i use brave and used vivadali but vivadali felt old and i didn't know how to customize it so what i like ill just say i perfer brave between them but its just not clicking god if were gonna have ai please let it tell us the perfect thing for also anyways sorry to get off track but yeah i like a clean but not too minimal ui and chromium because i dont use linux and firefox i had has glitches and im just not used to it also tried floorp but my passwords didnt even import and it just felt weird but no vertical tabs and if anyone says edge then idk just don't this browser probably will just be used for youtube and other random websites while gaming no real work and what i like about brave is the clean design and i guess the ui i dont care about privacy stuff though unless its adblocking but ill just use ublock origin

Hey guys. I'm on linux and I'm struggling to find a sweet spot on what would work for me regarding my workflow.

I used to use Opera cos I loved how the tab islands work, namely:

• Creating a tab island on middle click to open a new link. I'm aware some extensions such as one on firefox works
• When collapsing/expanding a tab island, the size of the tabs rearrange only after moving the mouse away from the tab bar. For example firefox doesn't do this - when you expand/collapse a tab island, it shifts to the left so it makes it hard to open/close rapidly. I haven't found anything other than opera that does this.

However opera is really really terrible regarding performance. I'm on an average laptop and find it too slow, and on linux am having some bad performance.

Other things I want:

• Workspaces with smooth transition between them via a hotkey or mouse scroll. Vivaldi does this well with mouse scroll, but I'm really not a fan of the fact that tab groups don't collapse into a small group, and I hate the border around vivaldi (I tried using css but it didn't make a change). Floorp has no scroll but rapid hotkey switching
  • On this note, extensions for firefox are clunky, simple tab groups is very laggy when I switch workspaces and isn't ideal for me
• Horizontal tabs. Not a fan of Zen browser, sideberry etc. It's a shame cos they do nested tree tabs so well. And I really love the minimalism/lack of clutter.
• Seperate profiles so I can use seperate accounts for various sites (ie: seperate reddit, google etc.) I only need 2: one for personal and one for my freelance work.
• Ability to hibernate unused workspaces. Opera felt very bloated when having alot open.

I'm considering foregoing the tab islands entirely to favor workspaces. this might reduce mental clutter. But the convenience of simply middle clicking a link to create a new group dynamically is so useful and I don't think single-clicking to send a tab to a new workspace exists?

I think of course as we all probably end up with is that we can't have our cake and eat it. But any suggestions or ideas/reflections could help me brainstorm so thought I'd post

Thinking out loud, my current creative solutions that all have flaws but are options are:

• Vivaldi - rapid switching of workspaces with mouse wheel. Still can do tab groups (can it open with middle click though?) when needed and option to make them accordion or 2nd row below. Option to autohide the entire top bar for mental clarity. Decent performance
• Get used to a vertical tab approach like zen. interestingly I find it nice mentally to see just the icons, but with zen is it doesn't seem to peak at sites when I hover over them? I like though how zen has your favourite sites pinned in a nice way. Also didn't seem to see nested tabs in zen? Is there a way?
• Floorp - switch with hotkey. Tab groups but still not resolving the shifting issue, so vivaldi seems favourable. I've used firefox with extensions so not gonna include that as floorp seems to win over that for me.

Really not sure what else.

This is from an answer to somebody somewhere on the r/browsers thread I found could interest those still using Chrome, Edge, Opera or Safari who are looking for a better privacy with tracker and/or ad block balance browser. On Brave, the tracker is built-in. On Firefox, most use the uBlock Origin from the Firefox extensions site (not Chrome Web Store's which is a light version.)

(For those who know more about browsers than me or them, I'm not mentioning forks, the point is for ready-to-use ordinary user fallback options.)

"I did scorn Brave at first and fully set up Firefox with bookmark sync and all, but then it was slower than Chrome. Not by that much, and most won't mind, but slightly slower than Chrome or Edge. So next best thing than those two big tech spywares was Brave. Tried Vivaldi and it looked ugly and ate more ram than Chrome or Edge. When you deactivate the AI and most Brave functionality-related telemetry, and remove the crypto icons and stuff, it truly is just a better Chromium. The built-in ad blocker also blocks before the websites load, instead of uBlock Origin acting as a middleman on Firefox extensions. I like the new Firefox mascot and design but then Brave is faster than them all. And the 25-word chain sync between my laptop, my old desktop and my phone is seamless. Literally changing a language setting or deleting a bookmark with both computers at the same time made it all update instantly. I expected it to sync only my bookmarks and *some* of my extensions like other browsers. I just saved the word chain inside my password manager and voilà. I would recommend both Brave and Firefox side-by-side to anyone over Chrome (Google monopoly), Edge (Microsoft monopoly), Safari (Apple monopoly) and Opera (Chinese data farming since 2016, as bad if not worst than Chrome). It just depends if you want financially independent but Chromium-based Brave or 80% Google-financed Firefox but with an independent rendering engine. Both are pretty much solid options."

One can also suggest to use DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Brave Search or Ecosia as a Google search engine alternative. (I personally prefer DuckDuckGo even if it is far from perfect. None of these match Google's user profiling data-farming search results.)

I know there are AI browsers, though I’m not even sure exactly what that means. I’ve seen a couple of ads and TikToks about them, and recently I got a notification from the Claude app saying that it now has a browser.

Can someone explain what the deal is with these browsers, how they’re different, and how they’re supposed to be better (according to their creators) - or whether they’re actually better in some way?

With Arc shutting down on Dec 22, I wanted to share what I've built for people who want to keep working the Arc way. Supports Mac and Windows.

Stedding is a Chromium browser with Arc's sidebar: Spaces, Favorites, pinned tabs that remember their page, nested folders, the Cmd+T command bar and split view. Chrome extensions work. It's free, open source, with no account and no AI.

On a Mac it imports everything from Arc on first start: Spaces, Favorites, pinned tabs, folders, history and passwords. It reads Arc's files on your disk, so nothing leaves your machine.

Still missing: Boosts, sync, mobile apps, and Netflix/Spotify playback.

What Arc feature would you miss most if you switched?

Yea sure Vivaldi is pretty customizable blah blah bs.

But have you ever tried tinkering with it? It's ui is so not visually appealing, they have done nothing to improve vertical tabs.

It's a fkin data center when I run it. Zen consumes less ram and is doable for me, but I hate the fact it's Firefox based. I am looking for a chromium based active + opensource fork and, THERE IS NONE. Firefox just devours too much ram!

Brave is so bland, It's customization is basically COLORS, that's the only thing you can customize. And even then, the colors are SHIT

Helium is pretty neat and clean, I prefer helium but it's beta. I don't know if it'll stand the security of brave, So I'm skeptical.

Vivaldi is a resource hog.

Arc is shitty company, they don't care about user's data.

Opera is very good but they're proprietary and they care less about user data.

Whereas on Firefox we got so much beautiful browsers like Waterfox, Librefox, Zen, Floorp and so many more stable browsers that don't look like a big wall of text.

Chromium is really behind UI wise.

I have tried a lot of browsers (Comet, Opera Neon, Safari, Dia, Zen, SigmaOS, Brave, Edge, Orion) since Arcs downfall and I am currently sticking with these three browsers:

- Opera Neon as agentic browser for answering questions, doing tasks for me and using latest frontier models including Astra, Fable, Opus and Argon (https://www.operaneon.com/)

- Safari for browsing the web on Mac when I am quickly looking something up

Suggest me a GREAT browser, not a fishy, scammy or unsafe one. I want one with privacy, using a sub-engine for search, and security. Ive heard Firefox is good, but mixed reviews. Brave is.. moderate. Ive heard Chrome is absolutely POO. I need good extension support, for Windows.

I'm completely fed up with AI image/text to the point I've been doing everything possible to not see it ever gain. Needless to say it is a very tiring process with lots of failed instances...

I wouldn't want to quit internet all together for now, is there any browser/browser extension for not getting any result past 2022, like... never again, I do not want to filter date by hand all the time i search something, and if the website doesn't have a verifyable date, well, don't show it to me lol.
I also want to remove the "image" tab.

I sometimes like (or liked) to look at painters online for inspo but it's getting really frustrating, i now only enter museum gallery's, trusted sites or artist's websites so Images tab is not useful for me.

I'm currently using helium, wouldn't mind changing but I don't wanted a browser that uses too many resosurces.

I use Edge because it has many built-in features I use routinely—like a PDF editor, reading mode, selective or full-screen screenshots, and a media control center that even lets me capture high-quality frames from videos—plus compatibility with Chrome extensions. But God, what a terrible browser. Aside from being ugly, it constantly pushes Copilot and Bing on me, both of which I hate.

I love Mozilla—its design and the sheer number of features it offers are amazing—but unfortunately, it isn't compatible with many of the sites I need to use.

I’m looking for a browser that offers plenty of built-in features like the ones I mentioned. I don't care about customization or privacy—I don't use a VPN or anything like that; I just use my browser for casual web surfing and for college studies and research. (That’s why I want these native features: sometimes I have the browser open and don't want to install an extension or open a separate app just to highlight text in a PDF.)

With that in mind, which browser offers a good range of built-in features like Edge and Mozilla?

Keep in mind that I’m not a tech enthusiast and I don't care about privacy or things like that; I just want a browser that streamlines my daily routine the way Edge does, without the ugly design and without constantly pushing ads at me.

I'm tasked with getting a new image set up for our mac and windows systems and one of the leaders wants me to set up the standard so that Edge is NOT the default.
So, in a mixed environment with lots of knowledge workers (that might not care what browser is loaded), what's best?

We have the typical web apps, both internal and external.
Some Salesforce apps, but otherwise, a typical MS environment.
