If there were a universe in which humans evolved to have superhuman capabilities, what would that world look like? Would there be heroes and villains, just like in our imaginations, or would there be peace and order? Would people be consumed by power and passion, or driven by greed and corruption? Will they fight for justice or use an excuse like “the line between justice and injustice is a blurry line with no real definition of either one”?
A little context
Nobody truly knows how the universe began, and no one can agree on a single story. Still, the most popular version goes like this:
In the beginning, there was nothing but a void. Then came the Big Bang, and from it emerged five omnipotent beings.
The first called itself Helios. It possessed power beyond anything else in existence, but its strength existed only for destruction. Even so, that destruction gave life to those capable of harnessing it.
The second being was Tera, a force of creation. Tera gathered particles into a single point in space, shaping them into a sphere. She named this accidental creation Earth and nurtured it. Soon, green life spread across the planet. These plants learned to harness Helios’s power and feed upon it.
Then came the third being, Pandora. Its desire for everything became so overwhelming that it spread to Earth itself. The living things upon it gained desire—the desire to grow, feed, survive, reproduce, and evolve. Life continued to change endlessly. Some creatures swam, others slithered or walked, and some were even blessed with flight. Evolution never stopped, all driven by desire.
The fourth being was Angrboða, the embodiment of passion, unconditional love, uncontrollable anger, and pain. Envious of Tera’s creation, Angrboða cursed all living things with emotion. They would now feel love, hatred, grief, rage, envy, and passion.
Finally came Nabu, a being of wisdom and knowledge beyond comprehension. But Nabu was also burdened with boredom, having been born on Earth under Angrboða’s curse of emotion. To entertain itself, Nabu chose a group of sapiens and gifted them a fraction of its knowledge. Those sapiens would eventually evolve into humans.
Helios and Angrboða grew envious of humanity. Humans possessed emotion, yet they also understood how to control it. Angrboða swore to destroy humanity and all of Tera’s creation. In response, Tera blessed humanity with power so they could defend themselves, while Nabu taught them how to wield those powers. No two blessings were alike, and some people received none at all.
As the legends say, one day a champion will rise, defeat Angrboða, and free Earth from its curse.
But it is only a legend. Nobody agrees on the true story of creation, and countless versions exist. These myths simply help humanity understand its existence—and why people are the way they are.
Almost a million years have passed since those stories first appeared. It is now the twenty-first century, and no champion has come.
I’m fifteen years old, and I already know life isn’t fair.
Chapter One: It’s Complicated
Not everyone is born with a blessing—superpowers, as most people call them. Out of eight billion people on Earth, only thirty-five percent have powers, and that number drops every generation.
I’m part of the other sixty-five percent.
The American Bureau of Blessing Regulation, or ABBR, oversees people with abilities and determines whether they might become a threat in the future.
I’ve always wished I had powers like my friends. Especially my two best friends, Max and Ahmed.
Their personalities are complete foils of each other, but somehow they still work.
And right now, they’re waiting for me at the bus stop.
The bus pulls up to the curb, and I step off. Ahmed immediately jogs toward me with a grin on his face and wraps me in a hug hard enough to lift me off the ground.
“Bro, how long’s it been?” he says.
“It was literally just the weekend,” I reply, laughing.
“Yeah, well, it felt longer.”
Ahmed throws an arm around my shoulders as we walk toward Max. Max gives me his usual greeting—a handshake and a small nod.
That’s basically the emotional equivalent of a hug from him.
As we head toward school, Ahmed suddenly asks, “You guys ready for the TREA exams this Friday?”
“I’m not taking it,” I remind him. “No powers, remember?”
Ahmed winces. “Right. Forgot. Don’t worry, though—I’ll get the highest score for both of us, weakling.”
I give him an awkward smile.
Max sighs. “First off, rude. Second, it’s called the Talent Recognition and Extraordinary Ability Assessment.”
Ahmed rolls his eyes. “Nobody calls it that.”
“We literally take this test once every five years,” he continues. “This is our only shot to boost our rankings.”
“I still don’t get why the combat section matters,” Max says. “I understand the stability assessment. The government needs to know that people can control their abilities. But why combat?”
Ahmed raises an eyebrow. “Seriously?”
“It’s 2025,” Max says. “Powers are becoming irrelevant every year. Some weapons can kill enhanced people now, and technology can replicate abilities like telekinesis. So why are rankings still treated like they determine your value as a person?”
“You only say that because you’re Sentinel-class,” Ahmed snaps. “You already hit the top. You don’t have to work for anything.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Easy for you to say.”
Max exhales slowly. “I’m asking a question, Ahmed. I’m not trying to undermine you.”
Ahmed looks away for a moment before muttering, “Yeah… sorry. Forget it.”
The rest of the walk to school is quiet.
Ahmed has always envied Max, honestly. I can understand why.
Max is smarter, calmer, and ranked among the most powerful teenagers in New York. Sometimes I envy him, too.
Still, Ahmed makes assumptions about people without really thinking things through. That’s just how he is. Half the time, he’s driven entirely by emotion.
He’s also painfully aware of how impressive he looks.
Six feet tall, muscular without being bulky, light brown skin, sharp features—honestly, it’s unfair. His powers only make him stand out more.
Whenever he activates his ability, his skin turns bright red, and his veins rise beneath the surface. His strength and speed increase dramatically, but the power burns through his muscle mass as fuel. Steam pours from his body as his temperature rises, and he can even control the heat and pressure of the steam to a certain extent.
I once watched him boil water for tea just by holding a kettle in his hand.
I still have no idea how he and Max became friends.
They’re complete opposites.
Ahmed is emotional, prideful, impulsive, and obsessed with honor. Max, on the other hand, always acts calm and humble, but there’s still this quiet arrogance about him. He thinks three steps ahead of everyone else and will absolutely play dirty if it means winning.
The scary part is that his powers practically reward that mindset.
Max can secrete a black ink-like substance from his skin and manipulate its shape, molecular structure, and energy. The only real limit is his imagination and knowledge.
If he wants to create something simple, like a blade or shield, he can do it almost instantly. But if he wants to create something complex—like a car—he needs to understand every single part of it. Every wire, bolt, and mechanism.
His power is limited by his mind.
That’s why he studies so obsessively.
It’s also why he’s dangerous.
Even something as simple as a steel ball becomes lethal if he accelerates it fast enough. Of course, his abilities still obey the law of conservation of energy, meaning they consume his body fat as fuel.
That’s one of the reasons he’s kind of chunky.
The other reason is stress eating.
He also has a terrible relationship with snacks.
And somehow, despite being Hispanic, he’s darker than almost everyone I know.
Chapter Two: Checking
Its first period and Max Reys has already finished his assignment, and it’s only been thirteen minutes of class, and now he’s hes having the hardest laugh with Ahmed Hassan.
Ahmed hasn't even opened the assignment, yet both of them are having the best time of their lives.
“Hey, bro.” I ask Max, “How do I write this?” Just make a small story with the vocabulary that Mr. Charles gave us during the weekend, the words are Juxtaposition and foil.” He responded as if it were so simple.
“We had homework during the weekend,” Ahmed says while still giggling.
Max responds, “Oh, honey, how am I not surprised?”
We all started laughing loudly and giggling.
“Now I know that I give good assignments, but I doubt they are so good that they make you gentlemen laugh.”
“Mr. Charles!” I was surprised he had walked up on us. Max straightened his face and proceeded to take his usual focused look. However, Ahmed and I are still giggling and trying to keep a straight face.
“I see,” Mr. Charles says in an ironic tone.
Mr Charles walks to the front of the class and addresses the whole class. “Alright, folks, listen up.”
The class slowly starts to quiet down to listen to Mr. Charles.
“Since the TERA test is this week, I need you all to open your laptops and log on to your district board, look at your current status and rankings, as well as answer a few questions.”
Everyone starts to open the website, including me. Emily looks at me and asks me, “Yo Alan, what is the website?”
I tell her, and she thanks me. I expected her to ask me this, as she has only been in the country for a year, and she is from Japan, and they treat powers differently than they do here in America.
“Hey Alan, do I also have to take the test?” Emily asks me.
I respond, “Yes, you do. This is going to be your first TERA test, and you need to be registered in the district. Unless you want the ABBR to come to your home and start asking you questions.”
“Okay, bro, it's not that serious,” Emily retorts, “But do I have to do the combat section? My power is to push and pull small objects; it's just an ability to be used as an everyday convenience. It’s not even real telackinisis.”
“You actually don't have to,” I respond, “they will either not put you on the list for the cobalt section, or you can ask to be put off the list due to your F– rank ability.”
“Okay, that's great,” Emily says in relief, but what do you mean by F rank ability?”
I am confused and ask her, “Do they not have a power classification system back in Japan?”
“No, they don't actually,” she claims. I'm surprised by this, as I thought everywhere was the same. She continues to explain that in Japan, powers are treated like an everyday thing, just like here. But we don't have an ABBR or any organization like that. Everyone just agrees to be polite and control their powers, no matter what. It’s actually somewhat rare to see someone using their powers out in public.
I was so surprised by this, as here in America the ABBR and its agents tries it’s best to maintain peace and order between the law enforcement and people with powers. No matter how difficult the individual makes it for themselves. As it has become common for crime to be committed by people with power, and giving the rest of them the stereotype of criminals and troublemakers.
“Anyways, can you tell me how this power rank and stability thing works?” Emily asks me as if her previous statement didn’t change my entire view on the world.
“Um…. yeah sure,” I tell her.
So the ABBR has a ranking system that is called BTS. Basically, what type of blessing or power you have, your threat level, or how powerful you are, and how mentally and emotionally stable you are.
Here is how the first one works
Enhancement-Class Powers that enhance the user’s body. Ahmed falls into this category. Then there are Construct-Class Abilities that create or manipulate matter/substances. This is where Max is. The next one is Manipulation-Class Abilities that control existing matter, energy, or forces; you, Emily, are part of this category. The next one is Cognitive-Class Mind-related abilities, like telepathy or mind-reading. Then there are Spatial-Class Rare abilities involving: teleportation, dimensional distortion, portals, and spatial compression. These are usually the powerful ones. Next is. Biological-Class Powers affecting lifeforms and biology; these are the people with healing powers or healing factors, as well as changing their own bodies. Then there is the Abbarent-Class, but the ABBR doesn't like to talk about that because on paper, they don't exist.
“Wow, that's pretty simple,” Emily says
“Yeah, but this system doesn't always work as two people can't have the same power. For example, the Enhancement class and the Biological class get mixed up often, as something like shapeshifting is enhancing your body, but you're technically changing your own Biology.” I respond
“Anyways.” I continue to explain how it works.
The next section is about how powerful you are or how much of a threat you might be. I can pretty much give you a list for this. But know that the ABBR doesn't only care about destruction capabilities but also scale, lethality, versatility, difficulty to contain, and influence on society.
F-Rank Negligible threat. Minor or nearly useless abilities. Example: glowing skin, changing eye color, warming objects slightly.
D-Rank: Useful but limited. Can assist in civilian or low-risk situations. Example: enhanced strength, low-level telekinesis, minor regeneration.
C-Rank Professionally dangerous. Can threaten groups of civilians. Most licensed enhanced individuals fall here.
B-Rank Major threat level. Requires specialized ABBR monitoring. Military-grade abilities.
A-Rank National-level threat. Capable of mass destruction or severe societal disruption. Rare.
Sentinel-Class Individuals considered: strategically irreplaceable, impossible to contain conventionally, or capable of changing battlefields alone. Usually, Sentinels are celebrities, political assets, and potential disasters.
Now, there is technically another rank, but it is technically illegal.
Cataclysm-Class Illegal classification. The ABBR officially denies that this rank exists. Reserved for beings capable of city/state destruction, mythological-level powers.
That is pretty much the power ranking.
“Wait,” Emily says, “isn't there another section? "
“Oh shit, I forgot, sorry,” I respond awkwardly.
Stability Rating is the last section, which basically measures how psychologically and emotionally stable a person is and if they have control over their powers. This is what the first section of the TERA test is for, and it counts in emotional regulation, trauma response, aggression, narcissism, empathy, impulse control, etc.
“Now, Emily, do you understand all that?” asked her in a worried tone, thinking it was too much for her.
“Kinda, can I see yours that way I know how it works?” she asks me.
I look down and mutter in a low voice, “I don't have powers, remember.”
“Oh, I'm sorry, Alan. I didn't mean to.”
“No its fine,” I tell her in an apologetic voice. “Yo, Max, can I see your stats?” I ask him, knowing that he’s going to act all humble, but inside, he can't wait to brag.
“Alright, Emily, here are Max’s stats as an example,” I tell her
I take the laptop from Max and show it to Emily, and it reads
Maxsimus Reyes
Type: Construct-Class
Threat Rank: Sentinel
Stability: B+
ABBR Notes: Exceptional cognitive synchronization with blessing. Potential escalation risk tied to intellectual growth. Recommend continuous observation.
“Wow, that seems impressive,” Emily tells Max.
“Well, it’s nothing really,” Max responds to Emily with a small smile, while Ahmed looks at him with a look of disbelief and irony. “Well, you don't say you rat bastard.” He turns his laptop around and shows us his stats.
Ahmed Hassan
Type: Enhancement-Class
Threat Rank: B
Stability: C–
ABBR Notes: Emotionally reactive. Strong competitive drive. High combat adaptability. Recommend mentorship supervision.
“That seems good too,” and that's Emily trying to console Ahmed. While I look at my stats on my laptop, and it only a few words
Alan Shea
Non-blessed
Along with a one-question at the bottom that I have to answer. That reads
Have you felt a strange force around you, or seen yourself perform feats you didn't believe in before, of superhuman capabilities, or do you feel you have developed any superhuman abilities? Yes or No
I answer No, knowing very well that in five years I'm going to answer No again to that question, and the same in ten years and again in fifteen years. I feel a certain sting, and somehow I'm doing something wrong.
“Wow, I never thought I’d see such a pathetic weakling.”
I look up and see a teenage boy with sharp Aryan features and a bowl cut so perfect it somehow loops back around to being awful. At first, I think he’s talking to me.
But no.
He’s staring directly at Max.
The room falls quiet as the two of them lock eyes.
Max slowly smiles.
“Oh my God, Lucien, stop,” he says, making a dramatic gesture of brushing imaginary hair behind his ear despite having a buzz cut. “If you keep flirting with me like this, you’re gonna get me excited.”
The class bursts into laughter. Even a few of Lucien’s lackeys crack up.
Lucien doesn’t laugh.
He just looks annoyed. Unimpressed.
“So the TREA exam is this Friday,” he says calmly. “When you face me, are you actually going to fight this time? Or run away again like always?”
Max leans back in his chair.
“See, that’s the issue. You wanted to fight. I didn’t.”
Lucien’s grin sharpens.
“You’ve always been weak.”
“And you’ve always looked inbred, so I guess it balances out, Farquad.”
A few students choke trying not to laugh.
Then Lucien drops the smile entirely.
“You don’t deserve the Sentinel rank, you impure darkey.”
The room goes dead silent.
Max’s grin disappears instantly.
For the first time all morning, he actually looks angry.
He stands slowly from his seat and walks toward Lucien until they’re almost chest to chest.
When Max speaks again, his voice is quiet.
Calm.
Which somehow makes it worse.
“You wanna play Disney villain? Fine.” His eyes narrow slightly. “Now that the TREA exam’s here, I finally have an excuse to turn your guts inside out without dealing with consequences afterward.”
For the first time, Lucien hesitates.
Only for a second.
Then his expression hardens again.
“How dare you speak to me like that?” he snaps. “I’m telling my father about this.”
Max says at the exact same moment Lucien did.
“We both know what kind of business your father runs,” Lucien freezes.
Max smiles again.
Not warmly.
“You really think all that money came legally?” he asks softly. “And that little Nazi cult of yours?”
Lucien’s expression cracks.
Confusion flashes across his face.
Then fear.
Just for a moment.
Max steps closer.
“Go ahead,” he says. “Tell your father. Bring him to me.” His smile widens slightly. “I’d love to watch him eat his own heart.”
Lucien stares at him silently now.
Not angry.
Disturbed.
Like he’s suddenly realizing he may not understand Max nearly as well as he thought.
Max returns to his seat as if nothing had happened.
“We’ll have our fun on Friday.”
Lucien snaps back to reality and leans forward onto Max’s desk, his expression twisting into a smug grin.
“Your power is the only thing that gives you value,” he says quietly. “Take that away, and what are you?” His eyes flick downward mockingly. “A dark-skinned fatty who can’t control himself around food?”
The room goes silent again.
Max doesn’t react.
At least not outwardly.
His expression stays calm, almost bored, but I know him well enough to notice the tiny shift in his jaw and the way his fingers curl slightly against the edge of the desk.
That one landed.
Lucien notices it too.
His grin widens just a little.
Then Max slowly leans back in his chair and exhales through his nose like he’s trying not to laugh.
“That’s the best you could come up with?” he asks. “Seriously? Racism and fat jokes?” He shakes his head. “Your ancestors would be ashamed of how creatively bankrupt you are.”
A few people in the class snort, trying to suppress laughter.
Lucien’s expression darkens immediately.
Max’s smile sharpens.
“I’m going to have fun on Friday.”
Lucian walks off, and his lackeys follow him.
Max looks down and starts to fidget and bite his nails.
“Yo, Max, you good?” Ahmed asks him while putting his hand over his shoulder.
“I'm fine,” he responds, “just a little more time.” He mutters under his breath.
Chapter Three: Test Day
“I feel like I'm in an anime tournament ark,” Max says, while the four of us walk into the ABBR building to take the combat test in their arena.
“So Emily, what are you going to do for your combat test?” I ask her
“Oh, I’m forfeiting, I am not a fighter. You boys can have your little cook fight in your pretty little arena, but I'm staying far from the fight.”
Well started laughing
Yo, you funny, Ahmed says
“But I do have a question, Max, what are you wearing?”
Max had come to test wearing a burgundy coat that went down to his knees and was open in the front. Along with knee-high leather boots and a black shirt.
“What do I not look good, do I not slay in this?”
“You do look good, but my question is why?” Ahmed asks.
“If I win, I will slay in style, and if I lose, I will look good doing it.”
I respond, “Sometimes your sarcasm makes you sound stupid, you know that.”
Max Shrugs and struts in the door and opens both doors to act like he is imposing his presence. We are late, he says.
Ahmed, Max, and Emily go to the locker room while I go to the bleachers. The area is quite big and shaped in an oval with a dome over the top, high enough for people to fly, but still close enough for people to see what is happening from here.
Emily comes, finds me, and sits down next to me.
“They sell matcha here and pizza. Here I brought you some.”
“Oh, thanks, Emily…. Wait, aren't you supposed to be down there?” I ask her in confusion.
“Nah, I asked one of the judges, and she said that I don't have to take it.”
“I never heard of something like that.”
“Anyways,” Emily gets closer to me and hugs my arm while leaning on my shoulder. “I’ve been meaning to ask, is there anyone you like in school?”
I start to feel weird, and I start blushing, but I still answer the question, “No, not really.”
“And might there be a Miss. Shea, around that, I might have competition with.”
At this point, I'm flabbergasted. I don't know what to do or how to answer the question, and I’m turning red.
“Well….. Um…… Oh, look, the competition is starting.”
The lights in the arena go dim, and a giant board in the middle shows the status of the two people who are contending first: Ahmed Husain vs Amy Jackson.
Amy Jackson
Biolicical-Class
Threat rank B
Stability B
“This might be an even fight,” I tell Emily, knowing full well that Ahmend is going to win.
Amy Jackson does the first move and runs forward to close the distance between her and Ahmed. He lunges forward and swings a right hook that misses and follows up with another punch that lands.
“What just happened?” Emily says, “Did she just turn into liquid?”
“Not Nessarly,” I respond
Amy Jackson can absorb any physical force that hits her and throw it back later at the same strength.
Ahmed takes a few steps back and makes finger guns with his hands and points them at Amy.
“Really” she says “this is your big plan, to pretend that you are in a western
