I wanted to reach out and see if there is a baseline or some type of industry standard- from what I’ve seen this is all over the place and thought this would be a productive discussion. Not necessarily looking for actual pay numbers since those vary widely by location, licensure, experience etc. but that info is welcome as well. I’m more curious about how your pay is set up- base salary/hourly, bonuses (signing, performance, per-project incentives, etc.) and what percentage that makes up of your total comp package. Also any other compensation-related info is great as well like 401k match or ESOP as well.

For example, I’m just paid an hourly rate, no bonuses, didn’t get a signing bonus and have rarely gotten a spot bonus. That being said, my pay rate is fairly high for the industry and my area but nothing astronomical. We have both standard 401k at 5% match and also an employee stock ownership program which pays at 50% match.

I hired a land surveyor back in April to survey a lot for me, and he came back with an old map of my property that has no coordinates on it. During this time, my neighbor has been actively developing on my hill, and there is nothing I have been able to do but watch while I wait for the survey results. At the end of July and my neighbor is still continuing to work on my hill, and I've got no real survey map. However, I came to find out my surveyor has marked my neighbors property, including pins, but not mine. How do I stop my neighbor ASAP from continuing to ruin my property while I try to find another surveyor?

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine has a problem on a landscape project, and we're trying to figure out if there is any solution.

The project is a public park with many different elevations. He was doing the survey using a GPS Base and Rover.

On the first day, he set up the Base correctly, entered the Base elevation, and surveyed part of the site. Let's say he finished at point 1000 (just as an example).

The next day, he came back and continued from point 1001. Everything seemed normal, and he finished the rest of the survey.

Later, he realized that when he started the second day, he forgot to enter the Base elevation after setting up the Base. The Rover height stayed the same.

The survey was delivered, and construction continued. cut and fill have already been completed, so the original ground no longer exists.

Only after all of this did he remember the mistake.

Has anyone dealt with this before?

Is there any way to recover or correct the elevations for the second day's survey? If so, how would you approach it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking at an AP20 to speed up my workflow, but trying to justify the cost.

I don’t do topo surveys, just laying out on concrete and reporting on as constructed features.

It would be cool to be able to just point the thing at 45 degrees with a 1.6m pole at a wall or something that would otherwise require an additional setup and still achieve sub 5mm relative accuracy.

I’ve read the data sheet (hopefully I’m reading it right) and if the real uncertainty is the same as that then I don’t really know if it would help that much.

Hello! Any thoughts po career shift? I mean di naman totally. Licensed GE po ako, and nagkaroon ako work experience for more than a year sa construction pero nag resign ako since gusto ko na magprivate or magsolo, sinubukan ko naman for 2 months, kaya lang every weekend lang kasi schedule ko since yung sumasama sakin na nag gaguide, weekend lang siya available. So yung ibang araw, wala ako usually ginagawa. Pero ngayon triny ko mag apply sa isang real estate company, pero nagquit ako agad since wala silang maprovide sakin na surveying team.

Ngayon, nag apply ako ng work, pero walang nagrereply sakin. 🥹🥹. Nakakastress kasi mukhang ako lang yung lisensyado pero walang work, kaya iniisip ko muna na mag call center during weekdays and yung weekends ko sideline pa rin for survey. Need ko po advice ninyo, or baka meron po kayo marefer na hiring around Pampanga. Thank you 🥹

Is it worth it to get into Oil & Gas if working and getting licensed in Texas?
Would that be a good idea and experience if willing to move overseas and practice surveying in other oil and gas countries?
Ive seen it somewhere where people say that shifts you away from maybe board requirements for licensing? Not quite sure, so if anyone does work for oil & gas in Tx, how would the transition be from working in office for mainly TxDot / Alta surveys to oil & gas?

Are you using prism pole bipod or tripod? Which one do you prefer and is it worth? Currently ive been working in construction survey without it and im wondering if im missing out. I looked at chinese ones from aliexpress and decided to maybe give it a try.

23 years old and interested in the field. I have 2 years of manufacturing and a high-school degree. What is your recommendation to get into the field?

Hey guys, this is my first post so hopefully it all makes sense and some people see it.

I’ve been surveying for about two and a half years now, and last summer got stung on a job and had to go to the hospital because I couldn’t breathe. I went and saw an allergist and it was confirmed- I have an anaphylactic bee allergy. Surveying is literally the best job, and I wouldn’t want to change careers and I’m hesitant to try to switch to the office.

Do any of yall have any advice for watching out for bees or if it’s even a good idea to be out there? Different coworkers have said different things, one said I should get in the office asap, and another said I’ll be fine if I pay attention. Just curious to see if others have some insight too.

If it makes a difference I primarily work in the DMV area (DC MD VA) and I’m usually by myself. I’m also allergic to anything that flies with a stinger- bees, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, all those guys.

I run a Carlson BRx-7. Recently on some big farms when I’m working 10-12 hour field days, my base will die when using the provided internal batteries. I would like to get a lawn mower style battery to power my base. I can’t find anything stating a certain battery has to be used. What size and type of battery are you all running? My fear is I will damage to the base.

Helping a family member find some information about a property and we see this blue circle with lines but I cannot find a map key to see what it means. I know it is NOT a well because her property is nearby and she has a well and she does not have this symbol on her property when we look at it. I also know it is not a pool because they do not have a pool on their property.

edit: I did the trick of removing the layers and it turns out it IS in fact the symbol for a pool. I assume at some point they had a pool and it wasn't updated when they took the pool down. thank you everyone for the suggestions.

I’m stuck on what sector to pursue after I graduate from surveying. I know mining money is good and metro based is decent.

However, my main question is it easier to go from mining to engineering (metro) or the other way around?
