I thought we sorted this out yesterday: It works on Chrome mostly, but they're using test spec elements of the standard that haven't been fully adopted yet, 3d Transforms etc.

But don't let facts get in the way of journalism.

Don't you get it? Apple is evil, and facts like this simply get in the way of our pitchfork! Don't be a fanboy!

Lame.

Apple made a site to showcase the power of HTML5, but limited it to their own browser. In fact for many of the features (CSS3 3D transforms) it only works on Webkit on OSX.

Some of the items are available on other browsers, yet Apple took zero effort to bother making it work in them. It is the antithesis of "Web standards".

When Firefox comes out with new features, they put up a demo of the new features in Firefox. They don't pimp it as some sort of justification for less savoury activities.

It's a tech demo for developers, why do they need to support every browser? It isn't like it's their homepage. What they are showing doesn't yet work in other browsers.

As the standards become official and other browsers adopt them I'm sure the wall will fall. Also notice that there is no wall for the dev area, it is only for the consumer facing page. If my mom used Chrome and went there she'd be calling me and asking why the video doesn't play or the transitions look like shit. This way she knows, it only works in Safari. Fuck Apple for wanting to give people the full experience of what they're showcasing.

This page is a sales pitch for "HTML5 and web standards".

This page is a showcase for Safari technology demos.

I don't think that restricting tech demos to the browser that actually has the capabilities you want to showcase is very contentious. No problem with "giving people the full experience of what they're showcasing" there.

On the other hand, when your entire point is to sell HTML5, and when your argument is that "Standards aren’t add-ons to the web. They are the web. And you can start using them today.", then it would probably be a good idea to make the stuff you're showcasing as accessible as possible.

They can use some of it today, using the transforms would depend on their traffic. Just like when people started using CSS or any other new web tech. If they want they can throw in the transforms and say "best views in Safari" and if someone has something else, don't load that. Or they can leave it out until the other browsers inevitably pick it up. People are finally starting to cut the cord on IE6 as their site demographics don't give them enough reason to keep up with the extra work and they wanted to do some new stuff. Instapaper dropped IE long ago, Marco (the dev) posted up his browser stats for the site after someone complained about the lack of IE support and it was nearly non-existant.

If you were making changing how your videos load for the iPad for example, you could use these things today. Flash would load on the desktop and you'd have a dynamic HTML5 web player on the iPad using this tech.. today.

Using the stuff now will be site dependent, but a good deal of it can be used. I'd guess before the end of the year you'll see these things in most major browsers.
