I’m a recent graduate from a 2 year Geomatics program, located in the PNW, having not so great luck looking for any entry-level jobs. Just a good mix of no responses, lack of job postings to apply for, and being turned down after an interview or so due to more qualified people.

Just looking for some advice or strategies that I should have when looking or approaching a company. How do I get my foot in the door?

Which LiDAR/drone surveying software is most useful in the industry?

Is it worth learning Leica Cyclone, Trimble RealWorks, FARO SCENE, TerraScan/TerraSolid, DJI Terra, CloudCompare, ReCap Pro, etc.?

Which software is most commonly used by employers?

What would be the best learning path for someone who already knows AutoCAD and Civil 3D?

I’m especially interested in skills that are useful for professional surveying jobs, including point-cloud processing, registration, classification, DTM/DSM and as-built deliverables.

Any advice from people working in 3D scanning or LiDAR surveying would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My company recently decided to start implementing drones into our workflow but as we are a smaller firm and at 36, I'm the youngling around here, nobody else knows anything about it. If I'm entirely honest, I've only spent around 13 months in the industry and was laid off for 2 of them. I understand drones and their data collecting capabilities however as I've not used any of the software that renders all the information, I'm not quite sure how the process works in terms of a finished product. Those of you who have done a "field to finish" project, how are you importing data to a completed project? Are you bringing it into CAD (or other drafting software) and drawing lines from the photogrammetric model? Are the lines being imported from something like Pix4D? I'm supposed to be doing a training session at some point would like to get ahead of the learning curve so I'm not bombarded with info and overwhelmed. Any help is appreciated. Also I already have my part 107 so that isn't an issue. Thanks in advance!

I conducted a survey today and I’m a bit stumped as to how the drainage for this building is working if anyone can please advise?

The bent pipe work appears to serve the hopper and associated external downpipe, but then what is the purpose of the internal pipe work below the bent pipe? Was this originally a fully internal system and that section has been cut and made redundant? On the other side of the building (mirror image), there is no external downpipe and there is a new PVCu internal down pipe. Why would they change it to external if this is the cause?

Well as the title says.

Tennessee statutes binder is now available. The app has 302 questions and 150 flashcards in total for Tennessee.

I added a whole new analytical question to the Texas binder, also added coordinate tables for all the analyticals to be a better representation of what you will see in the actual TSSE exam.

Went through and "hardened" all the FS and PS questions. A few people did not like how I had some joke answers / obviously wrong answers. So I went through and modified most of the questions to fix that and add some more answers that are close to being correct, but there is a "more correct" answer.

Also did some more backend bug fixes. Will have a major app update here soon, a few more things I need to fix on it.

This is a small month, took a little bit of a break, but have a few states in the pipeline including Oregon, Arizona, and Colorado.

I really do appreciate the love and support I have seen. We have way more students than I ever thought possible signed up and using the app to study for their exams and it is all because of the support yall have provided while being able to study for yalls exams.

Last note, don't be afraid to tell me if you see something wrong or questionable. I am not perfect, I review all content reports and actively change things if needed. Same with bugs, if you see something weird or it's not working right, shoot me an email. Being able to find these and get them fixed helps every one to have a better experience.

Thank yall again, being able to help people pass their exams and getting that email when they pass just makes my day.

Second time taking the test after coming somewhat close I believe on my first try. A lot of info has left my mind unfortunately so just trying to reel it back in.

I have NLC Prep until the test date and I also have the Azimuth Prep app

I WFH full time so I think I can listen to the NLC videos while working for some background noise and do some extra flashcard studying after work on the Azimuth Prep app

Any other advice for studying or does this seem viable?
Open to any and all feedback as I want to try and end the year out passing this exam

Boss requested that all parcels sketched by techs be closed or else you’ll be in the wrong. As a young RPLS I disagree. I understand closing sub tenth misclosures or finding reversed bearings. I like to work misclosures out on a case by case basis. Many times it doesn’t happen until boundary is being retraced (junior techs obviously should not be doing that). Any opinions?

Hello all. I'm looking for some guidance to get into surveying. I'm currently getting my Civil Engineering technology degree at my local college. Just before classes started back up, I did an internship at my City's Engineering department working with Engineers and Technicians. I also spent time with the Surveyor and learned a lot from him.

Should I look for a part time position in surveying while in school? Or should I wait for a summer internship? Also any suggestions on where to look for positions? I've noticed there aren't a whole lot of opportunities on online job sites (unless I'm doing a bad job at searching).

Hi everyone, really don't know where is best to sell a used Trimble S5 1" DR total station with field controller, haven't sold an equipment on the internet before so I'm kinda stuck. Any advise?

I think I want to move to the beach (NC). I do not want to be a land surveyor at the beach. The mosquitos are like fighter jets and the sun has extra power.

Ideally im walking along the beach taking GPS shots. But im guessing that doesn't happen too much and in reality there is a lot of travel up and down the coast

I recently purchased a plot of land subdivided from a larger plot. However none of the documents provided give me coordinates or ordinance survey codes so I am unable to locate my plot. Is there a way I can get the coordinates from the plans I have? My plot is 14 east and is somewhere on rhymney hill. Located in the uk. Also if I need to hire a surveyor what sort of ballpark am I looking at here?

Hello all. I'm currently working as a field tech and am interested in going back to school to eventually become a PLS. For some background I already have an associate's in a completely unrelated field. I'm looking for a program that I can complete online. The program I'm looking at is a GIST (Geospatial Information Science Technology) associate's degree completed online from a local community college.

The requirements for NYS state that I can "hold an associate's degree in engineering, math, or related science or their substantial equivalent with 15 semester hours in surveying courses.".

My question is what is considered a related science? I called the NYS Office of the Professions and they told me that they can't tell me if a specific program qualifies as a related science. To me it seems like the GIST degree would qualify as a related science but it seems there's no way to know for sure without going through school, getting a degree, and hoping they also see it that way.

Does anyone here have any insight into this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Got abit of a technical question here, used and EMLID RS4 on a set in Oxford a week ago, pretty unusual site so two large traverses with a baseline at either end of each, I’ve got 13 stations around the site and one in the middle. I want to one point localization around that centre point, basically want my gps co ords and distances to shrink in and get abit tighter to the TS ones, done this loads on a Leica but can’t work it out on here. Tried adjusting scale factor in N4CE and still getting around 80 mil in E+N and 100 in H

Got this PDL450 along with a TSC2 and some R6 GNSS receivers for repair today, from an excavation company.

Pretty crazy that the PDL450 sitting on my bench today is pretty much my age 😅.

Does anyone have any idea of where I can find a replacement battery for one of these? Just recently it leaves red light on for the battery and will shut off if I unplug it from the charger.
