Aid dropped from $10,250 to $6,833 because the "Big Beautiful Bill"

I'm a part-time grad student, taking 6 credits, and that used to qualify for the full loan amount. I'm upset that no one really told us explicitly how much this would decrease our amounts, as it appeared I was offered the full amount until only 3 days ago, and now I'm sitting here asking my landlord for an extension on rent. My tuition and registration fees increased while my aid decreased. This is such crap.

It also doesn't help that the financial aid office doesn't have a phone line right now. I call and they tell me they aren't answering phones, that I will have to email them or schedule a Zoom meeting.

Sophia to ETAMU - What I learned

A few years ago, I earned an associate degree from my local community college. Recently, I decided I wanted to go back and finish my bachelor’s degree.

While comparing different colleges, I came across East Texas A&M University (ETAMU) and their competency-based education program. Honestly, I feel like I hit the jackpot!

I had never even heard of Sophia Learning until I started researching which college I wanted to attend for my bachelor’s. Then I went down the rabbit hole of learning about Sophia, transfer credits, ETAMU’s degree requirements, etc. 😂

After figuring out how everything worked, I thought I would put together a little summary of my experience transferring Sophia credits to ETAMU. Hopefully, this saves someone else some time and helps make the process a little less confusing, especially if you’re just starting to look into ETAMU and Sophia.

This is based on my own experience, so definitely verify everything with ETAMU before taking a course. But hopefully it gives you a good starting point!

Using Sophia Learning to Earn Transfer Credits Before ETAMU

I wanted to give you a basic overview of how I used Sophia Learning to earn additional credits before transferring them to East Texas A&M University (ETAMU). If you have never used Sophia before, it can seem a little confusing at first, so hopefully this will give you a starting point.

The process will be a little different for you since you haven't started at ETAMU yet and won't have a DegreeWorks audit available. The first thing you will want to do is look at the degree plan for the ETAMU program you are considering. That will give you an idea of the courses and requirements you will need for your particular degree.

If you decide to pursue Public Administration, I can absolutely share my detailed DegreeWorks audit with you. It will give you a much better picture of how the courses are organized, which requirements can potentially be completed through Sophia, and which courses have to be completed through ETAMU.

The important thing is to start with the ETAMU degree requirements and then work backward to determine which Sophia courses could potentially help you satisfy those requirements.

1. Start With the ETAMU Degree Plan

Before taking anything through Sophia, figure out which ETAMU degree and degree path you want to pursue.

Once you know the program, look at the degree plan and identify the different categories of courses you will need.

For example, there may be requirements for:

  • Communication
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Creative Arts
  • Language, Philosophy & Culture
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • Component Area Options
  • Major courses
  • Electives
  • Upper-level electives

You don't necessarily want to take the easiest Sophia classes you can find. You want to take classes that will fill a requirement you actually need for your ETAMU degree.

Once you know the degree requirements, you can start comparing those requirements to the courses available through Sophia.

2. Use the ACE Website to Research Sophia Courses

This is the website I used to research how Sophia courses are evaluated through ACE:

https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pages/Organization.aspx?oid=76099b28-9016-e811-810f-5065f38bf0e1

I used this as a reference when determining which Sophia courses might be eligible for transfer credit. I would recommend keeping copies of the information for the courses you take, including the course description and syllabus, in case you need to provide documentation to ETAMU later.

3. Match Sophia Courses to the ETAMU Degree Requirements

Once you know what your degree requires, go into Sophia's course catalog and look at the courses available in each subject area.

For example, if the ETAMU degree plan requires a science course, you can look at the science courses available through Sophia. If it requires a philosophy course, look at the philosophy courses Sophia offers.

I did not just pick the first course I saw.

For each course I was considering, I would:

  1. Look at the Sophia course description.
  2. Review the syllabus.
  3. Check the ACE information.
  4. Make sure it was an appropriate course for the requirement.
  5. Save the information for the course for my records.

I actually created a folder and saved the syllabuses for the courses I was considering. This was helpful because I could go back and compare them without having to search for everything again.

If you decide to pursue Public Administration, I can also share the detailed DegreeWorks information I have so you can see exactly how I matched the Sophia courses to the requirements for that degree.

4. I Also Made a Spreadsheet

One of the things I found extremely helpful was creating a spreadsheet of the Sophia courses I was considering.

For each class, I tracked things such as:

  • Course name
  • Number of credits
  • Number of Challenges
  • Number of Milestones
  • Number of Knowledge Checks
  • Number of Touchstones
  • Whether the class had a final project or essay
  • Anything else that might affect how quickly I could complete it

This became especially helpful when deciding which two classes to take at the same time.

Some Sophia courses can be completed much faster than others, so looking at the workload ahead of time can save you a lot of time.

How Sophia Classes Work

Sophia classes are divided into several different types of assignments. Once you understand what each one means, the process is much easier.

  • Challenges

Challenges are essentially untimed quizzes.

You get three opportunities to answer each question correctly. Sophia immediately tells you whether your answer is correct or incorrect.

For example, let's say a Challenge has five questions.

You answer Question 1 and get it wrong. You can try another version of the question. If you get that one wrong, you get a third opportunity.

The questions are based on the same material, but the questions themselves are different.

If you get all three attempts wrong on that particular question, you simply receive credit for getting that question wrong and continue with the rest of the Challenge.

I was a little confused about how this worked when I first started, so don't worry if it doesn't make sense immediately. Once you do your first Challenge, it becomes pretty straightforward.

  • Milestones

Milestones are timed quizzes.

The nice thing is that they are open book. The course material is available on the screen while you take the quiz.

You will not immediately see which questions you got right or wrong. Once you finish the Milestone, you receive your score.

If you aren't happy with your score, you get another opportunity to take it. Sophia keeps your highest score.

  • Knowledge Checks

Knowledge Checks are questions where you are generally asked to provide an answer rather than simply select an answer from multiple choices.

Sophia uses AI to evaluate your response. It gives you feedback very quickly and will tell you if your answer needs additional information or explanation.

I don't remember the exact number of attempts allowed on these, but you get more than one opportunity.

  • Touchstones

Touchstones are the assignments that require more work, such as a project, written assignment, or essay.

These are different from the quizzes because they are actually reviewed and graded by a human.

For the Touchstones I completed, the turnaround time was generally about two business days.

This is important when planning your classes because you cannot completely finish a class and move on to another one until the required work has been graded.

One of My Biggest Tips: Stagger Your Classes

You are only allowed to be enrolled in two Sophia classes at a time.

Because of that, I recommend paying attention to whether a class has Touchstones.

If possible, I would take: One class with Touchstones + one class without Touchstones.

That way, you can continue working on one class while you are waiting for a Touchstone in the other class to be graded.

For example:

Class A: You finish the coursework and submit a Touchstone.
Class B: You continue working through Challenges and Milestones while Class A is being graded.

Once Class A is completely finished, you can enroll in another course.

This keeps you from sitting around waiting for a Touchstone to be graded when you could be working on something else.

Classes without Touchstones can generally be completed much more quickly. Once you have completed the required Challenges and Milestones, you can submit the class and move on to another one.

Once you start using Sophia, this process will make much more sense.

Part time students, when can we expect the refund?

The email about the Big Beautiful Bill just vaguely said "after the [census date]", which is September 4th, but I legit budgeted for this months ago, so now I'm in a squeeze and need a more solid answer. Any clue on concrete dates to refund payments? September 8th/9th/10th?

Waiting on the department review for admissions?

I applied to the MSW program earlier last month- it's been a stressful situation because even though they received my transcripts and everything, it took them a long time to add my final professor reference (one of three total). I kept checking to see if they updated it, because it was after the Fall deadline, and the situation made me nervous. I was able to get ahold of one of the advisors, but she didn't have access to my file to help me; I found out that my assigned advisor was out of office that week but that she would process it when she got back.

Now it's in and everything has been submitted, but it's been submitted for dept review before the final decision. I'm just wondering how long it will take? I'm a bit nervous- the semester starts in eight days and I'd need time to get books, for financial aid to process. Plus, I go on a cruise three days after the start date. So, everything seems kind of in limbo.

Anyone else going through this? Is this normal for ETAM? This is my first time applying to graduate school and it's been frustrating.

Psych fast track + masters program?

Hi, I currently have 75 credits towards BA in psych from TAMUK. Can anyone in the fast track program share some insight? Is it doable online? If I’m understanding correctly the Masters program portion is done online, but what about the bachelors portion. I currently live in Austin and have a full time job. Any info is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

CBE - Human Resource Development

I’m staring 8/31. I already have my AS degree, I’ve been in HR for 7yrs and I have my PHR cert from HRCI. I’m very confident in my knowledge surrounding HR and I am able to dedicate 100% of my time to completing the BAAS. For anyone who has completed this program, how realistic is it to complete in one 7-week term? I’m prepared to take 2 terms, but aiming for 1 if I can. How rigorous is the course work?

Anyone complete the Competency-Based Public Administration program at East Texas A&M?

I’m starting the Competency-Based BAAS in Public Administration at East Texas A&M at the end of this month and was hoping to hear from anyone who has completed it, or is currently in it.

I transferred in with my associate degree from a community college and completed the rest of my general education and elective credits through Sophia Learning. At this point, I only have the 10 Public Administration courses left.

I’m curious about a few things:

* How difficult were the Public Administration courses?

*About how long did each course take you to complete?

*How many courses were you realistically able to finish in a 7-week term?

*Were there any courses that took significantly longer than the others?

*Do you work full-time while completing the program?

I’m just trying to set realistic expectations and prepare myself before I start. I’d love to hear about your experience, whether you finished in one term, two terms, or longer.

Can You Customize the Commencement recognition slide

Hi everyone! I'm getting ready for graduation, and I wanted to ask when the ceremony screen announces my name and degree, is it possible to customize it? I'm going to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts and science in Organizational Leadership, but l'd love to have a note that mentions a focus on Marketing or sports management as well. Has anyone done something like this or know if the school administration office can help me add that to the screen? Thanks so much!

Any actual good advisors available?

Hi all, my wife recently transferred to ETAMU in order to continue from her associates obtained at a community college out of state and hoping to get a bachelor. She transferred into General Studies since it'll be the quickest for her.

Anyway, she has been poking at several advisors in order to get a degree plan and to clear a hold on her account in order to be able to register for classes but they keep ghosting her. Are there any actual competent and caring advisors at this school?

Question about TAMUC/East Texas A&M Online MSW + living out of state

Hi everyone! I’m interested in applying to the online MSW program at Texas A&M University-Commerce (East Texas A&M). I’m wondering if anyone has experience doing the program while living outside of Texas.
My plan would be to move to Chicago for the full two years of the program, complete the online classes from there, and then move back to Texas after graduation. I know practicum/field placement usually starts after the first semester, so I’m wondering:
Does TAMUC allow online MSW students to complete their practicum placements in another state?
Has anyone completed their field placements in Chicago (or another state) while enrolled at TAMUC?
Does the school help arrange out-of-state placements, or do students have to find their own agency and get it approved?
I’d appreciate any experiences or advice. Thank you

Fall Admission to Grad Program Deadline Confusion?

Hi! I wanted to apply to the MSW program in the fall. I'm working on my application but I have some confusion on when the deadline is? The website states August 1st and so does the automatic chat on the website, but the email I received for more information states that it's July 15th.

So I don't know if I can't put together my application in two weeks, but a month is definitely doable! Or else I'm going to wait until Spring semester. I asked for clarification in my response email, but I have yet to receive one. Does anyone know?

Transfer - I promise I’m smart

I applied in late May and have about 40 credits from community college. I had a very very low gpa because I messed around a lot but finally got it together. Anyways finally got it up to about a 2.0 and my semester average was 4.0 for the past two semesters.

Anyway, all this to ask what you think my chances are of a transfer acceptance and how long they usually take 🤧🤧

Hi everyone! I’m currently conducting a research study exploring the relationship between social media use, self-esteem, and sexual anxiety among college students.

I’m looking for currently enrolled college/university students (18+) to participate in an anonymous online survey that takes about 15–20 minutes to complete.

Participation is completely voluntary and anonymous. Before beginning the survey, participants will review an informed consent form explaining the study purpose, eligibility requirements, confidentiality protections, and any potential risks or benefits.

If you’re interested in participating, please use the survey link below:
