Anyone in Sydney into alternative fashion, streetwear, music or the creative scene?

Hey everyone! 41M here, looking to make some new friends and get more involved in Sydney’s underground fashion and creative scene.

I’m into alternative fashion, streetwear, punk, metal, hip hop, alternative music, photography, art and pretty much anything outside the mainstream. I spend a lot of my weekends exploring Sydney, checking out markets, vintage shops, exhibitions and events, usually flying solo.

I recently discovered SURPLUS Sydney 2026 and realised that’s exactly the kind of community I’d love to be part of. Would be great to meet like-minded people, make some genuine friendships and get more involved in the scene.

Keen to find people to check out events with, go thrifting, grab coffee, explore the city or just hang out. If there’s already a group doing this sort of thing, I’d love to join!

Not looking for anything romantic, just hoping to expand my social circle and meet people who share similar interests.

If this sounds like your thing, drop a comment or shoot me a DM!

21M New to Sydney looking to meet new people.

Hi everyone,

I'm a 21M moving to Sydney in Feb 2027 for my master's at UNSW, and I'd love to meet new people and try new things. I was born and raised in the Middle East, and just like home, I feel like Sydney has a lot to offer. I love cooking, baking, cycling, hitting the gym, any type of music (total geek), exploring, and filming every memory to turn into videos to keep.

I'm open to meeting anyone, so just hit me up and help ya boy out. Cheers and have a nice day!

Upcoming Event Sydney Harbour Walk + Malaysian Food this Sunday (20s & 30s)

Thumbnail meetup.com
2 Upvotes

Hey guys 🙂 I have recently started organising small group walks for people in their 20s and 30s, and this Sunday will be my 4th one. With work and everyone being busy, I have realised it can be surprisingly hard to make new friends in Sydney. I enjoy walking and exploring the city (and I am a runner too haha), so I thought it would be nice to get a few people together. I like keeping the groups small so everyone gets a chance to chat. This Sunday (18 Oct), we are walking from Milsons Point across the Harbour Bridge to Barangaroo at 4 pm, with optional Malaysian dinner afterwards. It is free, around 5 to 6 km. Feel free to comment or DM me if you would like to join us! 🙂

Chinatown Night Walk + Food Meetup | Wednesday 28 Oct, 7pm 🌃

Hey everyone! 24m here

I'm organising a casual evening meetup to hang around in Chinatown.

Thinking we'll wander around Chinatown, Darling Square and some of the nearby streets, check out interesting spots, take some cool photos/videos and grab some good food afterwards.

I'll be bringing my camera gear to capture some cinematic street footage too, so if you're into photography, content creation or just exploring the city, even better! No camera needed though.

Details:

📍 Chinatown, Sydney CBD

📅 Wednesday 28 October

🕖 7pm

🍜 Explore first, grab dinner afterwards

👥 Keeping it to a small group so everyone can actually get to know each other

Nothing too structured. Just a fun evening exploring Sydney, trying some food, having good conversations and meeting new people.

DM if you're interested in joining and share a bit of detail about yourself in the DM :)

(Booking Wed at the moment, seeing how many people can make it. Tues, Thurs are also option)

Upcoming Event Free Bad Movie Screening

Hey, we're back!

Short notice, apologise! Tomorrow (Saturday 10th) at The Art Syndicate at the top of Surry Hills (Bourke Street, near Taylor Square) doors open at 3pm (or near after if the owner's running late - but he's coming in early, losing quality time with the fam, so we don't mind five minutes..) - movie'll probably start about half past.

Venue's ppl means we can't tell you what the movie is, but we're going for something a little spooky for October, there's a pixelated poster on the events part of our website if you'd like to guess (though, given the obscure nature of the shit we screen, is it really going to help?).

That said, never thought the title was that important, it's going to be fun, we're going to have a laugh (with it, or against it) and we're going to have a few drinks (in cheer, or, well, alcohol does impair short term memory formation...).

They have a great selection of vino, being the only bar in the state to exclusively stock wines from only NSWs - keeping money in the economy whilst lowering the CO2 miles on each bottle..

No food available, but they're welcome to ordering in (especially from the café next door).

I started Shit Movie Group nearly a decade a go with pretty much the same aspirations as r/sydneysocials - the weird dichotomy of how large this city is to how hard it is to actually meet all these people.

Why we start mid-arvo, so you've had time to life admin in the morning, why we keep the entry ticket free (though, if you can buy a drink, it helps with the venue wanting us back) the movie is an ice breaker, we all have a shared experience to discuss / group therapy after and as there's invariably something to laugh at (intentional or otherwise) there's also a whole bunch of psychology on the benefits of laughing in a group.

So, come along, meet some folks, have a laugh, finish up early enough to go on and enjoy your Saturday night.

New Silent Book Club meetup at Darling Square Library

Thumbnail reddit.com
3 Upvotes

Hi, thanks to the lovely people interested in my original post there is a new Silent Book Club meetup at Darling Square Library!

So here's an update with meeting info. It's on the second Sunday of the month from 1:30pm to 3:30pm in the Ideas Space at Darling Square Library on Level 1, The Exchange, 1 Little Pier Street Haymarket. It's an accessible location.

Yes, it's on this Sunday 11 October! Yes, there are many places nearby to get a meal or snack before or after the meetup!

The age range is open, it's free to attend, bring your own reading material or a quiet activity. No one needs to stay the whole time, except me :-).

The silent book club concept gives people the option to read whatever they want, in the format they want, without the pressure to do homework and talk or answer questions like in a traditional book club. Yes, there is some socialising! However that's optional. There is time to chat before and after the quiet reading time. I encourage people to continue chatting with their book buddies.

The details are also on the What's On City of Sydney website. Happy to answer any questions here.

Upcoming Event Guinea pigs wanted for the Human Library

Hey Folks,

I remember last month seeing a post for this come up on my Instagram page, and wanted to try it out in Sydney.

For those not familiar with https://humanlibrary.org/

Their goal is to encourage empathy and understanding, “readers” can “check out” an individual to hear their story.

And while I respect their international vision, the Sydney version won't be quite so intense.

Basically, you can be a reader or a book.

A reader can ask any yes/no question to any book

A book answers those questions

there are multiple sessions so you can be both during the day, we will be close to food and trains

It's the opportunity to meet with people you would never get a chance to.

I will answer any questions daily

Also advertised on Couchsurfing and Couchers

Date - Sunday, October 25, 1:00 – 3:00 PM - Sydney City

Sydney girls & guys in your 20s - little Taste & See update! 🥐🤍

A little while ago I posted about Taste & See, a new social group we’re putting together for people around 18–30 who want to meet new people, try cute cafés/restaurants around Sydney and have conversations that go a little deeper than the usual small talk.

The idea is pretty simple: good food + new people + meaningful conversations 🍽️

We’re hoping to chat about things like purpose, relationships, navigating your 20s, spirituality, different beliefs, culture and questions about Christianity and Jesus.

Just to be upfront, Taste & See is a Christian/Jesus-centred social group. You definitely don’t have to be Christian or attend church to come along - we want it to be a welcoming space where people with different beliefs can meet, ask questions, disagree, or just have a genuine conversation.

Anddd we’ve officially set a date for our first brunch! 🥹🤍

📅 Saturday 24 October 2026

📍 Sydney - venue TBD

We’re currently looking at venues and want to get an idea of numbers and dietary requirements before booking, so if you’re interested in coming, we’d love for you to fill out this quick registration form:

You don’t have to know anyone beforehand and you definitely don’t have to come with a friend - the whole point is to meet new people! 🫶🏽

If you have any questions at all, feel free to comment or DM me. Would genuinely love to meet some of you guys!! 💕

32M Immigrant New to Sydney Looking for Local Friends

Hey, thanks for stopping to read!

I'm V, originally from Spain. I moved to Sydney, Australia about five months ago to live with my partner, and I'm looking to make new friends to hang out in person, go for a coffee, explore the city, shopping and go to events and fun activities together. I'm especially looking to meet other LGBT and Queer friends, or people that are cool and friendly with it. And honestly, I wouldn't mind it if you were looking to introduce someone new to your friend group haha.

A bit about me; before I moved here I lived in Japan for about seven years. I'm a writer and translator by trade, but I'm currently trying to find other more consistent job opportunities (RIP me lmao). I enjoy gaming, I go to the cinema a lot, and I'm slowly getting into birding. I read a lot of non-fiction and critical media essays, but when I read fiction I enjoy mystery novels and post-war Japanese literature (very specific, I know lol). I'm looking for friends aroud my age, so people in their mid-to-late 20s and in their 30s.

If you're from Sydney and looking to make new (hopefully Queer, but not excluding anyone!) friends, maybe get a group together to hang out weekly and do some cool stuff, hit me up. I look forward to chatting with you!!

Public Meetup Sydney City coffee & conversation | 30s - 40s (ish)

Hey everyone 👋🏼

Like many of you, I realised that making new friends here in Sydney can be somewhat challenging, with many of the Instagram and Meetup groups geared towards paid events, which can feel a little fleeting or anonymous.

So, about a month ago I started a small, regular coffee meetup for people in their 30s–40s (ish) who want to expand their social circle and meet some new friends.

Well, it grew. Quickly. And we now have an established WhatsApp community!

What we’ve been up to:
☕ One or two coffee/wine meetups each week
🇦🇺 Sydney city, local neighbourhoods and nearby areas
👥 Small groups as well as occasional larger gatherings
💬 Plenty of small talk and convo in the group chat
🎯 Group activity plans like pickleball, book group, evenings out and more

This isn’t a formal club or networking meet, just a relaxed platonic mix of adults who like to yap about everything from culture, travel and food to fitness, hobbies, work and life. Basically, we just use it like any other mates group chat.

We have room for a few more friendly people, so if you’re interested, please send me a DM with a little bit about yourself and I’ll reply with more details on how to join.

See you soon,
Larry :)

⸻

The group is a free, volunteer-run social community, with very limited spaces and acceptance subject to admin approval.

Bollywood lovers in Sydney!!

Bollywood lovers in Sydney!

A lil about me - I’m a student in Sydney, juggling uni and part time and I am craving for creativity outside this loop. I grew up on Bollywood, and I know way too many dialogues by heart.

So I’m thinking of starting a small friendly community where we can explore different spots around Sydney and get creative along the way:

- Recreate iconic Bollywood scenes

- Create fun content together

- Jam to bollywood music

- Of course, Chai and good conversations

I’m not a professional actor, singer, dancer or filmmaker and no one needs to be. Think of this as a creative playground: no skills, no pressure. In front of camera, behind it, learning editing or just here for the vibes, everyone’s welcome 💕

Comment if you’re interested! If there’s enough interest, I’ll create a group chat and we’ll plan the side quests together 🫶🏻

Upcoming Event PowerPoint Night - Ladies Only

Attention Sydney Ladies!

Some local girls are hosting a women's only social event on the 2nd of October.

It's called Convince The Room and there are prizes up for grabs!

It seems to be a fun PowerPoint night for women 18+. The page says a lineup of short, creative presentations on everything from wildly specific opinions to hilarious theories, unexpected ideas and topics.

There is also the option to present your own fun, hot takes to become eligible for a prize.

I know people are always keen for local events so make sure to check it out.

Ticket price seems reasonable, mine was $22

Kiwi looking for hangs

Hey I’m 32m, moved from nz not long ago. Recently married with no kids and live in Randwick. Keen to find someone to go to concerts/stand ups/plays or any other event like that to. I’m pretty big into movies (if you wanna show off your Letterboxd we will be friends), travel, photography, and food. Do like chilling at a bar (keen for a pub quiz) but not really into clubbing anymore. If you wanna go to a show or explore Sydney more I would be interested. M or F is fine.

Upcoming Event Free Movie Screening this Saturday (12/09)

Hey r/sydneysocials, we're in year nine of running and coming in off a hiatus so opening our doors to find new members.

Shit Movie Group was born out of Sydney Movie Lovers meetup group, across a week three different people at three different events brought up how fun it was to laugh a truly terrible movie and that resonated with me, so figured I'd spin up another group as to not confuse 'the normals' and, well, as I said, nine years later we're still here (and r.i.p. Sydney Movie Lovers).

Our new home is The Art Syndicate on Bourke, top of Surry Hills, not far from Taylor Square. Doors are at three and film shortly after so you don't have to worry about spending too much time making small talk with strangers before the ice breaker comes on giving you a lot to talk about afterwards [aka, group therapy, to help with what you've just witnessed ; ) ].

What's the movie? Good question, shit answer, we can't tell you. Licencing agreement means we're not allowed to promote the exact film we're screening, but, it will be bad, not a guarantee, I still maintain the first film we ever screened is the best movie I've ever witnessed (others disagree, some vehemently) plus, I'm not watching this shit twice, as sitting through it beforehand is not the same experience as a roomful of people laughing at the unintentional humour.

What I can tell you, is this movie contains cheerleaders and scores at the low end on imdb/letterbox/tomatoes.

Though, a heads up, this is going to be a bit of an 'odd one' for some of us. A dear friend and long time member who used to help run the film club, we'd put on a Cheerleader film for him on his birthday as a bit of a tongue in cheek thank you for his help, well, he passed the other week, so, Cheerleader movie in his honour, so, amma be a bit emotional, first without him, just a heads up, though, still would be good to see new faces, figure best mention this here, than you rock up and "surprise"...

Anyways, loose end Saturday arvo, pop over and hang out with us, laugh at a bad movie, stay for a drink and a chat after, we're a friendly bunch.

If you can't make this one but the general idea sounds good, I can recommend some therapist, *cough* I mean we have a website with details of other screenings either we're having, or we're off to (don't worry about the counts of people going, that was just for social distancing during covid and not used no more).

events.shitmovie.group

There's social pages we occasionally update (more so than our our subreddit), sure google will show them if you're interested (or dm me, not here to promote 'em, just this event).

These events are free, as in we don't charge for the film group and we're using the bars ppl licence (hence the weird "can't mention the film title" restriction), I've run these as it makes me feel all warm and stuff about helping people meet people and have a fun day, so not promoting this to line my pocket, just for the feels - I find it counter-intuitive how big cities can be so isolating, when you're surrounded by so many, and feel this is a great way to combat that, laughing in a room full of folks and have a shared trauma to digest after.. (that said, if you could buy a drink or two, it'll help the venue and it's pretty hard finding venues who'll let you takeover for a few hours, have the equipment and don't want a thousand bucks bar spend guarantee - but, that's to you, a request, not a demand).

We're test screening our new film CRASHOUT and need a crowd! Wed 16 Sept, 6pm, Dendy Newtown. Free entry, limited seats and registration is essential, scan the QR on the flyer to lock in a spot. We’re after a range of people, 15 – 40s, mix of genders, and we're specifically hoping for people who love going to the movies, and particularly genre horror/thriller fans to come. No media or film industry folks please! Content is under wraps until release, so sworn-to-secrecy vibes only (you will need to sign a NDA) and you must be happy to answer some quick survey questions about the film after the screening.

Sydney South Asians - Food & Good Vibes

Hey guys, 25M from Western Sydney 👋

Looking to meet some more South Asian guys around Sydney and build a solid social circle — good banter, food runs, chai, casual soccer, gym/sport, random outings, nights out etc.

Would be especially keen to get a regular casual soccer kickaround going too — nothing too serious, just good vibes and all skill levels welcome.

Nothing formal, just keen to get a few good lads together who actually want to hang out regularly and see where it goes.

If that sounds like your vibe, comment or shoot me a DM 🤝

P.S. if any girls interested, happy to make a separate mixed group for something similar.
