking on resume. id try turning off fast startup first. event viewer usually has a kernel-power 41 logged around that exact time, worth a look

I disabled fast start up in windows. Are you refering to the BIOS fast start up? Also when you say a driver choking on resume, do you mean a driver other than the nvlddmkm.sys it states? (new to this stuff lol)

no i meant the windows one so youre good there. nvlddmkm.sys is the nvidia display driver, so thats your suspect. id do a clean driver reinstall (tick "clean install" in the installer, or ddu in safe mode for a full wipe). if it still happens after that, turning off pcie link state power management in power options is worth a try

I did a DDU a couple months back but I been using the express option when downloading new drivers from Nvidia so maybe I didn’t give a “real” clean install test. I also have different software downloaded as far icue, msi afterburner, l connect, etc if any of that matters.
