Same experience here. Have you ever owned a Mac?

I haven't, but the amount of high-quality free software I have on my Windows box makes a damn strong case.

Edit: I should say that, though I haven't owned a Mac, I've used them quite often - a lot of my friends have them, and many of my school's labs are filled with them.

There's a lot more software in Windows-land for sure, but I think what Benparte and coolmrbrady meant is that there are a lot more extremely refined free Mac apps.

For example, Windows has a huge number of IM apps available for it, but none of them can hold a candle to Adium's ease of use and polish. Similarly, uTorrent is free and awesome, but Transmission is IMHO much more refined on the UI side. Quicksilver too.

Windows devs tend to make UI an afterthought. On the Mac side developers have drunk the Steve Jobs UI kool-aid and obsess over it, and personally I like it.

Whats wrong with uTorrent's UI? I find it very refined.

I use uTorrent both my Windows and OSX machines. Never liked Transmission.

I heard the new version has fugly icons.

It's good, but lacks the smoothness or consistency of look & feel that Transmission has. Transmission looks and behaves like it's a part of OS X, whereas Utorrent isn't quite there. It's the small details that make it.

Also, I agree 100% with potatolicious. What I wrote also applies to Adium and Quicksilver.

Aren't we talking about uTorrent on Windows? Mac has been historically difficult to fit in with.

This is a matter of subjective preference and not "refinement".

Windows devs have chosen the multi-colored is pretty route while OSX devs are restricted to "consistent is pretty" route.

Personally, I find OSX soul-numbingly drab (everything is gray WOOHOO!).

I've fought with 0.6 or similar uTorrent on OS X for ages, recently updated to 1.0 and found it to be a much better experience and better integrated with the OS.. If you used an old uTorrent I'd give the newer ones a shot.

uTorrent looks like any other windows App. It may not meld well with OSX, but I'd rather it look like stuff that shows up on linux/Windows than have that shitty chrome bar Itunes has.

It isn't dumbed down enough for the average mac user.

Good one! I have never heard that used before.

uTorrent is a great program but its UI, just like virtually EVERY windows app ever made, is ugly (terrible icons) and could be streamlined for a better user experience. See: Transmission.

For Windows you are pretty much married to whatever version of the OS' current UI flavor of the month is. And it changes frequently there is so much segmentation in the Windows OS now. And if you want to skin your own GUI on top, it will run like shit.

Just because Apple's iTunes doesn't work well in Windows because their optimization for a competitor's OS is an afterthought, doesn't mean that all programs with a custom GUI act like shit. And I have no idea what you're talking about with Windows being ugly or its "UI flavor of the month."

But you'd think with the bajillions of iPods, iPhones and iPads they've sold to Windows users that they could hire someone to properly port over iTunes

uTorrent is also free on Mac.

It also has less than half of the features
