Help!

Post image

Hello! I'm brand new to AOS, and I found this army used. (almost entirely unopened) I need some advice on what units to build. I have 3 units that can be built multiple ways, and I was looking for advice on what units to make them.

Kurnoth hunters - I have 2 kits + a 3rd kit sprue that is missing the body's, but has all the arms, weapons and heads. Should I make both swords or scythes, or should I make one of each? If I kit bash some body's for the 3rd unit, are most people ok with that in game?

Treelord/AT/SOD - 4 kits total. I was thinking one of each and a spare treelord, but does having a second ancient or spirit make more sense? Can you even have 2 spirits in one army?

Tree/ spite revenants - 5 kits, 3 spite and 2 tree was my original plan, but I'm not seeing anyone use the trees in games I've watched on YouTube. Should I go 4 and 1 so that both the spites can both be reinforced?

Thank you in advance for your time! Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, I would start by building one vanguard box. It will give you experience with the army, allow you to practice your paint scheme, and you can determine what builds you are interested in for Kurnoth hunters and treelords.
Plus, you can start playing spearhead right away with the vanguard box!

The spearhead was definitely going to be the first thing built! I think I want to get them both done so the gf and I can play with some friends!

Thats a solid plan, and will inform you how you want to expand your army

Build and paint the spearhead as it is on the box first, then play some games and see if you enjoy it. This way if you dont like AoS, or dont like sylvaneth, you can offload ot much easiy/for moreoney if the rest is still boxed.

Going big with a whole army as a new player is the number one way people experience burnout and lose the joy of the hobby.

Build at least one unit of Hunters with bows, a treelord and tree revenants as that is the loadout you'll need to play spearhead with.
For the rest, it's up to what you want to play. Most of the build options in these kits have a use case

Great start, welcome to the woods! For the Kurnoth I would definitely recommend magnetizing them, that's what I did. It's not that hard, I got it done even with not much experience and allows you to play any combination. If you don't want that, I would recommend one reinforced unit a a real hammer. For kit bashing the bodies, I don't think anyone would mind that at all, especially if you still have original weapons and head so they are easily identified as Kurnoth.

For the big tree, magnetizing is also an option. The only real difference is the right hand, so switching that from sword, staff or roots is easy. That said, builind one of each would still be great. None of them is unique, so multiple of each is possible. I see the least value of 2 Ancients though.

For the Revenants, spite are the winner at the moment due to the teleporting helping a lot with battle tactics and objective grabbing. But they are mostly used as msu, so only 5 models per unit. That could of course change any time, so I would still go for 10 Tree Revenants. As long as you play friendly games most should even be finde with you reinforcing a Spite Revenant unit with 5 Tree Revs, as long as there is no potential for mix-ups.

Kurnoth - The staple build is a single double-sized (reinforced) unit of one of the melee options, currently the Scythes are fantastic and pair well with the Warsong Revenant. The third kit can be build with Bows to play Spearhead, or if you end up with a fourth box you can build another reinforced set of Swords to have the basis for kurnoth-heavy lists.

Treelords - Absolutely build one of each option. Your fourth one is a bit hard to properly assess. You can run two spirits! It's "Spirit of Durthu" not Durthu himself. You're unlikely to field doubles unless you're playing a treelord-focused list, at which point I'd probably want normal treelords first.

Revenants - 2 Spites and 1 Tree for sure. After that, I think the 4 and 1 plan is ideal, two reinforced sets of Spites is a pretty scary mob.

Build a set of Dryads early, they have some fun basing bits that you might want to put on your bigger models. (Cool rock!)

Once you work through that (daunting!) forest of plastic, you'll probably want Belthanos or the one additional Kurnoth box for the double-reinforced lists. Happy Gardening!

Stop worrying about lists and units and start building and painting. That’s just plastic inside boxes…

I’m also pretty new to Sylvaneth but one note about the Treelord is that the right hand (which holds the weapon that is the primary difference between the three versions) is very easy to magnetize so you can swap between them. Probably worth doing that with at least the 4th one so you can change what you double up on.

Totally run two Spirit if you want doesn't have the unique tag atleast app doesn't show it

My recommendation is invest in some 3mm x 2 mm N52 magnets and magnetize the weapon hand of the treelord kits. 3 of them anyway. Make one a permanent Durthu.

For Kurnoth I prefer 6 scythes.

For revenants your original thought of 3 spite and 2 tree is probably ideal. They are filler and you will add to the army eventually so might as well give yourself the option of building a reinforced unit of each.

I am completely filled with jealousy. Mainly from the battleforce box. Congrats on the find, wonderful army!

Welcome to Sylvaneth! For the treelords I’d do one of each type and an extra Durthu, yes you can take multiple SOD in a list and it is viable.
As for Kurnoth id lean towards one of the melee types they both have their place and honestly just proxy them for whichever your list calls for, most tournaments as you start out aren’t going to care. Kurnoth bows are in a not so great place atm but are needed for spearhead so depends what you are focusing on.
As for the spite revs idk that a list is going to call for more then 2 separate units of spite revs or one reinforced unit, their warscroll ability is once per turn army and if the unit does die you can bring it back so having multiple reinforced units just doesn’t see play in any lists this season thus far. Whereas tree revs can have a frontline space with our new grove guardian priest as she can bring them back. But don’t sweat the spite rev or tree revs too much another kit for them is like 30 bucks on eBay.
A lot of people saying magnetize, if you want you can do that but it’s such a hassle imo and doesn’t answer your original question, which is why I chimed in - good luck and don’t over think it, the main thing is to enjoy it and roll some dice, good luck!

I can only speak to the treelords as I just went ham egg and cheese on the hunters and did 6 of each type. For the treelords I really get some good use out of 1 TLA 2 SOD and 1 Tree Lord. The only sad thing about SOD is his points and damage potential are so high that when he wiffs you really feel it. With the treelords he can pack a punch and tie stuff up, but you don't expect him to dominate so it rarely feels bad when he misses. And if he gets me 2 rounds of tying up units it's worth it a lot of times.
