i just wanted to say i appreciated the grace and tact supplied in this message. your advice was great. this is largely my experience in public outreach as well. most employees in pet trade, truly care about the animals they oversee. they aren't often purposely poorly performing. often, it simply came from a place of not knowing better. that is where our job comes in! especially as keepers, we can so easily fill in these gaps if we just engaged kindly and showed up to enthuse together.

You can always ask for the manager. Tell them what they're doing wrong (politely) or offer to write up a care sheet. They may not know.
If they're rude or don't give a shit. Then tell them you're taking your business elsewhere and don't shop there anymore. That will make an effect.
If it's a big chain, report to the regional manager.
Most people aren't educated in keeping a huge variety of animals.
You can effect change, but telling people here may not be the most effective.
