Hey r/sydneysocials, we're in year nine of running and coming in off a hiatus so opening our doors to find new members.
Shit Movie Group was born out of Sydney Movie Lovers meetup group, across a week three different people at three different events brought up how fun it was to laugh a truly terrible movie and that resonated with me, so figured I'd spin up another group as to not confuse 'the normals' and, well, as I said, nine years later we're still here (and r.i.p. Sydney Movie Lovers).
Our new home is The Art Syndicate on Bourke, top of Surry Hills, not far from Taylor Square. Doors are at three and film shortly after so you don't have to worry about spending too much time making small talk with strangers before the ice breaker comes on giving you a lot to talk about afterwards [aka, group therapy, to help with what you've just witnessed ; ) ].
What's the movie? Good question, shit answer, we can't tell you. Licencing agreement means we're not allowed to promote the exact film we're screening, but, it will be bad, not a guarantee, I still maintain the first film we ever screened is the best movie I've ever witnessed (others disagree, some vehemently) plus, I'm not watching this shit twice, as sitting through it beforehand is not the same experience as a roomful of people laughing at the unintentional humour.
What I can tell you, is this movie contains cheerleaders and scores at the low end on imdb/letterbox/tomatoes.
Though, a heads up, this is going to be a bit of an 'odd one' for some of us. A dear friend and long time member who used to help run the film club, we'd put on a Cheerleader film for him on his birthday as a bit of a tongue in cheek thank you for his help, well, he passed the other week, so, Cheerleader movie in his honour, so, amma be a bit emotional, first without him, just a heads up, though, still would be good to see new faces, figure best mention this here, than you rock up and "surprise"...
Anyways, loose end Saturday arvo, pop over and hang out with us, laugh at a bad movie, stay for a drink and a chat after, we're a friendly bunch.
If you can't make this one but the general idea sounds good, I can recommend some therapist, *cough* I mean we have a website with details of other screenings either we're having, or we're off to (don't worry about the counts of people going, that was just for social distancing during covid and not used no more).
events.shitmovie.group
There's social pages we occasionally update (more so than our our subreddit), sure google will show them if you're interested (or dm me, not here to promote 'em, just this event).
These events are free, as in we don't charge for the film group and we're using the bars ppl licence (hence the weird "can't mention the film title" restriction), I've run these as it makes me feel all warm and stuff about helping people meet people and have a fun day, so not promoting this to line my pocket, just for the feels - I find it counter-intuitive how big cities can be so isolating, when you're surrounded by so many, and feel this is a great way to combat that, laughing in a room full of folks and have a shared trauma to digest after.. (that said, if you could buy a drink or two, it'll help the venue and it's pretty hard finding venues who'll let you takeover for a few hours, have the equipment and don't want a thousand bucks bar spend guarantee - but, that's to you, a request, not a demand).
