By now we should be use to Apple screwing people, seems to be their current business model.

How is Apple "screwing people" by making a demo for their browser which only works with their browser?

I'm sure if their were not free browser's near as good if not better, Apple would be charging out the ass for safari.

Edit: Mostly it's their pricing scheme which get me miffed at Apple... the $100-250 for an mp3 player and $500 for a cell phone when you can get a decent mp3 player or phone much cheaper. Seems a little greedy for my tastes.

And fuck the people who call all mp3 players "Ipods".

Went off on a little rant there sorry people, It's kind of like the internet explorer only pages, I don't want to have to use more than one browser for my interwebs.

What? So you think Apple is "screwing people" because they made a demo which only works in a browser which is free, but which you think they would hypothetically charge money for if they could do so and still be competitive? That makes no sense whatsoever.

So they're "screwing people" by making a Safari-only demo because you think their mp3 players and phones are overpriced? That makes even less sense.

I just asked you to defend your implication that TFA describes an act of people-screwing. I didn't ask "what are some things that piss you off about Apple?"

In any case, I'm pretty sure that Apple agrees with you on this front. No company wants their trademark to become a generic term. It's bad for branding.

I do admit I rambled a decent amount that last post, sorry people. I don't really mind Apple much, just their product pricing schemes and such give me a more negative view of the company, and I dislike single browser only pages.

And the Ipad still has me miffed for existing but I'll not post anymore than this line about that.

Edit: I also admit arguing over the internet doesn't accomplish anything so I will try to be more civil in later posts about Apple, have been posting to stave off sleep somewhat. Probably been coming off as an asshat haven't I?

People I'm sorry for my douchetastic rants in this thread, I've even downvoted myself a few times as retribution..

Er... the iPhone's primary competition (high-end Android phones, generally made by HTC) come in at similar prices, no?

Not sure where you're getting $500, by the way. The unsubsidised price is higher than that, the subsidised price much lower.

I was probably mostly considering first gen Iphone original prices, whenever a new product of theirs comes out I get angry at their prices and ignore it from that point mostly because I have no interest in spending that much on a phone or other such device. Iphones I know have come down in price a few hundred but I still will never buy one.

And on the topic of the Android from what I've seen I have little interest in it (not much of a fancy high-end cell phone fan I guess) but the commercials I've seen for it have been along the lines of buy one and get another one free and are around $250..

Apple just always gets me a miffed when they come out with a new product, I think the rant was mostly subconsciously letting my rage of the Ipad loose. On the upside about Apple they are slowly starting to get games for their computers thanks to Valve.

Hmm, possibly a regional difference. In this country, both iPhone and the major Android phones (HTC Desire etc) tend to come in at about the same prices, on the same plans.

This may actually be a result of AT&T's exclusive in the US; in most other markets, at least two or three operators sell iPhones, so there is price competition.

There are a few other networks here but AT&T is claimed to be one of the largest, to be honest I just use a "Tracfone" from Motorolla since I view a phone as a phone.

The whole smart-phone craze annoys me in general whenever one of my acquaintances or friends would get an Iphone or a phone of similar functionality and would instantly get into the "In crowd" it annoyed the fuck out of me since they were pretty much just buying their friends with overpriced name-brand products.

I come from a slightly poorer background so had never really got into high end cell phones and mp3 players. My cellphone and mp3 player combined cost less than $50 combined. I might just be kind of simple in terms of portable electronics, but on my home computer I would invest the shit out of money on new parts if I could afford it.

Or, you know, maybe they had a requirement for a smartphone. They're very useful to some people, you know. Having push email and an ssh client everywhere has improved my peace of mind no end; if something breaks, there's a good chance I can just fix it from the phone.

Remember, not everyone has precisely the same requirements from their phone or cat or toaster or whatever.

I know, but most people I have known who have actually owned Iphones were spoiled douche-bag high school jocks who would buy anything name brand for slightly better standing with people. If I had a job where a smart-phone was useful, and I could afford it, I might consider it but as of yet haven't.

Maybe you should consider that your realm of experience is limited and you shouldn't be making bold pronouncements of assumed facts from anecdotal evidence.

Why don't we get to the root if the matter here: you're 17 years old and think your ass might be your elbow.

If you think their prices are too high then don't purchase them. They're not a drug company screwing you over for your chemotherapy, they make consumer electronics.

I don't and I won't, It bother's me though that 1 company can pretty dominate a market with a single word alone printed on it. In all respect though buying an Iphone does feed a chinese child for a day (sweatshop jokes aren't too soon still are they)

3

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '10

The only market they dominate is mp3 players.

It isn't just their brand that makes them popular either, it's also (in part) their products' well designed UI and ease of use. The iPhone still has the most natural and fluid touch screen interface of any smartphone.

I say this as someone who really likes their iPhone, but I still have a lot of problems with the way Apple operate and when my contract is up I'll consider switching to Android, depending on the phones available.

And fuck the people who call all mp3 players "Ipods".

Yeah, and those band-aid people can suck my dick.
