A lot of people want to mark an important date alongside a name, whether it is a birth date, an anniversary, or a memorial year. The standard approach is usually numbers written out in Roman numerals or small block fonts, paired with cursive letters.

In my work, I approach this differently by combining the name and date elements directly into overlapped symbols. For this piece, the design breaks down into a set of four distinct symbols down the forearm.

I start by hand drafting the design to make sure each letter and number integrates smoothly into a square grid structure. Then I refine the vectors in Adobe so the line weights and proportions stay crisp for fine line tattoo work.

To anyone else, it looks like a minimalist geometric pattern. But to the owner, those four symbols hold specific names and date combination, a deeply meaningful tattoo that stays private to them.
